Central Michigan University’s Global Campus Library Services welcomes proposal submissions for the Sixteenth Distance Library Services Conference to be held in Denver, CO, April 23-25, 2014. The DLS Conference is an opportunity to present your research, knowledge and experience on issues related to providing library services to those who are teaching and learning at a distance.

As practices that are effective in distance learning become increasingly applicable to any library environment, the information and networking opportunities offered by the DLS Conference can benefit all librarians, educators and administrators who are interested in expanding their reach beyond the physical campus.

 WPWVC/ ACRL Spring 2013 Meeting - Call for Proposals

The WPWVC/ ACRL Program Committee is now accepting proposals for the Spring 2013 Meeting, to be held on Thursday, June 6th in Morgantown, WV.  

The theme of the meeting is "Teaching with Technology".  This is an opportunity for librarians to demonstrate how technology can assist with teaching, both in the classroom and when working with users one-on-one.

While the theme of the meeting specifically mentions teaching, we are interested in proposals for any library innovation, service or problem that was developed or improved through the use of technology. 

The Committee is accepting proposals for presentations, round table discussions and poster sessions.  Presentations should be 50 minutes long including time for questions.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

·  Technology in the classroom

·  Social media in libraries

·  Technology and assessment

·  Information literacy

·  Innovative ways of offering traditional services

·  Using technology to improve workflow

Call for panelists: Changing your ILS - California Academic and Research Library Association’s (CARL) webinar 

Have you recently switched your ILS? Do you want to tell people about your experiences, the good, the bad and the ugly? If so, you might make a perfect panelist for the California Academic and Research Library Association’s (CARL) webinar “So you’re thinking of upgrading your ILS”.

The goal of this one and a half hour webinar is to give librarians who are contemplating switching or upgrading their ILS more information on the process from fellow librarians’ perspectives. It will be conducted via CCC Confer (Collaborate) and will be recorded for those that can’t attend the webinar.

We are looking for three to four panelists. Ideally, we would like at least one panelist that upgraded from their current ILS to a newer version (i.e. from Innovative’s Millennium to Sierra), one person who upgraded and switched vendors (i.e. from Voyager to Worldshare) and one who has upgraded from a proprietary system to an open source system (i.e. SirsiDynix to Koha). All panelists will be given ten minutes to talk about the upgrade process from their perspective and the rest of the webinar will be a Q&A session. We would like to know what worked well for your library, what didn’t, how library staff and students have adapted to the new system, etc.

The webinar will be scheduled to take place in the beginning in of October. A vast amount of models and terminology has been developed globally by libraries and other organizations and associations to define the skills that must someone have in order to be information literate. In the era of information plethora and digital technology, the information literacy skills are becoming more and more necessary.

Universities worldwide and especially academic libraries have early realized the importance of information literacy and they started to provide tools and programs to their students. These tools and programs were aiming to help students to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate and use effectively the information needed. Besides, this is the definition of information literacy according to ALA.

Nowadays, information comes in many formats and forms and its validity and its quality is not always guaranteed. Students must develop new cognitive skills in order to use this information succinctly and efficiently. Additionally, the specialization in disciplines made prerequisite the information literacy to interfere with the curriculum.

In these lines of thoughts, many universities and institutions around the world are starting to endorse information literacy into the curriculum.

Library Communications Journal, the official online journal of the Association of Library Communications and Outreach Professionals (ALCOP), is seeking articles for its Spring 2013 issue scheduled for publication in May.

The articles in the journal take a practical approach to library communications and outreach and are written by members of the library communications profession. Topics include strategies for reaching out to underserved populations, fundraising ideas, program development and promotion, and crisis management. We also encourage discussion of best practices for event planning, staff relations, generating better media coverage, or the use of social media and technology to tell your story. Creative solutions to issues facing today’s practitioner are also welcome.

The deadline to submit an article is April 19, 2013. New for the Spring issue are book reviews on publications focusing on library marketing and public relations; for those, the deadline is April 26, 2013. We also invite you to send us information about upcoming conferences or programs of interest to practitioners.

What is the role of gender in determining the future of academic libraries? In what way does gender pave (or hinder) the way toward innovation, leadership, reflection, growth, and action? As an academic librarian, what are your concerns about gender (and gendered) discourse in the context of your daily work?

ACRL’s New Members Discussion Group is seeking panelists for our upcoming moderated conversation at ALA Annual 2013, which will discuss the intersection of gender and academic libraries.

Topics for discussion could include: how gender affects library leadership; the relationship between gender and technological skills; personal experiences of gender-related issues on the job; the importance of gender diversity in library innovation, etc. Be creative! The dynamics of the discussion will be driven by the unique experiences of the panelists.

The charge of the ACRL-ULS Current Topics Discussion Group is “to organize informal discussion meetings and presentations on well-defined issues and problems of current interest to university libraries and librarians.” Last year, for example, the Discussion Leaders presented “Instructor-Librarian Transaction: Developing a Proactive Model of Library Service Delivery.” Other areas of interest may include but are not limited to: user experience, assessment, demand-driven acquisitions, information literacy, spaces and services, trends and forecasting, etc.

If you are passionate about academic libraries and would like to share ideas and lead a discussion at the ALA Annual Conference, please consider submitting a proposal. Submissions should be sent to Christine Tobias, Group Convener, at tobiasc@mail.lib.msu.edu by Friday, April 19^th at 5pm EDT. Since the selection will use a blind review process, submissions should consist of a cover page with the presenter’s name, title, institution, and email address, and a second page containing the proposal only (title, topic, summary or proposed presentation/discussion). 500 words or less, please.

The Journal of Business & Finance Librarianship http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/WBFL, a Routledge peer-reviewed publication, invites articles for a special issue addressing the new methods we use for reaching our users for all varieties of services.

Article submissions should focus on subjects such as

  *   The use of social media and mobile technologies in a business context, including academic, public, special libraries, and other information organizations.
  *   New methods and technologies for service and instruction delivery.
  *   Successful strategies for increasing library and resource usage.
  *   Other innovative outreach programs.

Chapters will be in the 4000-4500 word range and address the following points:

1. Define the technology (in general, and in the context of the chapter)
2. Why does the technology matter in general, and to libraries in particular?
3. What are early adopters doing?
4. What does future trend look like?
5. Having embraced this technology, what would the library of 2017 look like?

Proposals should be submitted to Ken Varnum, the book’s editor, at toptech2017@umich.edu by Monday, April 15, 2013. Please include the following things in your proposal.

• Your name, title, phone, and email address
• A few sentences describing your experience with the technology being proposed
• A draft of points 1 and 2 in the outline above
• An outline of the remainder of the chapter
• A writing sample, preferably something published in an edited or peer-reviewed publication

Deadlines

• April 15, 2013:  Proposals due
• May 1, 2013: Notification of acceptance
• August 15, 2013: Chapter drafts due
• September 15, 2013: Editor’s comments provided to authors
• October 1, 2013: Revised drafts due to editor
• 2014: Publication

About the Editor

Ken Varnum is the Web Systems Manager at the University of Michigan Library, where he manages the library web site and development of new features and functionality.  He received a masters degree from the University of Michigan's School of Information and his Bachelor of Arts from Grinnell College. He has worked in a range of library settings -- large and small academic, corporate, and special. He led the University of Michigan's implementation of Summon using the Summon API in a Drupal site in 2010. An active member of the library technology world for 18 years, Ken's research and professional interests include Drupal, web-scale discovery, and user-generated content. He is the author of Drupal in Libraries (ALA TechSource, 2012) and a frequent presenter on library technology topics.
