CFP: OCLC Systems & Services: International Digital Library Perspectives will be publishing a special issue on open source ILS/OPAC implementations. The editor is looking for articles that articulate the planning, development, testing, systems work, marketing, etc. related to the implementation of a replacement to or alternative to a vendor ILS/OPAC. Articles can be of any length, and figures and screen shots are encouraged. OSS:IDLP is a peer-reviewed journal.
If you are interested in contributing, please send the editor your name, a short proposal of the topic, and a tentative title for the article. Deadline for proposals is November 1, 2009. Articles would be due to the editor by April 1, 2010. Any questions can be directed to the editor. Thank you.

Just a reminder about our call for program and forum proposals for the Annual Innovative Users Group 2010 Conference to be held in Chicago, Illinois from Sunday, April 18th through Wednesday, April 21, 2010. The deadline to submit program proposals is Friday, November 13, 2009; only 17 days away!

We aim for a variety of programs: basic to advanced, every library type, how you use various Innovative modules, and how you use other programs in conjunction with Innovative software. The topics list is not meant to be exhaustive. Some topics have been duplicated (as appropriate) under separate categories for your convenience. If you have an idea of your own and don't see it listed, please submit a proposal anyway; you just may find that you have the experience and ideas to share!
You may also be interested in coordinating a panel discussion, but don't have all of the presenters lined up. It's perfectly fine to have some TBA's at this stage. The Program Committee can work with you to help identify potential co-presenters.
If you have presented or coordinated at past IUG programs, please consider resubmitting a proposal for this year. Many comments from recent IUG conferences attest to the fact that it is impossible to attend every program that our users would like to hear; having another chance to see popular programs is always appreciated.
There are also a large number of regional user group meetings taking place this fall that offer an excellent variety of programs. If you are presenting in one of these regional conferences, please consider repeating your program at the annual meeting, so many more colleagues can learn from your experiences.

Collaborative Information Seeking and Sharing: An Annual Research Symposium of the Special Interest Group on Information Needs, Seeking & Use (SIG USE) in celebration of SIG USE?s 10th Anniversary.
Saturday, November 7, 2008, 1:30pm-6pm. Hyatt Regency, Vancouver, BC. ASIS&T 2009's conference theme, ?Thriving on Diversity,? provides an important opportunity for our Annual Symposium in celebration of SIG USE?s 10th Anniversary. Building on our people-centered approach, the reflective moment to be offered by this year's Symposium will be used
to consider the particular challenges of Collaborative Information Seeking and Sharing. This symposium will offer guided reflection on essential questions around information behavior research and practice in social and collaborative information environments: Where is
collaborative information behavior research headed? How are we to communicate our insights to researchers and practitioners in related areas of study and design? How can and should our models, theories and findings inform the design and delivery of collaborative and innovative information products and services?
The symposium consists of two keynote speeches as well as intensive seminar discussions. Our speakers include:
* Dr. Diane H. Sonnenwald, Director, Center for Collaborative
Innovation, and Professor at the Swedish School of Information &
Library Science, University of Gothenburg & University of Bor?s,
Sweden. Diane will share insights gained from her research regarding
the challenges, opportunities and new ways of conducting
multidisciplinary research to facilitate information sharing and
knowledge transfer to better enable our models, theories and findings
to inform the design and implementation of collaboration technology.
* Dr. David McDonald, Associate Professor, the Information School,
University of Washington, and NSF Program Officer in the CISE/IIS
Human-Centered Computing program. Dave will discuss some of the
challenges inherent in conducting computer-supported cooperative work
(CSCW) and collaborative systems design, as well as the new trends
contemplated by NSF.
Submission: Attendees will be asked to submit a short Position Paper (not a formal paper). The Symposium will follow a seminar format focusing on rich and stimulating participant discussions. Researchers and professionals interested in participating should submit a 1-page position paper (about 300 words) reflecting upon critical questions for collaborative information behavior research to the Symposium Organizers not later than September 11, 2009. Please send your
position papers to Nadia Caidi and Soo Young Rieh (nadia.caidi@utoronto.ca; rieh@umich.edu). Applicants are invited to
reflect on the four questions that will frame the symposium and
present ways that their research addresses them:
* How does our research address the transformative relationship
between people and information?
* What are the fundamental questions that we should be looking at in
our research?
* How are we to move towards making a greater impact on organizations
and designers?
* How can or should collaborative information behavior research be
presented to translate effectively into the language of other
information research communities?
Experienced researchers may share information about their current
research and insights from lessons learned through past projects,
while those new to the field may describe their research or
professional interests related to the Symposium themes. Upon
acceptance, position papers will be posted on a wiki accessible
through the SIG USE website (www.siguse.org) prior to the Symposium.
Small discussion groups will be organized around symposium questions
and themes emerging from position papers. In keeping with the theme of
the Symposium, we will also maintain a Twitter stream for the
Symposium, thus encouraging people to exchange information and
contribute their musings before, during and after the Symposium.
Participants must register with ASIS&T at www.asis.org for the
Symposium. Symposium participants are invited to attend a SIG SI/USE
networking lunch during the time between the SIG SI and USE symposia.
Cost: Pay-on-your-own.
The SIG USE 10th Anniversary Reception will follow the Symposium at 6:30pm.

