The ALCTS Continuing Resources Section College and Research Libraries Interest Group (CRS C&RL IG) requests presentation proposals for our Midwinter Meeting in Boston on Sunday, January 17, 2010 from 10:30am-12:00pm.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Pay per view pricing for journal articles
- Withdrawing print when libraries also have online access
- Regrouping after serials cancellations: have / how have your workflows changed?
- RDA and FRBR, as they pertain to serials
- MARC Format for Holdings Data
- KBART and knowledge base management
- Next generation OPACs and serial displays
- Other topics?
Each presentation should be approximately 20 minutes. There will be time for discussion.

Cataloging & Classification Quarterly will be publishing a special issue on 21st-century challenges for library administrators in the management and strategic planning of operations and personnel in cataloging and metadata departments. The guest editor is looking for articles that articulate new directions and opinions, as well as case studies, related to re-visioning, repurposing, establishing efficiencies, and/or redirecting both workflows and personnel within cataloging and metadata departments. Articles that examine how to justify and/or defend what are commonly known as “behind-the-scenes” or “back-end” library operations and personnel in the current budget crisis are especially timely. The guest editor is looking for a wide range of international participation, so proposals from authors outside of the United States are encouraged. Articles can be of any length, and figures and screen shots are encouraged.
If you are interested in contributing, please send the guest editor your name, a short proposal of the topic, and a tentative title for the article. Deadline for proposals is September 1, 2009. This journal, published now 8 times a year by Taylor & Francis, LLC, is respected as an international forum that emphasizes research and review articles, description of new programs and technologies relevant to cataloging and classification, and considered speculative articles on improved methods of bibliographic control for the future.
Articles are particularly welcome in areas dealing with research-based cataloging practice, including user behavior, user needs and benefits.
Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts via email with attached word document to the Editor, Sandra K. Roe, Bibliographic Services Librarian, Illinois State University email: skroe@ilstu.edu.

CFP: NRMIG ALA Annual 09 Program on Workflow Tools for Automating Metadata Creation and Maintenance
ALCTS NRMIG (Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group) invites your proposal to participate in a program on workflow tools for digital libraries, to take place at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, July 9-15, 2009.
With the increasing volume of digital content that libraries are creating and maintaining, long-term data curation is emerging as a key consideration for the profession. In order to support data preservation and re-use on a local level, as well as facilitate resource sharing, library professionals need practical tools to help them efficiently manage large volumes of data over time. What types of tools and techniques do you utilize to automate the creation and maintenance of metadata?
Presentations should focus on current practices and new technologies, and include concrete demonstrations and/or examples of automated workflow tools and techniques employed at a local level or in collaborative endeavors. Specific implementations may cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
-Digital preservation of assets and collections
-Data production, or validation of metadata, to comply with a particular schema or protocol
-Data migration / interoperability across systems or applications
-Interoperability, data harvesting, e.g., for resource sharing
-Data production in distributed environments
-Open source or proprietary software tools
-Tips or techniques for working with particular standards and protocols
The program forum will be a panel, in which each participant has from 20-30 minutes to present, followed by a Q & A period at the end of the program. The IFLA Cataloguing Section (IFLA CATS) invites cataloguers and others involved in the following to express their interest in making presentations at the section's programme during the World Library and Information Congress in Milan, Italy, 23-27 August 2009.
2009 will be a very interesting year in the area of cataloguing and bibliographic control. IFLA will publish a new statement of international cataloguing principles; a new cataloguing code, RDA: Resource Description and Access, replacing AACR2, will be published in 2009 and implemented by four participating countries (U.S., Canada, U.K., and Australia) and maybe more countries will follow soon after that; and in Italy, the host country of the World Library and Information Congress 2009, new cataloguing rules will be published.
The Standing Committee of the Cataloguing Section has therefore decided to dedicate the open session of 2009 to the subject of rule-making.
Presentations on the topic "New Principles, New Rules for New Catalogues" are requested. Two successful proposals on the topic will be identified.

Send a detailed abstract (1 page or at least 300 words) of the proposed paper (must not have been published elsewhere) and relevant biographical information of author(s)/presenter(s) by 15 December 2008 via email to:

The Journal of Library Metadata marks the growing importance of metadata in libraries. As libraries collect, produce, distribute, and publish more information than ever before, the metadata that describes these resources becomes more crucial for electronic resource management and discovery.
Institutional repositories are one of the main forces promoting the creation of many different metadata schemes, specialized controlled vocabularies, and new initiatives for data sharing and harvesting. An increasingly popular type of search called “faceted searching” is also reliant on enriched metadata.
The journal features both a peer-review section for research articles, and a non-peer review section for more practical, case study and best practice type articles. Included amongst the charter issue:

The charge of the Catalog Management Discussion Group is as follows: to discuss the various issues involved with cataloging, classification, and authority control after the initial cataloging has been performed. In this respect, catalog management is defined as the continuous upgrading and updating of a catalog, regardless of its format, be it card, microform, book or on-line. The group will provide a forum for exchanging information and discussing techniques, new developments, and problems in managing the bibliographic integrity of library catalogs.

