We aim for a variety of programs: basic to advanced, every library type, how you use various Innovative modules, and how you use other programs in conjunction with Innovative software. The topics list is not meant to be exhaustive. Some topics have been duplicated (as appropriate) under separate categories for your convenience. If you have an idea of your own and don't see it listed, please submit a proposal anyway; you just may find that you have the experience and ideas to share!

You may also be interested in coordinating a panel discussion, but don't have all of the presenters lined up. It's perfectly fine to have some TBA's at this stage. The Program Committee can work with you to help identify potential co-presenters.

If you have presented or coordinated at past IUG programs, please consider resubmitting a proposal for this year. Many comments from recent IUG conferences attest to the fact that it is impossible to attend every program that our users would like to hear; having another chance to see popular programs is always appreciated.

There are also a large number of regional user group meetings taking place this fall that offer an excellent variety of programs. If you are presenting in one of these regional conferences, please consider repeating your program at the annual meeting, so many more colleagues can learn from your experiences.

The annual Chicago Colloquium on Digital Humanities and Computer Science (DHCS) was established to bring together researchers and scholars in the humanities and computer science to advance the digital humanities as a field of intellectual inquiry and to identify and explore new directions and perspectives for future research.

This year, DHCS will be held at the Illinois Institute of Technology, with the theme "Critical Computing", seeking to explore how best to develop productive research collaborations between computer scientists and humanists. The colloquium is sponsored by Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Chicago, and Northwestern University.

We invite proposals for presentations, posters, demos, and panel discussions on all topics that intersect current theory and practice in the humanities and computer science. Please see the colloquium website for more detailed information.

I need reporters for ALCTS preconferences and programs that will take place during the 2009 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago in July. Reports are typically about 500 words, will be published in the September issue of the ALCTS Newsletter Online (ANO), and include a

The ALCTS Catalog Form & Function IG will be meeting in its usual high-impact, high-conflict time slot at ALA Annual this year, this time at the Chicago Hilton, the main conference hotel. Our topic this summer will be *Accentuating the "e-"*, and we are currently looking for presenters for that session. Presentations should be approximately 15 minutes in length with 10 minutes for follow-up questions.

*Accentuating the "e-"*: Libraries are increasingly looking for ways to draw attention to their growing local and consortial investments in e-resources by flagging these titles in the catalog, adding URLs to print and e-versions, adding search filters or facets for "Online", "Internet", "e-book", and "e-journal" offerings, creating external lists, RSS feeds, and so on. We will look at some of these methods and see if they are really serving the need they were intended to serve.

A separate call will be made within CFFIG, seeking nominations for the office of Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect. At the conclusion of Annual, the role of Chair is to pass to Richard R. Guajardo of the University of Houston. Congratulations Richard!

The ALCTS CCS Catalog Management Interest Group invites proposals for presentations for our meeting at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. The group will be meeting on Saturday, July 11th, from 1:30-3:30.

Topics for presentations are open, but must fit within the group's mission statement, outlined below:

To discuss the various issues involved with cataloging, classification, and authority control after the initial cataloging has been performed. In this respect, catalog management is defined as the continuous upgrading and updating of a catalog, regardless of its format, be it card, microform, book or on-line. The group will provide a forum for exchanging information and discussing techniques, new developments, and problems in managing the bibliographic integrity of library catalogs.

The ACRL New Members Discussion Group invites the submission of proposals for presentation at its meeting at the 2009 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, IL on Saturday, July 11, 2009.

The ACRL New Members Discussion Group is for new (and aspiring) academic librarians. We meet twice a year–at both ALA conferences–to chat about whatever is on our minds. It’s an opportunity for networking and a friendly place to ask any questions you have about succeeding in ACRL. Presenters at this meeting have the opportunity to contribute to the professional development of other academic librarians, gain conference presentation experience, and
build their CV.

Our meeting topic for the conference is “The Publication Process: Getting Published in LIS Journals.” We are interested in presentations that share personal experiences with the publication process, that will help new and aspiring academic librarians gain a better understanding of the various steps that are involved in this process. We seek proposals for presentations that address this topic from a variety of angles, including (but not limited to):

-Planning a systematic research program
-The publication process: Generating topics, writing up and submitting the manuscript, working with an editor, responding to reviewers, etc.
-Targeting various journals for publication
-What to do if your manuscript is not accepted

The ACRL New Members Discussion Group meeting will take place on Saturday, July 11, 2009, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Presenters should plan to speak for 10 minutes and allow 5 minutes for questions/discussion. There will be three presentations. Following the presentations, we will open the floor for discussion on the topic, or we can answer your questions about getting involved in national activities and/or academic librarianship in general.