I have a contract to deliver a book on the changing role of Systems Librarians and Systems Offices in libraries to Chandos Publishing in the UK by April 1 2010. I am looking for contributors who can provide a chapter on the subject. Of special interest are

The Code4Lib Journal (C4LJ) exists to foster community and share information among those interested in the intersection of libraries, technology, and the future.
The Code4Lib Journal is now accepting proposals for publication in its 8th issue. Don't miss out on this opportunity to share your ideas and experiences. To be included in the 8th issue, which is scheduled for publication in mid November 2009, please submit articles, abstracts, or proposals to c4lj-articles@googlegroups.com by Friday, August 14, 2009. When submitting, please include the title or subject of the proposal in the subject line of the email message.
C4LJ encourages creativity and flexibility, and the editors welcome submissions across a broad variety of topics that support the mission of the journal. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
* Practical applications of library technology (both actual and hypothetical)
* Technology projects (failed, successful, proposed, or in-progress), including how they were done and challenges faced
* Case studies
* Best practices
* Reviews
* Comparisons of third party software or libraries
* Analyses of library metadata for use with technology
* Project management and communication within the library environment
* Assessment and user studies
C4LJ strives to promote professional communication by minimizing the barriers to publication. While articles should be of a high quality, they need not follow any formal structure. Writers should aim for the middle ground between blog posts and articles in traditional refereed
journals. Where appropriate, we encourage authors to submit code samples, algorithms, and pseudo-code. For more information, visit C4LJ's Article Guidelines or browse articles from the first 7 issues published on our website: http://journal.code4lib.org.

The Eastern Great Lakes Innovative Users Group invites you to present your ideas, experiences and views on the various modules of the Innovative Interfaces system at our annual fall meeting being held Friday, September 25, 2009 at the Akron-Summit County Public Library in Akron, OH.
* Presentations for all levels of experience across all modules and Innovative products are welcomed
* Proposals may take the form of programs, panel discussions, forums, demonstrations, and hands-on instruction
* Have an idea, but don't think you could devote a full 45 minutes to it? Submit a proposal for a 15-minute program
* New for 2009, hands-on instruction sessions (limit of 15 attendees per session) are welcomed
* Birds of a Feather” (BoF) sessions, which take the form of informal discussions on a particular topic, module or issue(s) may also be proposed

PSQ's Internet Resources Column is looking for reviewers to contribute to our next issue. The upcoming column will focus on Building the Library's Next Site.
What sites are you using to communicate with your patrons and/or your colleagues, in the library and at a distance? Have you used Drupal or an open source program to create an intranet or OPAC? Let's hear about it!
And, we are interested in learning about any other sites you find useful in your work, so please consider sharing your expertise with your colleagues.

