LITA Committee Chairs, IG Chairs, and other technically inclined library folk,

This year, the LITA Program Planning Committee, in an effort to modernize the workflow for planning programs for ALA Annual, has moved the process entirely online! The following is the form that you can fill out if you are interested in proposing a program via LITA for ALA Annual 2010, June 24-30th in Washington, DC:

The form will be available at the above link, on ALA Connect (http://connect.ala.org/node/76611), on LITABlog (http://litablog.org/ala-annual-2010-program-proposals/), and anywhere else we can embed it.

Once you submit your program proposal, the Program Planning Committee will be in touch with you by the middle of August, 2009. The soft deadline for submitting proposals to LITA for a program for Annual 2010 is July 31st, 2009.

You do have to have an ALA Connect login, but you do not have to be an ALA member...you can register as a non-ALA member and still ask questions of the PPC. If you are an ALA member, you can login to Connect using your ALA login information.

If you have any problems that the Connect group doesn't solve (or you have other issues), you can email me directly, Jason Griffey, at griffey@gmail.com or find me on Twitter at @griffey. But please try to use the forum first. :-)

What can you submit

I am well aware of the challenge inherent with planning technology programming a full year in advance of the conference. Feel free to be a general as you need to be in describing your program on first draft...we can always approach you and ask you for details as we move through the process. But you do not have to have every speaker booked, and every topic decided, to put forward a proposal. Have a topic area, a theme, an idea for where you think tech will be? Go with it.
Who Can Submit Proposals

There is one more difference in the process this year that everyone should be aware of. In the past, all programs were driven by Committee and Interest Group submissions, with each group effectively submitting one program. While the PPC is happy to get submissions from these groups, it is NOT NECESSARY to be backed by a group in order for LITA PPC to examine and forward your proposal for a program.

If you, as an individual member, have a great idea and want to be considered, please put in a proposal. If you and two friends want to throw your hats in the ring, please do. If you aren't a LITA or ALA member _at all_ and think you have the best idea for a program at ALA Annual in the history of technology, fill out the form!

Library Society of the World, Code4Lib, and other library groups: here's your chance! Please participate and share with us! Let LITA give you a stage for your ideas. If you have an idea worth putting in front of 300 people at the largest gathering of librarians in the world, we are interested in giving you that opportunity.

The 2008 National Forum Committee seeks proposals for high quality
concurrent sessions and poster sessions for the 11th annual LITA
National Forum to be held at the Hilton Netherland Plaza hotel in
Cincinnati, Ohio from October 16-19, 2008

Theme: Technology and Community: Building the Techno Community Library

The Forum Committee is interested in presentations that highlight
specific technology implementations; just over-the-horizon
technologies that aren't quite ready for implementation; or
information technology research. We are interested in all types of
libraries: public, government, school, academic, special, and
corporate. Proposals on any aspect of library and information technology are welcome.

Some possible ideas for proposals might include:

1. Social Computing: social tools, collaborative software, etc.
2. User created content: Book reviews, tagging, etc.
3. Mobile connectivity: iPhones, iPods, handhelds
4. Virtual worlds
5. Multiplayer Gaming in Education and Libraries
6. Open Source Software: creative uses of OSS, technology on a
budget.
7. Federated and Meta-Searching: design and management, integrated
access to resources, search engines
8. Digital Libraries/ Institutional Repositories: developments in
resource linking, preservation, maintenance, web services
9. Authentication and Authorization: Digital Rights Management
(DRM), authentication, privacy, services for remote patrons
10. Web design: information architecture, activity-centered design,
user-centered design, usability testing
11. Technology Management: project management, geek management,
budgeting, knowledge sharing applications
12. Internet Law: privacy, copyright, filtering
13. RFID in libraries

Presentations must have a technological focus and pertain to libraries
and/or be of interest to librarians. Concurrent sessions are
approximately 75 minutes in length. Forum 2008 will also accept a
limited number of poster session proposals. Presenters are required to
submit handouts one month in advance for the Forum notebook, and
handouts will be made available on the Web site after the event.

Your proposals are welcome and much appreciated! To submit a proposal,
send the following information via email (in ASCII, PDF, or RTF format):

On Saturday, June 28th 2008 at 4:00 PM, HoLT (Heads of Library Technology Interest Group of LITA) plans a presentation on “Transformational Change: The Evolving Role of Library IT
Departments.” The description of this program is as follows:

“Technology continues to shape and transform library organizations. Library Systems and Technology departments and personnel are increasingly moving more from a traditional support role to active partners in developing new services as well as implementing organizational change. A panel of speakers will share different perspectives on how Library IT departments need to adapt and change to address new opportunities and roles within the library and their parent organization. A question and answer session encouraging audience
participation will follow each speaker presentation.”

Manuscripts sought for LITA/Ex Libris student writing award

CHICAGO - The Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to offer an award for the best unpublished manuscript submitted by a student or students enrolled in an ALA-accredited graduate program. Sponsored by LITA and Ex Libris, the award consists of $1,000, publication in LITA's refereed journal, Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL) and a certificate. The deadline for submission of the manuscript is Feb. 28.

The purpose of the award is to recognize superior student writing and enhance the professional development of students. The manuscript can be written on any aspect of libraries and information technology. Examples include digital libraries, metadata, authorization and authentication, electronic journals and electronic publishing, telecommunications, distributed systems and networks, computer security, intellectual property rights, technical standards, desktop applications, online catalogs and bibliographic systems, universal access to technology, library consortia and others.

At the time the unpublished manuscript is submitted, the applicant(s) must be enrolled in an ALA-accredited program in library and information studies at the masters or Ph.D. level.

To be eligible, applicants must follow the detailed guidelines and fill out the application form at www.lita.org. The Library and Information Technology association invites applications for the member volunteer position of Acquisitions Editor. The Acquisitions Editor is charged with developing topics for LITA Guides and Monographs, soliciting suggested publications from LITA members and others, interacting with authors to produce the publications in manuscript format, and coordinating the editorial review of manuscripts by members of the LITA Publications Committee.

Responsibilities:

-Must have a broad knowledge of current and emerging information and library technologies.

-Must be a member of LITA.

Benefits:

Are we advancing knowledge, sparking new scholarship, promoting learning and driving the pace of innovation now that hitherto inaccessible information for educational, research and general public use is now accessible?

Please come to listen to a panel of librarians who have partnered with the Google Book Library Project in a discussion on usage of digitized book collections.
