Net Initiatives For Tough Times: Digital Publishing, Preservation & Practices

We live and work in challenging times. How can our digital practices solve our current dilemmas? Internet pioneer, Vint Cerf, who has been called one of the "Fathers of the Internet" and is currently VP & Chief Internet Evangelist at Google, believes that the Internet and WWW are still young, yet are "poised to become the greatest communications platform humanity has ever known." The Program Committee of the Midwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association invites proposals for contributed papers and posters for the 2009 Midwest Chapter/MLA Annual Meeting in Columbus, Ohio from October 3-6 at the Hyatt on Capitol Square. The conference theme of Seek, Discover, Explore lends itself to a variety of topics, and provides opportunities for presenters to show how they endeavor to seek out new and improved ways to provide cutting-edge library services, to discover innovative techniques for using technology and the Internet, or to explore how libraries connect people to information in creative ways. Papers and posters may highlight practical problem-solving approaches, report on research in librarianship, document collaborative efforts or outreach activities, or describe innovative programs, resources or services. Contributed paper and poster topics are as unlimited as your imagination, talents and creativity can devise.

Contributed papers will be presented on Sunday, October 4 from 2 pm until 4pm.

Posters will be on display on Monday, October 5 from 11am until 5pm.

Presenters should be available to discuss their posters from 11am to noon on October 5.

For contributed paper proposals, submit a 250 word abstract to describe your paper. Include your name, position title, address, phone number and email address. Call for Poster Session Proposals: NASIG 2009

The NASIG Program Planning Committee (PPC) invites poster session proposals for the 24th NASIG conference in Asheville, North Carolina, June 4-7, 2009. The theme of the conference is "Riding the Rapids through Mountains of Change."

Posters will be on display 9AM-5PM on Friday, June 5th. Presenters should be available to discuss their topics during the afternoon break on this day. Submission form is online.

Poster sessions provide an opportunity to share innovative ideas and new applications of technology. Sessions may present a report of a research study, an analysis of a practical problem-solving effort, or a description of an innovative program that may be of interest to the
serials community. In keeping with NASIG's tradition of non-commercialism, poster sessions focusing solely on a commercial product will not be accepted.

Deadline for submission: Applications must be received by 5 p.m. EST on Friday, March 27, 2009. Members of the PPC's Sub-committee on Poster Sessions will evaluate abstracts. Presenters will be notified in April 2009.

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MARCH 30, 2009!!

The Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative was started to advocate for a complete rethink of the way libraries conduct resource sharing in the context of the global internet revolution. In order to showcase resource sharing innovation, the Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative has created an award to encourage libraries and librarians all over the world to make changes in how they do resource sharing and improve service to users.

Up to three winning submissions will be awarded a cash prize of $1,000 each. Recipients will be announced at the Rethinking Resource Sharing Forum 2009 on May 13 and 14, 2009 in Dublin, OH. Funding for the 2009 Innovation Awards is provided by the Alliance of Library Service Networks www.librarynetworks.org, a group of U.S. independent regional networks that includes Amigos, BCR, FEDLINK, ILLINET, INCOLSA, MINITEX, MLC, MLNC, NELINET, Nylink, OHIONET, PALINET, SOLINET, and WiLS. The Nebraska Library Commission is also a member.

Evidence Based Library and Information Practice announces new Associate Editor

The journal Evidence Based Library and Information Practice (EBLIP) is pleased to announce that Scott Walter has joined the Editorial Team as an Associate Editor. Scott is the Associate University Librarian for Services and Associate Dean of Libraries at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He brings a wealth of experience to our team, having served on the boards of several LIS journals. He is actively involved in professional activities, notably with the Association of College & Research Libraries, and he has an extensive record of publishing his own research. Scott will be responsible for Classics and a new section called Using Evidence in Practice.

The new Using Evidence in Practice section of the journal features brief reports of LIS practitioners' use of evidence to assist with decision making. The section follows a structured format to report practical implementations of an evidence based approach to tackling workplace problems. Have you followed an evidence based approach in your daily work? Have you begun a new project and incorporated assessment to measure outcomes and success? Have you tried to incorporate evidence but not had any success? All of these scenarios lend themselves to a retelling that may benefit others. Please consider writing about your experience and submitting it to EBLIP.

The Journal of Library Innovation, one of the first journals devoted explicitly to innovation and creativity in libraries, is a peer reviewed, electronic journal published by the Western New York Library Resources Council. Its mission is to disseminate research and information on innovative practice in libraries of all types.

Call for Papers: Edited Collection on Libraries and Cultural Rights Publication

Seeking chapters for a new edited collection entitled Beyond Article 19: Libraries and Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights.

