The charge of the Catalog Management Discussion Group is as follows: to discuss the various issues involved with cataloging, classification, and authority control after the initial cataloging has been performed. In this respect, catalog management is defined as the continuous upgrading and updating of a catalog, regardless of its format, be it card, microform, book or on-line. The group will provide a forum for exchanging information and discussing techniques, new developments, and problems in managing the bibliographic integrity of library catalogs.

2010 ALA Annual Midwinter in Boston, MA, January 15-19, 2010


ALCTS CCS Cataloging and Classification Research (CCRP) Interest Group of the American Library Association (ALA) seeks proposals for its Research Forum at the 2010 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Boston, MA, January 15-19, 2010. The CCRP Interest Group welcomes submissions that address any aspects of the current issues, mechanisms for solving these issues and the significance of research findings in the broad area of information organization (e.g., cataloging and classification, metadata) especially in relation to digital environment. Proposals dealing with user-generated metadata such as social tagging are also welcome.

Both completed research and research in progress will be considered. All researchers, practitioners, students and other interested individuals engaged with cataloging and classification research are encouraged to submit proposals. Proposals are due on November 30, 2009. Each proposal must give the title, an abstract (up to 500 words) and the submitter's one-page vita. Also, please indicate whether the research is in-progress or completed. Proposals should include the following elements: a problem statement, a statement of significance, objectives, methods and conclusions (or tentative conclusions for works in progress).

From the submissions, the Committee of Cataloging and Classification Research and Publication Interest Group will select several proposals for presentation at the conference.

The ALCTS Catalog Form & Function IG will be meeting in its usual high-impact, high-conflict time slot at ALA Annual this year, this time at the Chicago Hilton, the main conference hotel. Our topic this summer will be *Accentuating the "e-"*, and we are currently looking for presenters for that session. Presentations should be approximately 15 minutes in length with 10 minutes for follow-up questions.

*Accentuating the "e-"*: Libraries are increasingly looking for ways to draw attention to their growing local and consortial investments in e-resources by flagging these titles in the catalog, adding URLs to print and e-versions, adding search filters or facets for "Online", "Internet", "e-book", and "e-journal" offerings, creating external lists, RSS feeds, and so on. We will look at some of these methods and see if they are really serving the need they were intended to serve.

A separate call will be made within CFFIG, seeking nominations for the office of Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect. At the conclusion of Annual, the role of Chair is to pass to Richard R. Guajardo of the University of Houston. Congratulations Richard!

In a world where funding is decreasing and demand is increasing, libraries and librarians are looking for ways to provide access to content without submitting their bottom line to costly and sometimes little-used online journal subscriptions.

The ALCTS CCS Electronic Resources Interest Group invites proposals for its panel discussion at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, on Saturday, July 11, 2009, from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

The discussion will center on the experiences of libraries and electronic resources librarians as they implement and manage transactional access models at their institutions. The panelists will
discuss why transactional access was right for their institution, the driving forces behind their decisions, the implementation process, technical implementation and management of the access, and the outcomes of their endeavors. The panelist presentations will be followed with a question and answer session, as well as an open forum for audience members to share their experience(s) with the session participants.

CFP: NRMIG ALA Annual 09 Program on Workflow Tools for Automating Metadata Creation and Maintenance

ALCTS NRMIG (Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group) invites your proposal to participate in a program on workflow tools for digital libraries, to take place at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, July 9-15, 2009.

With the increasing volume of digital content that libraries are creating and maintaining, long-term data curation is emerging as a key consideration for the profession. In order to support data preservation and re-use on a local level, as well as facilitate resource sharing, library professionals need practical tools to help them efficiently manage large volumes of data over time. What types of tools and techniques do you utilize to automate the creation and maintenance of metadata?

Presentations should focus on current practices and new technologies, and include concrete demonstrations and/or examples of automated workflow tools and techniques employed at a local level or in collaborative endeavors. Specific implementations may cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
-Digital preservation of assets and collections
-Data production, or validation of metadata, to comply with a particular schema or protocol
-Data migration / interoperability across systems or applications
-Interoperability, data harvesting, e.g., for resource sharing
-Data production in distributed environments
-Open source or proprietary software tools
-Tips or techniques for working with particular standards and protocols

The program forum will be a panel, in which each participant has from 20-30 minutes to present, followed by a Q & A period at the end of the program. We are particularly interested in local policies for cataloging printouts from PDF files and other internet sources. As more and more publications are released online instead of in print, many public service librarians find themselves "printing the web." How are catalogers providing access to these materials?

