CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

The Research and Statistics Committee of the Reference Services Section of RUSA invites the submission of research projects for presentation at the 16th Reference Research Forum at the 2010 American Library Association Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.

The Reference Research Forum continues to be one of the most popular and valuable programs during the ALA Annual Conference, where attendees can learn about notable research projects conducted in the broad area of reference services such as user behavior, electronic services, reference effectiveness and assessment, and organizational structure and personnel. All researchers, including reference practitioners from all types of libraries, library school faculty and students, and other interested individuals, are encouraged to submit a proposal.

The Committee employs a blind review process to select three projects for 20 minute presentations, followed by open discussion. Winning submissions must be presented in person at the Forum in Washington, D.C.

Criteria for selection:
• Quality and creativity of the research design and methodologies;
• Significance of the study for improving the quality of reference service;
• Potential for research to fill a gap in reference knowledge or to build on previous studies;
• Research projects may be in-progress or completed;
• Previously published research or research accepted for publication will not be accepted

Proposals are due by Monday, January 4, 2010. Notification of acceptance will be made by Monday, February 8, 2010. The submission must not exceed two pages. Please include:

1. A cover sheet including your name(s), title(s), institutional affiliation(s), mailing address(es), fax number(s) and email address(es).
2. The second page should NOT show your name, any personal information, or the name of your institution. Instead, it must include:
a. Title of the project;
b. Explicit statement of the research problem;
c. Description of the research design and methodologies used, and preliminary findings if any;
d. Brief discussion of the unique contribution, potential impact, and significance of the research

Call for chapters: Reference in the Modern World(s)

Reference has gotten more complicated in recent years, with the plethora of materials online and in paper, more ways to ask questions and deliver answers, a larger multicultural public, and interdisciplinary subjects. All this is complicated by declining budgets as usage increases.

This is a call for chapters for a new book that covers these issues and more, for public and academic libraries. New authors as well as experienced authors are welcome. Chapters can be co-written. The deadlines are short to get it to press while still timely; a letter of commitment is needed by June 1, with a brief abstract or outline of topics and a short CV. Please feel free to ask
questions!

Working title: Reference in the Modern World(s)

The Off-Campus Library Services Conference is extending a formal invitation to librarians, administrators, and educators to present their research and share their knowledge with their peers. Individuals who provide library resources and services to students and faculty participating in instruction either away from a main campus or in the online environment are invited to submit a proposal. Through formal proceedings and the publication of Conference papers in the Journal of Library Administration, this information is made available to all who have an interest in this field.

Guidelines for Presenters

Please use the guidelines below when preparing a proposal for presentation to the 14th Off-Campus Library Service Conference. If you have any additional questions or need assistance, please contact us.

SUBJECT TRACKS
The following subject tracks are appropriate for this conference. It is understood that a presentation may fall into more than one track.
-Research
-Surveys, assessment, statistics, theories, overviews
-Teaching and learning
-Methods, strategies, models, one-on-one, classroom
-Electronic information and delivery
-E-books, databases, online tutorials, streaming video, virtual reference
-Collaboration
-Librarian, faculty, consortia, or other
-Administration and support services
-Program development, ILL, document delivery, reference management systems, collection development, budgets, staffing

FORMATS
Presentations
Presentation sessions should be 55 minutes in total length, with 10 minutes included for questions. Presenters are encouraged to use technological aids to augment their presentations. Online access and a laptop will be available in all rooms; please see our audio-visual request form if you need additional support. Presenters are encouraged to supply handouts or other materials as appropriate. Session evaluation forms may be provided at the discretion and expense of the presenters. A written paper that will be included in the official conference proceedings is required of all presentations. Please refer to the manuscript guidelines for proper formatting and other details.

Workshops
Workshops will be scheduled for two-hour sessions and should offer hands-on learning for the attendees. An abstract for the workshop must be presented for inclusion in the proceedings but no written paper is required.

Panel Discussions
Panel discussions should include several speakers and run a total of 55 minutes, with 10 minutes included for questions. A written paper is not required for the proceedings.

Poster Sessions
Posters sessions provide an informal forum to report innovative projects, introduce new services and resources, or test research ideas of interest to the off-campus library community. Posters may include narratives, tables, graphs, and handouts. They may be in print or electronic format or a combination of the two. Presenters must provide their own laptop if needed. Internet access will be available. Presenters are required to set-up and host their display for one hour and 10 minutes and to provide an abstract for the program. No written paper is required.

SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL
To submit a proposal, complete the online proposal form available from the link below. The deadline for submission is September 15, 2009.

EVALUATION AND ACCEPTANCE
After September 15, 2009, the OCLS Conference Program Advisory Board members will be provided with blind copies of the proposal abstracts. Proposals will be evaluated based on their potential interest to conference attendees, contribution to the body of knowledge associated with the field of off-campus library services, and their clarity of organization and expression. Program balance and room space will also be a factor in proposal selection. All presenters will be notified regarding their status of their proposals by October 15, 2009.

Primary Research Group is seeking a project directors for two monographs on librarianship

The first concerns academic library reference services and some of the issues that will be covered include: virtual reference, commercial virtual reference systems, use of e-books, reference acquisisitons, reference software and web applications, use of reference wikis, marketing online reference services and other issues of interest to academic reference librarians.
The second is for a project on psychology librarianship.

Responsibilities: Devise a questionnaire, recruit 9-10 library participants, administer the questionnaire online or by phone. Follow up each online or email interview with a brief phone interview to flesh out and develop the points raised in the email or online interview. Write an introduction or summary of results. Edit report for content. About half of the participants should be major research universities.

We estimate about 3,000 words of original writing, time spent to recruit participants, plus about 20-25 hours or so on average contacting participants and drawing out explanations, clarifications and expansions of their submissions. Each submission should average about 1,500 words.

For this project you need:

• Contacts in the broader academic library community to recruit participants, half of which should be from major research universities

• Good writing skills since you will be responsible for writing an introduction and summary and also adding to the submissions submitted by participants;

• Journalistic interviewing skills – since some participants will need to be interviewed by phone and you will have to draw them out and add to their answers, sometimes considerably.

• Knowledge of the main issues for the topic covered since you will be partially responsible for questionnaire development.

Each requires email interviews followed up by phone calls to 9 academic libraries.

Is your New Year’s resolution to publish in a peer-reviewed journal? Are you currently using web technologies to deliver services and enhance the experiences of your users? Have you conducted a study or analyzed a trend concerning the use or application of web technologies in libraries? Consider submitting a manuscript to us!

Internet Reference Services Quarterly (IRSQ), a peer-reviewed journal published by Haworth/Taylor and Francis, welcomes the submission of manuscripts for its next issue. Don't let the word "reference" in the title fool you. IRSQ highlights the theory and practice behind emerging Internet services, sources and resources in all areas of librarianship. Research-based studies, case studies of successful services or programs, and authoritative articles highlighting best practices are welcome.

Topics of interest include: tags and folksonomies, social bookmarking, wikis, mash-ups, XML applications, digital copyright law, open source solutions, next generation catalogs, electronic resource management systems, Facebook and MySpace modules and interactions, personalization of library products or services, search engine technologies, information services for cell phones or iPods, podcasting and YouTube-ing, Internet gaming and virtual worlds, Internet security, plagiarism in an online world, virtual reference, web-based instruction and streaming video and audio.
