This journal, published now 8 times a year by Taylor & Francis, LLC, is respected as an international forum that emphasizes research and review articles, description of new programs and technologies relevant to cataloging and classification, and considered speculative articles on improved methods of bibliographic control for the future.

Articles are particularly welcome in areas dealing with research-based cataloging practice, including user behavior, user needs and benefits.

"Semantic Interoperability of Linked Data"
Conference Theme
DC-2009 will focus on linked data and the enabling of the Semantic Web. Conference
participants will explore the conceptual and practical issues in breaking the constraints of data
silos and connecting pieces of data, information, and knowledge. Metadata is a key to these
processes supporting publishing and interlinking structured data on the Semantic Web.
The basic assumption behind the concept of linked data is that the value and usefulness of data
increases the more it is interlinked with other data. There is a growing interest in the metadata
community in connecting existing and future data contained in silos within and across
organizations in a meaningful way that supports extraction and correlation of the data. The
linking of data from disparate data silos presents technical and social challenges that will be
explored at DC-2009 through full papers, project reports, posters, special sessions and
workshops.
Beyond the conference theme, papers, reports, and poster submissions are welcome on a wide

CFP: NRMIG ALA Annual 09 Program on Workflow Tools for Automating Metadata Creation and Maintenance

ALCTS NRMIG (Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group) invites your proposal to participate in a program on workflow tools for digital libraries, to take place at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, July 9-15, 2009.

With the increasing volume of digital content that libraries are creating and maintaining, long-term data curation is emerging as a key consideration for the profession. In order to support data preservation and re-use on a local level, as well as facilitate resource sharing, library professionals need practical tools to help them efficiently manage large volumes of data over time. What types of tools and techniques do you utilize to automate the creation and maintenance of metadata?

Presentations should focus on current practices and new technologies, and include concrete demonstrations and/or examples of automated workflow tools and techniques employed at a local level or in collaborative endeavors. Specific implementations may cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
-Digital preservation of assets and collections
-Data production, or validation of metadata, to comply with a particular schema or protocol
-Data migration / interoperability across systems or applications
-Interoperability, data harvesting, e.g., for resource sharing
-Data production in distributed environments
-Open source or proprietary software tools
-Tips or techniques for working with particular standards and protocols

The program forum will be a panel, in which each participant has from 20-30 minutes to present, followed by a Q & A period at the end of the program. The Journal of Library Metadata marks the growing importance of metadata in libraries. As libraries collect, produce, distribute, and publish more information than ever before, the metadata that describes these resources becomes more crucial for electronic resource management and discovery.

Institutional repositories are one of the main forces promoting the creation of many different metadata schemes, specialized controlled vocabularies, and new initiatives for data sharing and harvesting. An increasingly popular type of search called “faceted searching” is also reliant on enriched metadata.

The annual Dublin Core conferences bring together leading metadata researchers and professionals from around the world. DC-2008 in Berlin will be the eighth in a series of conferences held previously in Tokyo, Florence, Seattle, Shanghai, Madrid, Manzanillo, and Singapore.

The DC-2008 conference is organized jointly by the Competence Centre for Interoperable Metadata (KIM), Max Planck Digital Library, Göttingen State and University Library, the German National Library, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, and Dublin Core Metadata Initiative with sponsorship from Wikimedia Deutschland.

Conference Theme
Metadata is a key aspect of our evolving infrastructure for information management, social computing, and scientific collaboration.

DC-2008 will focus on metadata challenges, solutions, and innovation in initiatives and activities underlying semantic and social applications. Metadata is part of the fabric of social computing, which includes the use of wikis, blogs, and tagging for collaboration and participation. Metadata also underlies the development of semantic applications, and the Semantic Web — the representation and integration of multimedia knowledge structures on the basis of semantic models. These two trends flow together in applications such as Wikipedia, where authors collectively create structured information that can be extracted and used to enhance access to and use of information sources.

Recent discussion has focused on how existing bibliographic standards can be expressed as Semantic Web vocabularies to facilitate the ingration of library and cultural heritage data with other types of data. Harnessing the efforts of content providers and end-users to link, tag, edit, and describe their information in interoperable ways (”participatory metadata”) is a key step towards providing knowledge environments that are scalable, self-correcting, and evolvable.