LITA Committee Chairs, IG Chairs, and other technically inclined library folk,
This year, the LITA Program Planning Committee, in an effort to modernize the workflow for planning programs for ALA Annual, has moved the process entirely online! The following is the form that you can fill out if you are interested in proposing a program via LITA for ALA Annual 2010, June 24-30th in Washington, DC:

The form will be available at the above link, on ALA Connect (http://connect.ala.org/node/76611), on LITABlog (http://litablog.org/ala-annual-2010-program-proposals/), and anywhere else we can embed it.
Once you submit your program proposal, the Program Planning Committee will be in touch with you by the middle of August, 2009. The soft deadline for submitting proposals to LITA for a program for Annual 2010 is July 31st, 2009.

I am well aware of the challenge inherent with planning technology programming a full year in advance of the conference. Feel free to be a general as you need to be in describing your program on first draft...we can always approach you and ask you for details as we move through the process. But you do not have to have every speaker booked, and every topic decided, to put forward a proposal. Have a topic area, a theme, an idea for where you think tech will be? Go with it.
Who Can Submit Proposals
There is one more difference in the process this year that everyone should be aware of. In the past, all programs were driven by Committee and Interest Group submissions, with each group effectively submitting one program. While the PPC is happy to get submissions from these groups, it is NOT NECESSARY to be backed by a group in order for LITA PPC to examine and forward your proposal for a program.
If you, as an individual member, have a great idea and want to be considered, please put in a proposal. If you and two friends want to throw your hats in the ring, please do. If you aren't a LITA or ALA member _at all_ and think you have the best idea for a program at ALA Annual in the history of technology, fill out the form!
Library Society of the World, Code4Lib, and other library groups: here's your chance! Please participate and share with us! Let LITA give you a stage for your ideas. If you have an idea worth putting in front of 300 people at the largest gathering of librarians in the world, we are interested in giving you that opportunity.

This is your chance to share III expertise/issues with your colleagues, and, for those of you from out-of-town, a chance to enjoy both the beautiful Chemeketa Community College campus and Salem's historic sites.

CFP: OCLC Systems and Services: International Digital Library Perspectives
_OCLC Systems & Services: International Digital Library Perspectives_ will be publishing a special issue on open source development of digital tools and services. The editor is looking for articles that articulate the development processes (planning, scripting, testing, marketing,
dissemination, etc.) of various digital tools and services related to digital projects, grants, digitization, and collaborative and cooperative endeavors. Tools and services developed to reduce redundancies, create efficiencies in workflow, and allow for ingesting or exporting of data and/or manipulation of data for users are especially encouraged. Articles can be of any length, and figures and screen shots are encouraged. OSS: IDLP is a peer-reviewed journal.
If you are interested in contributing, please send the editor your name, a short proposal of the topic, and a tentative title for the article. Deadline for proposals is March 1, 2009. Articles would be due to the editor by August 1, 2009. Any questions can be directed to the editor.

_OCLC Systems & Services: International Digital Library Perspectives_ will be publishing a special issue on open source development of digital tools and services. The editor is looking for articles that articulate the development processes (planning, scripting, testing, marketing,
dissemination, etc.) of various digital tools and services related to digital projects, grants, digitization, and collaborative and cooperative endeavors. Tools and services developed to reduce redundancies, create efficiencies in workflow, and allow for ingesting or exporting of data and/or manipulation of data for users are especially encouraged. Articles can be of any length, and figures and screen shots are encouraged. OSS: IDLP is a peer-reviewed journal.
If you are interested in contributing, please send the editor your name, a short proposal of the topic, and a tentative title for the article. Deadline for proposals is March 1, 2009. Articles would be due to the editor by August 1, 2009. Any questions can be directed to the editor.