Proposals are due by June 8, 2009. Notification of acceptance will be made by June 15, 2009. Please include the following information in your proposal:

1. A cover sheet with your name, title, institutional affiliation, mailing address, phone number, and email address.
2. A second sheet that contains no identifying information and includes the title and a 200-300 word description of your presentation. The description should clearly identify the topic of your presentation, your personal experience with this topic, and how your presentation will contribute to new and aspiring librarians’ understanding of the publication process.
3. Keep in mind that there will be no use of technology for these presentations.
Feel free to bring handouts if you’d like to provide a list of further
reading, etc.

New for the 2009 ALA Annual Conference! The ACRL Research Program Committee (RPC) is sponsoring Research Writer’s Consultations at the 2009 ALA Annual Conference, held July 9-15 in Chicago. Aimed at the new or inexperienced writer, the Research Writer’s Consultations will bring together small groups of two to three writers matched with an experienced writer or editor, who will offer guidance and critique.

AUTHORS
Are you an ACRL member working on a research article? Would you like some constructive feedback? Submit a draft research paper for consultation. RPC will match new writers with experienced writers and the groups will meet face-to-face during the Chicago conference. Draft research papers must be submitted by June 1, 2009. Papers will be shared only among members of the designated groups. Submission details follow:

Include on first page: Author’s name and contact information in upper left and a paragraph describing what you would like others to comment on about your paper (e.g. grammar, writing style, clarity, presentation of the research methodology, etc).

Page limit: 25 double-spaced pages, standard 1” margins

Preferred format: Microsoft Word. Number pages. Footers should include author’s full name and e-mail.

Draft research papers should be in complete enough form for others to read easily.

Are you an experienced, published writer or editor? Interested in providing guidance to your colleagues who may be writing their first research article? Submit your name and a description of your areas of expertise by June 1, 2009. Reviewers are expected to review papers submitted for their small group in advance of the Chicago conference, as well as guide their small group consultation onsite during the conference.

In a world where funding is decreasing and demand is increasing, libraries and librarians are looking for ways to provide access to content without submitting their bottom line to costly and sometimes little-used online journal subscriptions.

The ALCTS CCS Electronic Resources Interest Group invites proposals for its panel discussion at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, on Saturday, July 11, 2009, from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

The discussion will center on the experiences of libraries and electronic resources librarians as they implement and manage transactional access models at their institutions. The panelists will
discuss why transactional access was right for their institution, the driving forces behind their decisions, the implementation process, technical implementation and management of the access, and the outcomes of their endeavors. The panelist presentations will be followed with a question and answer session, as well as an open forum for audience members to share their experience(s) with the session participants.

The Women's Studies Section will hold its second annual Research Poster Session during our General Membership Meeting at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago on Saturday, July 11, 2009, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. The forum seeks to provide an opportunity to present newly completed research or work in progress. Both beginning and established researchers are welcome to apply. Participants may receive collaborative feedback and recommendations for future publishing and/or new initiatives.

The potential scope of the topics includes, but is not limited to, teaching methods, instruction, information technology, collection development, interdisciplinarity, and collaboration with academic faculty. Attendees at the forum will find an arena for discussion and networking with their colleagues interested in related issues and trends in the profession.

The committee will use a blind review process.

2009 Library Research Round Table Forums at ALA Annual Conference, Chicago, IL
The Library Research Round Table (LRRT) will sponsor two Research Forums at the 2009 American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago, IL (July 9 - 15). The LRRT Forums are a set of programs at the ALA Annual Conference featuring presentations of LIS research, in progress or completed, followed by discussion. Two LRRT Research Forums are scheduled for 2009, one on general LIS research and one on a more specific topic that will emerge as we evaluate the submissions. The two forums are:

Research to Understand Users: Issues and Approaches
This session will feature three library-related research papers investigating users and their use of libraries and information. An LRRT committee will select the winning papers based on quality of study design, significance of the research topic, and potential for significant contribution to librarianship.