DC-2008 will explore conceptual and practical issues in the development and deployment of semantic and social applications to meet the needs of specific communities of practice.

The Code4Lib Journal (C4LJ) will provide a forum to foster community and share information among those interested in the intersection of libraries, technology, and the future.

Submissions are currently being accepted for the first issue of this promising new journal. Please submit articles, abstracts, or proposals for articles to c4lj-articles@googlegroups.com (a private list read only by C4LJ editors) by Friday, August 31, 2007. Publication of the first issue is planned for late December 2007.

Possible topics for articles include, but are not limited to:
* Practical applications of library technology. Both actual and hypothetical applications invited.
* Technology projects (failed, successful, proposed, or in-progress), how they were done, and challenges faced
* Case studies
* Best practices
* Reviews
* Comparisons of third party software or libraries
* Analyses of library metadata for use with technology
* Project management and communication within the library environment
* Assessment and user studies

Above all, C4LJ encourages creativity and flexibility, and the editors welcome submissions across a broad variety of topics. Anything that supports the mission of C4LJ is welcome.

The goal of the journal is to promote professional communication by minimizing the barriers to publication. While articles in the journal should be of a high quality, they need not follow any formal structure or guidelines. Writers should aim for the middle ground between, on the
one hand, blog or mailing-list posts, and, on the other hand, articles in traditional journals. We want publishing in the journal to be easy and painless, helping the community to share timely, relevant information that is currently shared all too rarely.

Articles need not include comprehensive literature reviews and bibliographies, although pointing the reader to useful work that has gone before can certainly be helpful. Authors are encouraged to include code samples, algorithms, and pseudo-code where appropriate.

The Journal will be electronic only, and at least initially, edited rather than refereed.

This is a call for articles for a special issue of Library Hi Tech, whose focus will be on information organization futures. The editor of this special issue is looking for innovative and interesting ways that libraries are using the structured metadata in their OPACs, to provide new and exciting ways to interact and use library collections and services for their users. Opinion pieces on this topic are welcome, as well as uses of new technologies and user features such as 2D and 3D information visualization, social tagging/software, integration with other structured metadata sources, or search interfaces that combine both analog and electronic resources in unique ways, are of interest to the editor. The annual Dublin Core conferences bring together leading metadata researchers and professionals from around the world. The 2006 conference in Manzanillo, Mexico attracted 234 participants from 25 countries. DC-2007 in Singapore will be the seventh in a series of conferences previously held in Tokyo (2001), Florence (2002), Seattle (2003), Shanghai (2004), Madrid (2005), and Manzanillo, Mexico (2006).

Conference Theme:
The DC-2007 theme focuses on the theory and practice of developing application profiles. Application profiles provide the means to document the use of metadata terms within specific contexts and to combine terms from disparate namespaces. Application profiles may apply to communities of practice (e.g. cooperation projects) as well as to organizations in the public and private sectors. Emerging experience in the creation of application profiles reveals layers of complexity involved in combining terms from mixed abstract models. DC-2007 seeks to explore the conceptual and practical issues in the development and deployment of application profiles to meet the needs of specific communities of practice.

In addition to contributions focusing on the DC-2007 conference theme, papers and workshop proposals are welcome on a wide range of metadata topics, such as:

Paper Categories:
All paper submissions to the Conference Proceedings are peer reviewed by the International Program Committee. The Committee is soliciting paper contributions of the following two types:

Full Papers (8 to 10 pages). Full papers either describe innovative original work in detail or provide critical, well-referenced overviews of key developments or good practice in the areas outlined above. Full papers will be assessed using the following criteria:
Originality of the approach to implementation
Generalizability of the methods and results described
Quality of the contribution to the implementation community
Significance of the results presented
Clarity of presentation

Project Reports (3 to 5 pages). Project reports describe a specific model, application, or activity in a concise, prescribed format. Project reports will be assessed using the following criteria:
Conciseness and completeness of technical description
Usability of the technical description by other potential implementers
Clarity of presentation

Paper submissions in both categories must be in English and will be published in both the print and the official electronic versions of the conference proceedings. Accepted papers must be presented in Singapore by at least one of their authors.

Workshop Proposals:

Workshop Proposals (1 page). Workshop proposals define the topic of a workshop session at the conference, identify session organizers, and describe a process for inviting and reviewing contributions.
