CFP: Journal of Web Librarianship Issue on Library Intranets

The Journal of Web Librarianship is pleased to announce an upcoming special issue, "Library Intranets 2.0." Manuscript proposals are now being accepted!

Web 2.0 tools have dramatically increased opportunities for communication and collaboration in all areas of our online lives. Library literature abounds with accounts of how libraries are successfully using these tools to connect with users, but how are librarians and library staff leveraging 2.0 technologies to improve internal communication? This special peer-reviewed issue of the Journal of Web Librarianship focuses on use of 2.0 tools, technologies, and philosophies for creating organizational synergy via Web 2.0 intranets in all kinds of libraries.

Nina McHale, Assistant Professor and Web Librarian at the University of Colorado Denver, will be guest editing this special issue. She has experience in reference and systems, and prior to coming to Auraria Library, she held academic positions at Howard Community College (Columbia, Maryland) and Georgetown University. Her research interests include Web and Library 2.0, usability testing, user-centered design, and federated searching. She holds a joint MA/MSLS in English and library science from The Catholic University of America.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

-identifying/creating best practices for internal information sharing (formats, workflow, access control, etc.)
-2.0 tools for improving internal communication
-use of open source software, i.e., Drupal, MediaWiki, for library intranets
-use of proprietary products, i.e., Microsoft SharePoint
-migrating intranets, managing content
-failed intranets: lessons learned
-2.0 buy-in and staff training
-spanning physical distances: connecting consortium members, branches, etc.

Query letters and preliminary proposals are welcome if potential authors would like to discuss their ideas with the editors. CFP: The Communication Review

The Communication Review seeks a synthesis of concerns traditional to the fields of communication and media studies. The journal seeks works that contribute to new knowledge across conventional disciplinary boundaries: -Communication and Culture, probing the questions of producing meaning and interpretation by way of analyzing culture through the visual and dramatic arts, literature, sociology, anthropology, and in the interdisciplinary tradition of cultural studies.

-Communication as a Social Force, focusing on the historical development and contemporary transformation of media and communication,telecommunications, and information systems, emphasizing their political-economic, technological, and institutional dynamics.

-Communication and Mind, examining the individual socially constituted through language and other media in their cultural, social, and economic contexts.

The editors view these as different theoretical perspectives on the study of communication processes. They particularly encourage historical work, feminist work, and visual work, and invite submissions from those employing critical theoretical and empirical approaches to a range of topics under the general rubric of communication and media studies research.

The Communication Review also functions as a review of current work in the field. Towards this end, the editors are always open to proposals for special issues that interrogate and examine current controversies in the field. We also welcome non-traditionally constructed articles which critically examine and review current sub-fields of and controversies within communication and media studies; we offer an expedited review process for timely statements. In addition, we welcome book reviews and extended review essays.

Introduction
Through an interdisciplinary perspective, this book will explore interpersonal discourse realized in computer-mediated communication (CMC). Interpersonal discourse concerns communication with another person in a dyadic, public or small-group context. Human interaction in a dyadic, public or group context through networked computers constitutes computer-mediated communication. The development of communication technologies enables dynamic social interaction through the CMC channel. Accordingly, there has been rapid growth in multiple genres of social interaction and online learning through the CMC channel. There exists a need to explore the impact of interpersonal discourse in carrying effective online learning and information seeking. This book will address such an impact by applying conceptual fundamentals of interpersonal discourse and online language usage to CMC contexts.

Objective of the Book
The rapid growth of CMC genres demands new perspectives, frameworks and tools for research and practice. Also necessitated is an understanding of online social interaction and an analysis of online discourse. This book will aim to, through an interdisciplinary perspective, explore three fundamental components of CMC: language, interpersonal relations/communication and information technology. It will aim to provide relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area. It also aims to address the impact of interpersonal discourse in the building of online communities and in the design of interaction systems and social technology.