Four-Star Research
This session will feature three library-related research papers describing studies of libraries and librarianship. An LRRT committee will select the winning papers based on quality and creativity of study design, significance of the research topic, and potential for significant contribution to librarianship.

This is an opportunity to present and discuss your research project conducted in the broad area of library and information science or in a more specialized area of the field. LRRT welcomes papers emphasizing the problems, theories, methodologies, or significance of research findings for LIS. Topics can include, but are not limited to, user studies and user behavior, electronic services, service effectiveness, organizational structure and personnel, library value determination, and evaluation of library and information services. Both completed research and research in progress will be considered. All researchers, including practitioners from all types of libraries, library school faculty and students, and other interested individuals are encouraged to submit proposals. LRRT Members and nonmembers of LRRT are invited and welcomed to submit proposals.

The Committee will use a blind review process to select a maximum of six projects, three for each of the two forums. The selected researchers will be required to present their papers in person at the forums and to register for the conference. Criteria for selection are:

1. Significance of the study to library and information science research;
2. Quality and creativity of the methodology;
3. Potential to fill a research gap or to build on previous LIS studies;
4. Adherence to submission requirements (see below).

Please submit a two-page proposal by Friday, December 19, 2008. Late submissions will not be considered, and submissions must be limited to two pages in length. On the first page, please list your name(s), title(s), institutional affiliation(s), and contact information (telephone number, mailing address, and email address). The second page should NOT show your name or any other identifying information. Instead, it must include: 1) The title of your project, and 2) A 500-word abstract. The abstract must include a problem statement, problem significance, project objectives, methodology, and conclusions (or tentative conclusions for work in progress), and an indication of whether the research is in-progress or completed. Previously published research or research accepted for publication by December 19, 2008, will not be considered.

The Research and Statistics Committee of the Reference Services Section of RUSA invites the submission of research projects for presentation at the 15th Reference Research Forum at the 2009 American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago, IL.

The Reference Research Forum continues to be one of the most popular and valuable programs during the ALA Annual Conference, where attendees can learn about notable research projects conducted in the broad area of reference services such as user behavior, electronic services, reference effectiveness, and organizational structure and personnel. All researchers, including reference practitioners from all types of libraries, library school faculty and students, and other interested individuals, are encouraged to submit a proposal.

The Committee employs a "blind" review process to select two projects for 25 minute presentations, followed by open discussion. Winning submissions must be presented in person at the Forum in Chicago.

Criteria for selection:

* Quality and creativity of the research design and methodologies;
* Significance of the study for improving the quality of reference service;
* Potential for research to fill a gap in reference knowledge or to build on previous studies;
* Research projects may be in-progress or completed;
* Previously published research or research accepted for publication will not be accepted

Proposals Sought for Grassroots Programs at 2009 ALA Annual Conference
Do you have a great idea for an Annual Conference program but don’t belong to a committee or other group that can plan and produce a program? As part of ALA President Jim Rettig’s “Creating Connections” initiatives, you are invited to submit a proposal for a program to take place at the 2009 ALA Annual Conference July 9-15 in Chicago.

The purpose of a Grassroots Program is:

To expand opportunity for participation in ALA by giving members who do not belong to committees or boards within ALA an opportunity to plan and produce a program at the Annual Conference

To provide programs at the Annual Conference that address very current issues by compressing to the greatest degree possible the program planning schedule

To enrich the variety and quality of programs at the Annual Conference.

Proposals can be submitted by a single ALA personal member or by any group of ALA members who do not serve together on a committee or board within ALA. Proposals can address any topic of interest to ALA members. Proposals must be original; they cannot replicate a program previously presented at an ALA Annual Conference, Midwinter Meeting or national divisional conference. Proposals previously submitted to a committee, board or task force in ALA, one of its divisions or one of its round tables, cannot be resubmitted

Proposals will be judged on:

Relevance of the program’s topic to ALA members and the profession at large
Timelines
Knowledge of proposed speaker(s) on the topic
Originality – i.e., the degree to which the proposed program looks at a topic in a new and fresh way or treats a topic that has not received as much attention as it deserves, either because it is very new or due to some other factor
Proposals can address ALA’s key action areas:

Diversity
Equitable Access to Information and Library Services
Education and Lifelong Learning
Intellectual Freedom
Advocacy for Libraries and the Profession
Literacy
Organizational Excellence or other areas.
A jury will select up to 10 programs to take place during the conference. The jury will be made up of members of the student ALA chapters at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and UCLA as well as several members of Jim Rettig’s presidential initiatives advisory committee.

