The International Conference for Digital Libraries and the Semantic Web (ICSD
2009) addresses two main questions:
(1) How can digital libraries support Semantic Web functionality?
(2) How can Semantic Web technology improve digital libraries?
Ultimately the goal is an environment in which all functionality is available
to the user without the perception of different systems or system boundaries.
Contributions are sought that address one or both of the main questions or
steps towards the ultimate system.

The annual international conference and course Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA) addresses the changing and challenging environment for libraries and information systems and services in the digital world. Each year a different and ?hot? theme is addressed, divided in two parts; the first part covering research and development and the second part addressing advances in applications and practice. LIDA brings together researchers, educators, practitioners, and developers from all over the world in a forum for personal exchanges, discussions, and learning, made easier by being held in memorable locations.
This is the tenth and last LIDA that will be held in Dubrovnik; after that LIDA moves to University of Zadar (Croatia) on a biannual basis.

Part I: REFLECTIONS: Changes Brought by and in Digital Libraries in the Last Decade
Contributions are invited covering the following topics (types described
below):
synthesis of research, practices, and values related to digital libraries that were prominent in the past decade; conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches that emerged
reflections and evaluations of the impact digital libraries have had on various social enterprises
particularly as related to scholarship, education, and government
reflections and evaluation of the impact digital libraries have had on individuals in their everyday life; changes in use and users of digital libraries
assessment of changes that digital libraries brought to traditional libraries and vice versa, changes in digital libraries based on requirements of their host institutions
growth in involvement with digital libraries of a variety of institutions such as museums, professional and scientific societies, and other agencies
emergence and effects of mass book digitization efforts, such as Million Book Project, Google Books Library Project, and others; library participation in these projects

dimensions of e-heritage and areas of significance (documents, monuments - cultural and natural, as well as ancestry records broadly conceived to encompass bio-cultural heritage)
institutional perspectives on creation, dissemination, and access to heritage including local, national, trans-national and global strategies for digital heritage
perspectives on heritage information: cultural, political, educational, economic, legal, socio-technological, bio-technological
surveys of preservation activities, programs, projects, best practices
technologies for heritage information management: solutions and challenges
forms of heritage, their representations, and connection to artifacts, memories, and record-keeping practices
specific concerns for library and information science (including but not limited to digital curation, web archiving, automation of cultural heritage archives, etc.)
preservation efforts related to scholarly communication and the knowledge continuum.
Types of contributions
Invited are the following types of contributions:
Papers: research studies and reports on practices and advances that will be presented at the conference and included in published Proceedings
Posters: short graphic presentations on research, studies, advances, examples, practices, or preliminary work that will be presented in a special poster session. Proposals for posters should be submitted as a short, one or two- page paper.
Demonstrations: live examples of working projects, services, interfaces, commercial products, or developments-in-progress that will be presented during the conference in specialized facilities or presented in special demonstration sessions.
Workshops: two to four-hour sessions that will be tutorial and educational in nature. Workshops will be presented before and after the main part of the conference and will require separate fees, to be shared with workshop organizers.
PhD Forum: short presentations by PhD students, particularly as related to their dissertation; help and responses by a panel of educators.

Workshop Objectives

Since its conception, the Digital Library field has been a very broad
and heterogeneous research arena, attracting practitioners and
researchers from a large number of disciplines. Despite the plethora
of diversely motivated models, systems, and results that have been
developed, no agreement exists yet on the foundations characterizing
and governing Digital Libraries. Nowadays the community is well aware
of the problems generated by such lack of a universally accepted
unifying framework; it is urgent that the current situation is
reversed so that progress in the field can be accelerated.
The recent release of the Reference Model for Digital Libraries (http://www.delos.info/ReferenceModel) by the DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries (http://www.delos.info) represents a first step towards establishing such a unified
framework. In particular, the “DELOS Reference Model” identifies the
basic concepts and relationships characterizing the area and allows
for further additions, expansions, and specializations as the field
evolves.
After JCDL’07 and ECDL’07, this third edition of the Workshop on
“Foundations of Digital Libraries” intends to serve as a vehicle for
consolidating and expanding the DELOS Reference Model as well for
exploring other fundamental aspects of Digital Libraries through
contributions brought by the participants in the workshop. Its
ultimate goal is to stimulate a process that can lead to a
comprehensive and universally accepted model, influencing future
activities and development of Digital Library systems.
To achieve its goals, the workshop will focus on modeling the main
concepts characterizing the Digital Library universe: Content, User,
Functionality, Policy, Quality and Architecture. For each one of these
aspects, papers are solicited that outline modeling challenges and
propose appropriate solutions.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- (Semi-)Formal Models for Digital Libraries
- Theoretical Foundations of Digital Libraries
- Models for Content, User, Functionality, Policy and Quality
- Reference Architectures for Digital Library Systems
- Digital Library Management Systems
- Evaluation of current approaches in modeling Digital Libraries
- Digital Library Interoperability Models and Methodologies
- Preservation Models and Methodologies
- Concrete exploitations and implementations of Digital Library models
Paper Submission and Publication

Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers.
Submitted manuscripts will be limited to 8 pages, following the
guidelines for the LNCS format provided by Springer (http://www.springer.com/east/home/computer/lncs?SGWID=5-164-7-72376-0&teaserId=45515&CENTER_ID=73062
). Preferred formats are PDF or Microsoft Word. Papers should be
submitted via email to DLFoundations2008 AT isti DOT cnr DOT it.
Papers submitted to the workshop will undergo a peer-review process.
Accepted papers will be published as a volume in the DELOS workshop
proceedings series, which will also be made available in the DELOS
digital library. For every accepted paper, at least one author is
required to attend the workshop and present the paper. Depending upon
the number and quality of the submissions, efforts to coordinate
follow-on publications may be made, involving journal publication of
extended versions of some of the accepted papers.