Target Audience
The target audience of this book will be composed of professionals and researchers working in the field of information and communication in various disciplines, e.g. library, information and communication sciences, linguistics, computer science, information technology, education, and management. Moreover, this book will provide advanced undergraduates and graduate students in the above mentioned fields with an understanding of the online social interaction and applications of interpersonal discourse for effective online interaction across CMC channels.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
Interpersonal relations in CMC—a conceptual framework
Social and affective aspects of communication in the CMC
Communication norms for social interaction through CMC (e.g., netiquette)
Online language usage and discourse structure
Face, self, identity in online communication
Verbal and non-verbal signals for interpersonal communication in CMC
Meaning seeking and negotiation in CMC
Applications of interpersonal discourse to CMC contexts
Building online communities and interpersonal communication skills
Group interaction and virtual teams
Interpersonal relations in online learning and education
Digital information service and interpersonal relations
Interaction system design, social technology, social interface
Online interaction across languages and cultures

Submission Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before October 30, 2008, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the objective and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by November 30, 2008 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters (7000+ words) are expected to be submitted by February 15, 2009. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the “Information Science Reference” (formerly Idea Group Reference) and “Medical Information Science Reference” imprints. We invite you to submit a paper/abstract to the The 2nd International Conference on Knowledge Generation, Communication and Management: KGCM 2008 (http://www.sciiis.org/KGCM2008); which will be held jointly with The 3rd International Symposium on Knowledge Communication and Peer Reviewing: KCPR 2008, and The 3rd International Symposium on Knowledge Communication and Conferences: KCC 2008. It will take place in Orlando, Florida, USA, on June 29th to July 2nd, 2008.

The deadlines are the following:

Submissions: February 7th, 2008
Acceptance: March 3rd, 2008
Camera-ready: March 26th, 2008

Submitted papers or extended abstracts will have three kinds of reviews: double-blind (by at least three reviewers), non-blind, and participative peer-to-peer reviews.

Authors of accepted papers who registered in the conference can have access to the reviews made to their submission so they can accordingly improve the final version of their papers. Non-registered authors may not have access to the reviews of their respective submissions.

Awards will be granted to the best paper of those presented at each session. From these session's best papers, the best 10%-20% of the papers presented at the conference will be selected for their publication in Volume 6 of JSCI Journal (www.iiisci.org/Journal/SCI) and sent free to over 220 research libraries. Libraries of journal author's organizations will receive complimentary subscriptions of at least one volume (6 issues).

Also, we would like to invite you to organize an invited session related to a topic of your research interest. If you are interested in organizing an invited session, please, fill out the respective form provided in the conference web page. We will send you a password, so you can include and modify papers in your invited session.

CFP: ALCTS CCS Heads of Cataloging Discussion Group (ALA Midwinter)

The ALCTS CCS Heads of Cataloging Discussion Group is tentatively scheduled to meet during the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia on Monday, January 14, 2008, from 8-10 a.m. Please consider submitting a proposal for presentation and discussion. We have included the charge for this Discussion Group below. In addition to discussing topics of current interest, we offer an opportunity to share vacancy announcements in the group.

Charge: To discuss policy, implementation, quality control of bibliographic and authority records, work flow, personnel including supervision, motivation and other issues of concern to the members of the group. The group will provide a forum for discussing techniques and exchanging information.

The ALA Midwinter ’08 proposed topic for Heads of Cataloging DG session is: “Interaction—How Cataloging Departments cooperate with other departments of the library?”

Possible presentations would include reports on what impact the cataloging departments may have on other departments in the library and their functions. We would like to have cataloging managers, ideally representing various types of libraries (academic, national, public, and special), to talk about their cataloging departments' interactions with those departments (e.g., ILL, circulation, systems, collection development, acquisitions).

The theme for the 2007 Forum is 'Culture, Knowledge, Future’, with each day reflecting a part of the theme:

Day one will cover Knowledge, with sessions on ways of knowledge, including protocols, ethics, copyright, repatriation and developing knowledge places.

Day two will centre on Culture, which will include history, heritage, as well as visiting an Aboriginal community/group in south east Queensland.

Day three will be a day of sharing by inviting non-Indigenous people to attend the forum to discuss different perspectives.

Day four will focus on Future and will be an opportunity to workshop the future directions for the Forum.

Join us for presentations and discussions of the current issues that impact Indigenous librarianship and the opportunity to learn more about the cultures of Australian Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders, as well as Indigenous people from across the globe.

“We, as unified Indigenous peoples who work with libraries and information, will ensure the appropriate care, development and management of the Indigenous knowledge of generations past, present and future.”