Each selected program will be listed in the program book for the 2009 ALA Annual Conference and will be noted as being part of the Grassroots Program Track as a juried program. You are also welcome to publicize your program by whatever means you would like, but please indicate that it is part of the “Grassroots Program Track.”

Each program will be allotted a $500 budget to cover speaker costs or other expenditures.

ALCTS NRMIG (Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group) invites your proposal to participate in a program on workflow tools for digital libraries, to take place at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, July 9-15, 2009.

With the increasing volume of digital content that libraries are creating and maintaining, long-term data curation is emerging as a key consideration for the profession. In order to support data preservation and re-use on a local level, as well as facilitate resource sharing, library professionals need practical tools to help them efficiently manage large volumes of data over time. What types of tools and techniques do you utilize to automate the creation and maintenance of metadata?

Presentations should focus on current practices and new technologies, and include concrete demonstrations and/or examples of automated workflow tools and techniques employed at a local level or in collaborative endeavors. Specific implementations may cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
-Digital preservation of assets and collections
-Data production, or validation of metadata, to comply with a particular schema or protocol
-Data migration / interoperability across systems or applications
-Interoperability, data harvesting, e.g., for resource sharing
-Data production in distributed environments
-Open source or proprietary software tools
-Tips or techniques for working with particular standards and protocols

The program forum will be a panel, in which each participant has from 20-30 minutes to present, followed by a Q & A period at the end of the program. The Research and Statistics Committee of the Reference Services Section of RUSA invites the submission of research projects for presentation at the 15th Reference Research Forum at the 2009 American Library Association Annual Conference in Chicago, IL.

The Reference Research Forum continues to be one of the most popular and valuable programs during the ALA Annual Conference, where attendees can learn about notable research projects conducted in the broad area of reference services such as user behavior, electronic services, reference effectiveness, and organizational structure and personnel. All researchers, including reference practitioners from all types of libraries, library school faculty and students, and other interested individuals, are encouraged to submit a proposal.

The Committee employs a "blind" review process to select two projects for 25 minute presentations, followed by open discussion. Winning submissions must be presented in person at the Forum in Chicago.

Criteria for selection:
• Quality and creativity of the research design and methodologies;
• Significance of the study for improving the quality of reference service;
• Potential for research to fill a gap in reference knowledge or to build on previous studies;
• Research projects may be in-progress or completed;
• Previously published research or research accepted for publication will not be accepted

The title of the program is Our Town, Common Ground: Academic Libraries’ Collaboration with Public Libraries.

This session is co-sponsored in name only by the Public Library Association (PLA) and the Community and Junior College Libraries Section (CJCLS).

We would like the program to provide real-world examples of academic and public libraries cooperating with one another. Experiences and reflections may be presented by individual librarians or co-presenters who represent academic and/or public libraries. Examples of cooperative endeavors include but are not limited to shared systems, buildings, or programming; cooperative digitization projects; services for distance learners; and consortial relationships. The collaborations may be short-term endeavors or permanent partnerships.

Four presentations of 15 minutes each will be selected through a blind review process. This will permit time for dialog between the presenters and questions from the audience within the 90 minutes allocated for our meeting. This presentation may be recorded as a web cast, and made available on the ALA website.

We're in full swing for planning the second annual ALA TechSource Gaming, Learning, and Libraries Symposium, which will take place on November 2-4, 2008, in Oak Brook, IL (a western suburb of Chicago).

There's some preliminary information on the site about registration, the location, and keynote speakers, but we've also just posted the official Call for Presenters. If your library is doing something innovative with gaming, if you're doing research around gaming and libraries, or if you have ideas to propose and share, please submit a proposal. We want to offer another great program chock full o'the best sessions, and that could include you!

The deadline for submitting your proposal is June 15, 2008, and we'll respond by July 1. Help us make GLLS2008 even better than last year's event!
