Call For Papers: Special Issue of Collection Management
Patron-Initiated Collection Development: Current Successes and Future Directions
To be published in v. 35, no. 3/4 of Collection Management in 2010. Seeking article proposals from colleagues at all kinds of libraries (all sizes of academic libraries, public libraries, and international libraries) about patron-initiated collection development, such as:
● interlibrary loan book purchase programs
● experiences with allowing patron use or selection to drive acquisition of electronic books
● consortial collection development plans with strong patron-driven acquisitions elements
● other innovative patron-initiated selection activities for materials in a variety of formats
● implications for the future roles of collection librarians in an environment of increased user-driven Acquisitions
● user discovery of patron-initiated collection development plans
The editors are particularly interested in proposals for articles that will that include evaluation/assessment/analysis.
Background
The special issue editors are members of the team that published the following article:
Anderson, Kristine J., Robert S. Freeman, Jean-Pierre V. M. Herubel, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk, Judith M. Nixon, and Suzanne M. Ward. 2002. “Buy, Don’t Borrow: Bibliographers’ Analysis of
Academic Library Collection Development through Interlibrary Loan Requests.” Collection
Management, 27(3/4): 1-11.
This article analyzed six subject areas for books purchased instead of borrowed as the result of interlibrary loan requests in 2000-2001. Now that ILL book purchases have been standard procedure at the Purdue University Libraries for ten years, the authors and their colleagues will
analyze this decade’s worth of information to explore the following topics in a series of four articles:
● Revisit the initial study by comparing earlier findings with more recent data
● Analyze the ILL book purchase program in relation to scientific/technical/medical (STM) titles ● Conduct in-depth statistical analysis across a decade of data, looking at issues such as patron status, subject areas as indicated by call number, subsequent circulation, comparison with similar subject area books acquired through traditional means, etc.
● Position paper on new roles for collection librarians. As user-initiated collection development frees time and effort from traditional collection duties and responsibilities, how will academic librarians develop and nurture emerging objectives and prerogatives, e.g. teaching, research?
The accepted articles from colleagues at other institutions will complement the four listed above.
Deadlines
November 13, 2009: Submit an abstract (maximum of one page) with the title and your proposed article idea. Your full contact information may appear on a separate page, but please include your name, institution, and email address on the abstract page.
December 4, 2009: The editors will notify authors whether their proposals have been accepted.
February 28, 2010: Submit completed article (10-25 double spaced pages).

The November 2009 Issue of “Against the Grain” will carry a special section of articles on the topic “Is Anything Still Out of Print?” The writers will explore the themes of Print on Demand (POD), Digitization on Demand (DOD), the out of print marketplace, free and priced ebooks on
the internet and in databases. Will we see a future where books never go out of print, or are we already there? We are looking for a few more articles, especially regarding digitized rare books and archives and another article on the topic of purchasing used books as a primary acquisitions tool. Articles should run 1500-1800 words with a mid September deadline

Against the Grain is a down-to-earth, practice-oriented library journal. Its goal is to provide acquisitions librarians in all types of libraries, and information sellers, with current information on events in the field, and practical insights into acquisitions techniques and processes. The "Biz of Acq" column features discussions of key acquisitions topics by working librarians.
Ideas for upcoming "Biz of Acq" articles include:
-Acquisition of electronic resources, eg., streaming videos, electronic scores, MP3's, e-books, etc.
-Acquisitions/Cataloging workflows eg. exporting at point of order, purchasing bibliographic records with materials, the impact of cataloging considerations on the decision to purchase databases, etc.
-The technology of acquisitions eg. library systems, databases, spreadsheets, the web, etc.
-Acquisitions in a bad economy with a declining budget, eg. reallocation of funds, serials cuts, policy changes regarding purchasing paperbacks, second copies, and content in a 2nd format, etc. -Finding and selecting vendors and vendor comparison and assessment.
-Workflow analysis.
-Managing accounting and accounts.
-Acquisitions workflows to take advantage of sales.
-Managing customer expectations and difficult selectors.
-Recruiting, training, and retaining Acquisitions Librarians and staff.
Feel free to choose any of these topics, or one of your own. Theoretical articles, research reports, "how-to" articles, case studies, literature reviews and conceptual or opinion pieces are welcome. Article length should be approximately 1200-1500 words (4-5 pages, double-spaced).
Contributions may be written by individuals or co-authored.