This book will address the subject of libraries and cultural rights, a topic that has received relatively little attention in the past, but which librarians and others concerned with human rights are beginning to recognize and discuss. Librarians have long been concerned with individual rights and have worked tirelessly to protect and preserve those rights, but little has been written about the role that libraries can play in protecting and promoting group rights, specifically cultural rights. This book will examine this shortfall by exploring the relationship between libraries, cultural rights, and community life and identity.

We are seeking chapters that take a theoretical, practical, and/or historical approach to the issue. Possible chapter themes include:

* Theoretical explorations of libraries and cultural, economic, and social rights
* Legislation that protects libraries as social and cultural institutions
* Legal and judicial aspects of libraries and cultural rights
* The role of libraries in creating and preserving cultural memory
* The history of libraries and cultural rights/community identity
* Libraries as vehicles for social, economic, and cultural expression
* Explorations of Article 27 – how and why do/should libraries participate in the cultural life of a community
* Cultural rights as social rights in the library – moving beyond static collections to dynamic spaces of interaction
* Libraries as cultural mediators – how is cultural life defined/negotiated in multicultural communities.
* Is there a difference between cultural life as represented in national archives versus common public libraries? Should there be?
* How can libraries represent community identity while operating in a globalized world?
* Libraries as reflective and/or prescriptive of cultural identity
* Can libraries as “neutral spaces” actually serve as centers of cultural and community identity?

This collection of essays will clarify these issues, underscore their importance and significance, and lay the groundwork for further inquiry.

The Collection Development & Management Interest Group (CDMIG) of the Canadian Library Association is still acceptiong proposals for papers that deal with the theme of “Collections in times of innovation and change” or other collections-related topics. Each presentation should feature one or two speakers and be about 30 minutes in length. Papers with broad applications or with applications to more than one library sector or community of users will be given preference. Panel proposals will also be considered. Proposals will be reviewed by a committee of three collections librarians.

The deadline for submission of proposals has been extended. It is now March 6, 2009

The UKSG journal "Serials" will be publishing a supplement alongside the November 2009 issue on the topic of e-books. Articles on all aspects of e-books - library acquisition; innovative publishing models; usage; business models etc. - will all be considered for publication. All submissions will be subject to peer-review and may be rejected if they are deemed
unsuitable or too close in subject matter to another accepted article.

Length of articles should be around 2,000 words and the deadline for the receipt of papers is Friday 31st July 2009.

The Code4Lib Journal is now accepting proposals for publication in its 7th issue. Don't miss out on this opportunity to share your ideas and experiences. To be included in the 7th issue, which is scheduled for publication in late June 2009, please submit articles, abstracts, or proposals to c4lj-articles@googlegroups.com by Friday, March 20, 2009. When submitting, please include the title or subject of the proposal in the subject line of the email message.

C4LJ encourages creativity and flexibility, and the editors welcome submissions across a broad variety of topics that support the mission of the journal. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

* Technology projects (failed, successful, proposed, or in-progress), including how they were done and challenges faced
* Case studies
* Best practices
* Reviews

C4LJ strives to promote professional communication by minimizing the barriers to publication. While articles should be of a high quality, they need not follow any formal structure. Writers should aim for the middle ground between blog posts and articles in traditional refereed

Are you an LIS student interested in activism and the struggle for social justice? Do you stay awake at night thinking about how your politics might inform your professional practice?

The MIRIAM BRAVERMAN MEMORIAL PRIZE, a presentation of the Progressive Librarians Guild (PLG), is awarded each year for the best paper about some aspect of the social responsibilities of librarians, libraries, or librarianship. Papers related to archivists, archives, and archival work are also eligible.

The winning paper will be published in the Summer 2009 issue of Progressive Librarian. The winner of the contest will also receive a $300 stipend to help offset the cost of travel to and from the 2009 American Library Association annual conference in Chicago, IL. The award will be presented at the annual PLG dinner.

Think you might be interested? Here’s the fine print.

1. Contestants must be library and/or information science students attending a graduate-level program in the United States or Canada.

2. Entries must be the original, unpublished work of the contestant, and must be written in English. Entries may not exceed 3,000 words, and must conform to MLA in-text citation style.

3. To facilitate the blind review process, each entry must include a cover sheet providing the contestant’s name, full contact information (address, phone number, e-mail address), name of the institution where the contestant is enrolled, and the title of the paper. No identifying information, other than the title, should appear on the paper itself.

4. Entries must be submitted electronically, in Microsoft Word or RTF format, to bravermansubmissions@gmail.com. Entries must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. CST on May 1, 2009.

5. The $300 stipend is available only to help defray the cost of ALA conference attendance; if the winner of the contest is unable to attend, the money will remain in the Braverman Prize endowment fund and may be donated to a progressive cause at the discretion of the selection committee.