The summer meeting of the Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group at ALA Annual will consist of a discussion followed by a business meeting. The topic of the discussion is “IT Support in Cataloging Departments.”

In March of this year, Erin Stalberg from NCSU posed some questions on the metadatalibrarians list about the existence of organizational models which combine both metadata competencies and MARC competencies. The questions elicited few answers and much interest. We would like to devote our meeting time to an open discussion of issues such as technical competencies, metadata competencies, workflows which accommodate both Marc and other metadata schemas, and ways in which these skillsets can be brought into our departments and have them support all of our workflows.

Please contact me if you are interested in helping lead this discussion. I would like to have 2 or 3 people who can draw out questions from the audience and then help facilitate a discussion around them. This is not a formal presentation, rather a forum for exploring the ways in which technological skills and cataloging skills may be combined in an organizational structure.

If you have related questions which you would like addressed during the discussion, please send them along by replying directly to me. I will summarize for the lists.

ALCTS CCS Cataloging Norms Discussion Group invites speakers for its meeting at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA, Saturday, June 28, 2008 from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Presentation topics should be of current interest to catalogers, cataloging managers and administrators.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to: evolution, definition, and functions of the catalog and cataloging norms; emerging concepts and implementations of "next generation catalogs"; RDA; FRBR; cataloging in hybrid and digital libraries; changes in basic cataloging work and
catalogers' responsibilities; changes in catalogers' workflows; emerging perceptions of cataloging quality; how end users' expectations and behaviors affect cataloging norms; metadata records and elements in different contexts; and the impact of web norms on cataloging norms from
the perspectives of web developers and catalogers.

Presentations should be approximately 15-20 minutes in length. Time will be allowed for questions and answers. Speakers are encouraged to lead discussions.

CFP: ALCTS CCS Heads of Cataloging Discussion Group (ALA Midwinter)

The ALCTS CCS Heads of Cataloging Discussion Group is tentatively scheduled to meet during the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia on Monday, January 14, 2008, from 8-10 a.m. Please consider submitting a proposal for presentation and discussion. We have included the charge for this Discussion Group below. In addition to discussing topics of current interest, we offer an opportunity to share vacancy announcements in the group.

Charge: To discuss policy, implementation, quality control of bibliographic and authority records, work flow, personnel including supervision, motivation and other issues of concern to the members of the group. The group will provide a forum for discussing techniques and exchanging information.

The ALA Midwinter ’08 proposed topic for Heads of Cataloging DG session is: “Interaction—How Cataloging Departments cooperate with other departments of the library?”

Possible presentations would include reports on what impact the cataloging departments may have on other departments in the library and their functions. We would like to have cataloging managers, ideally representing various types of libraries (academic, national, public, and special), to talk about their cataloging departments' interactions with those departments (e.g., ILL, circulation, systems, collection development, acquisitions).

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) seeks proposals for a poster session to be held during the 50th ALCTS Anniversary Conference, June 20 and 21, 2007, in Washington, D.C. The poster session will be held Wednesday, June 20.

The ALCTS Conference, "Interactive Futures: A National Conference on the Transformation of Library Collections & Technical Services," will engage attendees in a thought-provoking, open, and participatory exchange on the transformation of our work and our profession.

In keeping with the conference theme, poster session proposals should focus on a transformative change or an innovation in any area of library collections or technical services work for monographs, serials, or electronic resources, whether in collection development and management, cataloging, acquisitions, or preservation. Poster sessions may document a change that has been implemented, or may suggest an innovation or describe a trend likely to affect change in the philosophy or practice of our profession.

This poster session offers a unique opportunity for beginning career librarians and veteran librarians, for library support staff, and for students, to address the future in which all attendees will work in a most stimulating setting. More than 250 attendees are expected; featured conference speakers are library leaders and provocative thinkers like Susan Nutter, David Lankes, Stephen Abram and Richard Lanham.

The deadline for poster session submissions is Monday, April 2. The ALCTS conference committee will review all submissions for appropriateness of theme, for quality of content, and for quality of presentation. Applicants will be notified by May 1.
