The ALCTS CCS Heads of Cataloging Discussion Group is tentatively scheduled to meet during the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim on Monday, June 30, 2008, from 8:00 to 10:00 am. Please consider submitting a proposal for presentation and discussion. We invite cataloging managers in all types of libraries to submit proposals. In addition to discussing topics of current
interest, we offer an opportunity to share vacancy announcements in the group.
The charge for the discussion group is:
To discuss policy, implementation, quality control of bibliographic and authority records, work flow, personnel including supervision, motivation and other issues of concern to the members of the group. The group will provide a forum for discussing techniques and exchanging information.

“Perspectives on the state of cataloging education, hiring, and on-the job training as viewed by experienced cataloging librarians”

Basically, poster sessions are an opportunity to informally present graphics and text about work you have done or are doing.
Usually posters are 4' x 8' or smaller - and in this case, must be self-standing (this location will not be providing boards for display). If you supplement your poster with computer graphics or other technology, you will need to bring your own projection equipment, laptops, etc.
Members of the Joint ACRL CJCLS-CLS-DLS Program Committee will be evaluating submissions on an ongoing basis through March 30, 2008.
The program and poster session are co-sponsored by the College Libraries Section, Community & Junior College Libraries Section, and the Distance Learning Section of ACRL.

Successful programs are built based upon the work flow of information in the planning stages, the project team’s ability to collaborate, technical expertise and cohesiveness. Project completion centers on the reflection of both the practical and aesthetic structures to meet the needs of target audiences. Often, it is necessary to restructure based on technology and demands. This conference will provide innovative and unique sketches to build or renew your program.
The Illinois LOEX Committee invites graduate students in library and information science programs to submit proposals to host a poster session at the 36th Annual LOEX Conference. The 2008 conference theme, Librarian as Architect: Planning, Building & Renewing, explores the meaningful building of supportive information literacy learning environments and experiences in instruction.
Poster sessions visually convey research in the areas of instruction and information literacy. They take the form of an exhibit and should include brief narratives, data, and graphics that quickly summarize the student’s research. Computer displays, handouts, directions to websites and other materials can also be incorporated into the exhibit. Presenters will be expected to informally discuss their presentations with conference attendees by making brief remarks, sharing information, and answering questions about the topic. Proposals for poster sessions will be limited to graduate students currently enrolled in library and information science programs.

The 2008 North Carolina Serials Conference Program Planning Committee invites proposals and suggestions for presentations on any aspect of the serials industry or serials management. These topics are particularly sought:
-Managing staff from multiple generations
-E-Learning and ensuring remote access to serials/resources
-Organization/workflow changes
-Recruitment and training
-E-Books
-RDA
The Committee welcomes participation from all members of the serials profession including faculty and library staff in all types of libraries, as well as publishers, vendors, and systems developers. Students seeking a forum to share findings from serials-related research
are also encouraged to submit proposals. The Committee hopes to continue previous successes by assembling a program that both shares and inspires creativity, collaboration, and new ways of thinking.

Because the education and training of catalogers concerns all types and sizes of libraries and information organizations, this call is for papers for a special issue of the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science (JELIS), the official scholarly publication of the Association for
Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), http://www.alise.org/publications/jelis.html). Papers should focus on education and continuing education in an age of Google, electronic resources, digital libraries, shifting standards, and metadata developments.
This issue of JELIS will supplement and extend the presentations at “What They Don’t Teach in Library School: Competencies, Education and Employer Expectations for a Career in Cataloging," a preconference during the American Library Association Annual Conference. This preconference at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. on Friday, June 22, 2007 is sponsored by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, ALISE, and the Library of Congress. Nationally known librarians, bibliographic access services administrators, technical services managers, and educators have been invited to address the theme. The papers scheduled for presentation at the preconference are:
-Core competencies required for a cataloging career in public libraries (J. Randolph Call, Detroit Public Library)
-Managing a shortage of catalogers: a research library perspective (Beacher Wiggins, Library of Congress)

This preconference at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. on Friday, June 22, 2007 is sponsored by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, ALISE, and the Library of Congress. Nationally known librarians, bibliographic access services administrators, technical services managers, and educators have been invited to address the theme. The papers scheduled for presentation at the preconference are:
-Core competencies required for a cataloging career in public libraries (J. Randolph Call, Detroit Public Library)
-Managing a shortage of catalogers: a research library perspective (Beacher Wiggins, Library of Congress)
-Integration of “old” and “new” cataloging competencies in academic libraries: bridging the gap (Karen Calhoun, Cornell University)
-Methods and materials for recruitment to a career in cataloging (Janet Swan Hill, University of Colorado – Boulder)
-Employers’ expectations for cataloging recruits (Brian E.C. Schottlaender, University of California at San Diego)
-Training issues managers face: increasing awareness of employer and educator needs (Matthew Beacom, Yale University)
-Improving education across the U.S. for catalogers: placing emphasis on the library and information science curriculum (Sylvia D. Hall-Ellis, University of Denver)
Additional manuscripts for the JELIS issue should be double-spaced, with ample margins, and follow JELIS manuscript guidelines http://www.alise.org/publications/jelis_submission_guidelines.html). The deadline for submission is October 15, 2007. A committee of experts will referee all of the submitted papers. Contributors will be notified of the referees’ decision by December 1, 2007.