The summer meeting of the Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group at ALA Annual will consist of a discussion followed by a business meeting. The topic of the discussion is “IT Support in Cataloging Departments.”
In March of this year, Erin Stalberg from NCSU posed some questions on the metadatalibrarians list about the existence of organizational models which combine both metadata competencies and MARC competencies. The questions elicited few answers and much interest. We would like to devote our meeting time to an open discussion of issues such as technical competencies, metadata competencies, workflows which accommodate both Marc and other metadata schemas, and ways in which these skillsets can be brought into our departments and have them support all of our workflows.
Please contact me if you are interested in helping lead this discussion. I would like to have 2 or 3 people who can draw out questions from the audience and then help facilitate a discussion around them. This is not a formal presentation, rather a forum for exploring the ways in which technological skills and cataloging skills may be combined in an organizational structure.
If you have related questions which you would like addressed during the discussion, please send them along by replying directly to me. I will summarize for the lists.

catalogers' responsibilities; changes in catalogers' workflows; emerging perceptions of cataloging quality; how end users' expectations and behaviors affect cataloging norms; metadata records and elements in different contexts; and the impact of web norms on cataloging norms from
the perspectives of web developers and catalogers.
Presentations should be approximately 15-20 minutes in length. Time will be allowed for questions and answers. Speakers are encouraged to lead discussions.

The ALCTS CCS Heads of Cataloging Discussion Group is tentatively scheduled to meet during the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim on Monday, June 30, 2008, from 8:00 to 10:00 am. Please consider submitting a proposal for presentation and discussion. We invite cataloging managers in all types of libraries to submit proposals. In addition to discussing topics of current
interest, we offer an opportunity to share vacancy announcements in the group.
The charge for the discussion group is:
To discuss policy, implementation, quality control of bibliographic and authority records, work flow, personnel including supervision, motivation and other issues of concern to the members of the group. The group will provide a forum for discussing techniques and exchanging information.
The ALA Annual ’08 proposed topic for Heads of Cataloging DG session is:
“Perspectives on the state of cataloging education, hiring, and on-the job training as viewed by experienced cataloging librarians”
Possible presentation topics include but are not limited to: (1) Developing and implementing training plans for new cataloging librarians; (2) Minimum requirements for new hires (e.g., copy cataloging experience, cataloging internships, or cataloging experience while enrolled in a library science graduate program); (3) Cataloging managers’ perspectives on the state of cataloging education in graduate programs; and (4) Managers’ views on the ability to receive strong pools of candidates for entry-level cataloging positions.

Charge: To discuss policy, implementation, quality control of bibliographic and authority records, work flow, personnel including supervision, motivation and other issues of concern to the members of the group. The group will provide a forum for discussing techniques and exchanging information.
The ALA Midwinter ’08 proposed topic for Heads of Cataloging DG session is: “Interaction—How Cataloging Departments cooperate with other departments of the library?”
Possible presentations would include reports on what impact the cataloging departments may have on other departments in the library and their functions. We would like to have cataloging managers, ideally representing various types of libraries (academic, national, public, and special), to talk about their cataloging departments' interactions with those departments (e.g., ILL, circulation, systems, collection development, acquisitions).

Because the education and training of catalogers concerns all types and sizes of libraries and information organizations, this call is for papers for a special issue of the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science (JELIS), the official scholarly publication of the Association for
Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), http://www.alise.org/publications/jelis.html). Papers should focus on education and continuing education in an age of Google, electronic resources, digital libraries, shifting standards, and metadata developments.
This issue of JELIS will supplement and extend the presentations at “What They Don’t Teach in Library School: Competencies, Education and Employer Expectations for a Career in Cataloging," a preconference during the American Library Association Annual Conference. This preconference at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. on Friday, June 22, 2007 is sponsored by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, ALISE, and the Library of Congress. Nationally known librarians, bibliographic access services administrators, technical services managers, and educators have been invited to address the theme. The papers scheduled for presentation at the preconference are:
-Core competencies required for a cataloging career in public libraries (J. Randolph Call, Detroit Public Library)
-Managing a shortage of catalogers: a research library perspective (Beacher Wiggins, Library of Congress)
-Integration of “old” and “new” cataloging competencies in academic libraries: bridging the gap (Karen Calhoun, Cornell University)
-Methods and materials for recruitment to a career in cataloging (Janet Swan Hill, University of Colorado – Boulder)
-Employers’ expectations for cataloging recruits (Brian E.C. Schottlaender, University of California at San Diego)
-Training issues managers face: increasing awareness of employer and educator needs (Matthew Beacom, Yale University)
-Improving education across the U.S. for catalogers: placing emphasis on the library and information science curriculum (Sylvia D. Hall-Ellis, University of Denver)
Additional manuscripts for the JELIS issue should be double-spaced, with ample margins, and follow JELIS manuscript guidelines http://www.alise.org/publications/jelis_submission_guidelines.html). The deadline for submission is October 15, 2007. A committee of experts will referee all of the submitted papers. Contributors will be notified of the referees’ decision by December 1, 2007.