In a world where funding is decreasing and demand is increasing, libraries and librarians are looking for ways to provide access to content without submitting their bottom line to costly and sometimes little-used online journal subscriptions.
The ALCTS CCS Electronic Resources Interest Group invites proposals for its panel discussion at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, on Saturday, July 11, 2009, from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
The discussion will center on the experiences of libraries and electronic resources librarians as they implement and manage transactional access models at their institutions. The panelists will
discuss why transactional access was right for their institution, the driving forces behind their decisions, the implementation process, technical implementation and management of the access, and the outcomes of their endeavors. The panelist presentations will be followed with a question and answer session, as well as an open forum for audience members to share their experience(s) with the session participants.

Hello all, please consider joining us for the Timberline Acquisitions Institute if you aren’t up to submitting a proposal. It is a fun institute–a much smaller scale than Charleston.
If you are interested in presenting, the Acquisitions Institute at Timberline Lodge is seeking proposals for presentations as part of the Institute’s ninth year as the pre-eminent Western North America conference on acquisitions and collection development. This three-day conference focuses on the methods and madness of building and managing library collections and information content and provides a small, informal and stimulating gathering in a convivial and glorious Northwestern setting. Institute planners are open to presentations on all aspects of library acquisitions and collection management. For the 2009 Institute, we are keen to see submissions that address:

The first issue of the quarterly peer-review journal /Collection Management/ under the Editorship of ALCTS member Faye Chadwell is now off-press, and welcomes the submission of papers for review and possible publication. Ms. Chadwell is Head of Collection Development and Acquisition, Oregon State University. She has taken over the editorial reins from long-time editor, Ed Shreeves, Associate University Librarian and Director, Collections & Content Development at the University of Iowa Libraries.

In my role as editor of a new column in The Serials Librarian entitled "Acquisitions Issues in Serials Management," I would like extend an invitation to any who might be interested in

The IFLA Acquisition and Collection Development Section invites librarians and other interested parties to submit proposals for papers for the Section's two hour Open Programme during the Quebec Congress.
A broad range of initiatives are underway in the library and information community focusing on digitization of print collections, including materials both in and out of copyright. We invite papers that present contrasting views, from participating libraries or organizations, of these various digitization efforts. We are interested in learning about the opportunities that are presented and the challenges that have arisen in participating libraries and organizations.

Against the Grain is now accepting submissions of articles for the June 2007 issue. This issue will look at the topic of "Best Practices in Collection Development"
Possible Article Topics Could Include:
-cooperative collection development and/or library consortiums
-licensing electronic resources
-Working with foreign vendors
-Collection assessment
-Virtual Approval Plans
-Moving from print to electronic
-library/departmental liaison programs
-weeding a collection
The above are only suggestions. This topic is broad and articles on other
aspects of collections development are certainly welcome!
Against the Grain is a partially refereed publication, and articles are usually 2000 -- 2500 words in length. Article proposals and / or abstracts of articles should be submitted by Monday, April 9, 2007. The deadline for submission of the articles themselves is Monday, April
30, 2007.

About Online Information Review (OIR)
Online Information Review is a refereed journal devoted to research in the broad field of online information, including both transactional and transformational aspects, in the academic, corporate, scientific and commercial contexts. It addresses issues related to online resources,
systems and services, information quality, content and software evaluation, with a primary focus on online and digital information creation, storage, retrieval and applications. Coverage is intentionally international, with contributions from both developed and developing

About the special issue
Online Information Review invites the submission of articles that address aspects of the theme, “Online Information Security”. In recent times there has been considerable popular interest in such issues as identity theft, denial of service attacks, and worms that thrive on the anonymity of the Internet. Behind these more dramatic issues lies considerable research activity, and it is this work that OIR seeks to bring to the fore.
Accordingly, this issue of OIR seeks original research and critical thinking that provides a basis for understanding the dangers of and possible solutions to online information security across the spectrum of online activity. Although all perspectives are welcome, papers that offer strong theoretical foundations and empirical focus will be preferred.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
- Online shopping security
- Secure online banking transactions
- Personal security in the online environment
- Online trust
- Maintaining digital document integrity
- The world of hacking
- Controlling viruses and worms
- Online lures and scams
- Scam Websites for stealing personal information