"Semantic Interoperability of Linked Data"
Conference Theme
DC-2009 will focus on linked data and the enabling of the Semantic Web. Conference
participants will explore the conceptual and practical issues in breaking the constraints of data
silos and connecting pieces of data, information, and knowledge. Metadata is a key to these
processes supporting publishing and interlinking structured data on the Semantic Web.
The basic assumption behind the concept of linked data is that the value and usefulness of data
increases the more it is interlinked with other data. There is a growing interest in the metadata
community in connecting existing and future data contained in silos within and across
organizations in a meaningful way that supports extraction and correlation of the data. The
linking of data from disparate data silos presents technical and social challenges that will be
explored at DC-2009 through full papers, project reports, posters, special sessions and
workshops.
Beyond the conference theme, papers, reports, and poster submissions are welcome on a wide
range of metadata topics, such as:
- Metadata principles, guidelines, and best practices
- Metadata quality, normalization, and mapping
- Conceptual models and frameworks (e.g., RDF, DCAM, OAIS)
- Application profiles
- Metadata interoperability across domains, languages, and time
- Cross-domain metadata uses (e.g., recordkeeping, preservation, institutional repositories)
- Domain metadata (e.g., for corporations, cultural memory institutions, education,
government, and scientific fields)
- Bibliographic standards (e.g., RDA, FRBR, subject headings) as Semantic Web
vocabularies
- Accessibility metadata
- Metadata for scientific data
- Metadata in e-Science and grid applications
- Social tagging

You have the experience and ideas to share!! If you have an idea of your own and don't see it listed, please submit a proposal anyway.

We are now accepting proposals for prepared talks for Code4lib 2009. Code4lib 2009 is a loosely structured conference for library technologists to commune, gather/create/share ideas and software, be inspired, and forge collaborations.
The conference will be held Monday, February 23 (pre-conference day) through Thursday, February 26, 2009 in Providence, Rhode Island. More information can be found at http://code4lib.org/conference/2009/.
Prepared talks are 20 minutes, and must focus on one or more of the following areas:
- "tools" (some cool new software, software library or integration platform)
- "specs" (how to get the most out of some protocols, or proposals for new ones)
- "challenges" (one or more big problems we should collectively address)
The community will vote on proposals using the criteria of:
- usefulness
- newness
- geekiness
- diversity of topics
We cannot accept every prepared talk proposal, but multiple lightning talk sessions will provide everyone who wishes to present with an opportunity to do so.

Remember, we aim for a variety of programs - basic to advanced, every library type, how you use various Innovative modules, and how you use other programs in conjunction with Innovative software. The topics list is not meant to be exhaustive. Some topics have been duplicated (as appropriate) under separate categories for your convenience. If you have
an idea of your own and don't see it listed, please submit a proposal anyway. You may also be interested in coordinating a panel discussion, but don't have all of the presenters lined up. It's perfectly fine to have some TBA's at this stage. The Program Committee can work with you
to help identify potential co-presenters.
If you have presented or coordinated at past IUG programs, please consider resubmitting a proposal for this year. Many comments from recent IUG conferences attest to the fact that it is impossible to attend every program that our users would like to hear, so it is always appreciated in having another chance to see popular programs. There are also a large number of regional user group meetings taking place this fall that offer an excellent variety of program offerings. If you are presenting in one of the regional conferences, please consider repeating your program at the annual meeting, so many more colleagues can learn from your experiences.

Call for Reviewers: The Tech Static
Call for Reviewers: The Tech Static
The Tech Static, a new technology book review outlet for librarians launching this November, is seeking regular reviewers for ebooks and prepublication ebooks. Please be comfortable with technology and with the prospect of reviewing guides to programming languages and other technology-related topics, as well as with reviewing materials in electronic format. Experience with collection development in this area a plus.

3) A short (~100-word) sample review of any technology-related title.