The ECDL Doctoral Consortium aims to bring together PhD students working on the topics related to ECDL 2008 conference.
The workshop will offer PhD students the opportunity to present, discuss, and receive feedback on their research in a constructive and collegial atmosphere. The consortium will be led by research experts in the field of Digital Libraries.
The Doctoral Consortium is intended for students who have already settled on a specific research proposal and have some preliminary results, but still have enough time remaining before submitting their dissertation so that they can benefit from workshop feedback. The
consortium language is English.
PhD students who want to attend the Doctoral Consortium should provide
an extended abstract of the doctoral work. The contribution should be
prepared in accordance with the guidelines for the LNCS format
provided by Springer ( www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html). The extended
abstract should not exceed ten pages and must cover the following aspects:
- a clear formulation of the research topic
- an outline of the significant problems in the field and their
current solutions
- a description of the proposed approach and its expected contributions
- a discussion of preliminary results
- evaluation (-plan) of the research
All contributions must be sent by email, specifying "ECDL 2008 DC
Extended Abstract" in the subject field, by the Doctoral Consortium
submission deadline to doctoral_consortium@ecdl2008.org
Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, correctness,
and clarity. Workshop participation is limited to 15 PhD students.
Accepted abstracts will be distributed to participants and made
available on the web. The consortium participants are in addition
invited to present their research as a poster to the whole ECDL
community during the ECDL conference poster session.

abstract should not exceed ten pages and must cover the following aspects:
- a clear formulation of the research topic
- an outline of the significant problems in the field and their
current solutions
- a description of the proposed approach and its expected contributions
- a discussion of preliminary results
- evaluation (-plan) of the research
All contributions must be sent by email, specifying "ECDL 2008 DC
Extended Abstract" in the subject field, by the Doctoral Consortium
submission deadline to doctoral_consortium@ecdl2008.org
Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, correctness,
and clarity. Workshop participation is limited to 15 PhD students.
Accepted abstracts will be distributed to participants and made
available on the web. The consortium participants are in addition
invited to present their research as a poster to the whole ECDL
community during the ECDL conference poster session.

to present late-breaking results, significant work in progress, or
research that is best communicated in an interactive or graphical
format. Poster and demo presentations further provide researchers with
an opportunity to obtain feedback about their work from a wide range
of persons during the poster session.
Accepted posters and demos will be displayed during a dedicated
session, preceded by a plenary poster spotlight presentation session.
The poster and demo session will allow attendees to have first-hand
views of innovative digital library technologies and applications and
to talk informally with system developers and researchers.
The call is also open for contributions to panels, themes, tutorials

Repositories are being deployed in a variety of settings (research, scholarship, learning, science, cultural heritage) and across a range of scales (subject, national, regional, institutional, project, lab, personal). The aim of this conference is to address the technical, managerial, practical and
theoretical issues that arise from diverse applications of repositories in the increasingly pervasive information environment.
A programme of papers, panel discussions, poster presentations, workshops, tutorials and developer coding sessions will bring together all the key stakeholders in the field. Open source
software community meetings for the major platforms (EPrints, DSpace and Fedora) will also provide opportunities to advance and co-ordinate the development of repository installations across the world.
We invite developers, researchers and practitioners to submit papers describing novel experiences or developments in the construction and use of repositories. Submissions of up to 4
pages in length are requested in PDF or HTML format. Detailed submission instructions will be made available from this page.

Studies centred on the history of reading have proliferated in the last twenty years. They have sprung from several different disciplines, encompassed different periods and geographical locations and chosen divergent methodologies, but their common quest has been to recover and understand the traces of a practice which is central to our understanding of human history, yet notoriously elusive.
One such approach is ‘The Reading Experience Database 1450-1945' (RED), a project run by the Open University and the University of London . While RED is already proving its worth as a digital resource, its methodological parameters are necessarily limited and its vision therefore partial. What is needed in order for the study of the history of reading to progress beyond the boundaries of specific institutions, disciplines, methodologies, geographical locations and time periods is a forum in which as many diverse approaches as possible are brought into energetic debate.
This major 3-day conference, the first of its type, seeks to provide such a forum. We invite 20-minute papers from international students and scholars of any discipline - both within and outside the Humanities – who are interested in the history and practice of reading in any period or geographical location. Topics may include, but are by no means limited to:
-Theories of reading
-Issues of literacy
-National and transnational histories
-Reading and readers in fiction
-Reading communities
-Quantitative versus qualitative methodologies
-Genre reading
-Digital resources and their development
-Visual representations of reading
-Reading across disciplines/languages
-Using historical data in contemporary research fields
-The sociology, psychology and neurology of reading experiences
-Evidence of reading from private audio recordings and blogs
-Finding, compiling, interpreting and preserving the evidence of reading
