Workshop Objectives

Since its conception, the Digital Library field has been a very broad
and heterogeneous research arena, attracting practitioners and
researchers from a large number of disciplines. Despite the plethora
of diversely motivated models, systems, and results that have been
developed, no agreement exists yet on the foundations characterizing
and governing Digital Libraries. Nowadays the community is well aware
of the problems generated by such lack of a universally accepted
unifying framework; it is urgent that the current situation is
reversed so that progress in the field can be accelerated.
The recent release of the Reference Model for Digital Libraries (http://www.delos.info/ReferenceModel) by the DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries (http://www.delos.info) represents a first step towards establishing such a unified
framework. In particular, the “DELOS Reference Model” identifies the
basic concepts and relationships characterizing the area and allows
for further additions, expansions, and specializations as the field
evolves.
After JCDL’07 and ECDL’07, this third edition of the Workshop on
“Foundations of Digital Libraries” intends to serve as a vehicle for
consolidating and expanding the DELOS Reference Model as well for
exploring other fundamental aspects of Digital Libraries through
contributions brought by the participants in the workshop. Its
ultimate goal is to stimulate a process that can lead to a
comprehensive and universally accepted model, influencing future
activities and development of Digital Library systems.
To achieve its goals, the workshop will focus on modeling the main
concepts characterizing the Digital Library universe: Content, User,
Functionality, Policy, Quality and Architecture. For each one of these
aspects, papers are solicited that outline modeling challenges and
propose appropriate solutions.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- (Semi-)Formal Models for Digital Libraries
- Theoretical Foundations of Digital Libraries
- Models for Content, User, Functionality, Policy and Quality
- Reference Architectures for Digital Library Systems
- Digital Library Management Systems
- Evaluation of current approaches in modeling Digital Libraries
- Digital Library Interoperability Models and Methodologies
- Preservation Models and Methodologies
- Concrete exploitations and implementations of Digital Library models
Paper Submission and Publication
--------------------------------
Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers.
Submitted manuscripts will be limited to 8 pages, following the
guidelines for the LNCS format provided by Springer (http://www.springer.com/east/home/computer/lncs?SGWID=5-164-7-72376-0&teaserId=45515&CENTER_ID=73062
). Preferred formats are PDF or Microsoft Word. Papers should be
submitted via email to DLFoundations2008 AT isti DOT cnr DOT it.
Papers submitted to the workshop will undergo a peer-review process.
Accepted papers will be published as a volume in the DELOS workshop
proceedings series, which will also be made available in the DELOS
digital library. For every accepted paper, at least one author is
required to attend the workshop and present the paper. Depending upon
the number and quality of the submissions, efforts to coordinate
follow-on publications may be made, involving journal publication of
extended versions of some of the accepted papers.

JERL aims to inform librarians and other information professionals about evolving work-related processes and procedures, current research and the latest news on topics related to electronic resources and the digital environment's impact on collecting, acquiring, and making
accessible library materials. This issue of JERL will focus on the use of statistics and quantitative or qualitative data analysis relating to the acquisition and management of electronic resources in
libraries. Articles will include original research on journal and database usage statistics, collections decisions, electronic books, and library services in general.
JERL strives to find a balance between original, scholarly research, and practical communications about relevant topics in electronic resources librarianship.
The journal will publish the following types of articles:

JCT is published under the auspices of the Special Interest Group for Computer Teachers (SIGCT) in the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). The primary mission of SIGCT is to enhance precollege instruction in computer science. JCT accepts manuscripts for possible publication in two ways – editor reviewed and peer reviewed.
In the “editor reviewed” process, articles are reviewed by the editor. In the “peer-reviewed” portion of the journal, manuscripts are acknowledged by the editor upon receipt and, after a preliminary review to judge their appropriateness for JCT, are sent to at least two members of the Editorial Review Board. Following the completion of the review process, the editor contacts the author(s) to accept the paper for publication, to accept the paper conditional on the completion of any recommended revisions, or to reject it.
Submission topics include but are not limited to:
• Academic and research articles relating to the teaching of computing in K-12 education
• Pedagogical articles describing and explaining the rationale for some teaching practice, approach, or lesson
• Theoretical articles explaining or arguing particular principles or models of learning, teaching, curriculum development, content perspective-taking, etc.
• Explanatory articles providing teachers with professional development information, e.g., understanding hardware and software (TCP/IP, worm/virus operation, file systems, etc.), conceptual understanding (e.g., encryption, XML), etc.
• Reports concerning computing (e.g., curriculum and policy recommendations)

upcoming OLAC/MOUG conference to be held September 26-28, 2008 in
Cleveland, Ohio.
All applicants should complete the Poster Session Application form (see link below), and submit the completed form via e-mail (preferred), fax or postal mail to the Poster Session Coordinator. Applications will be reviewed by committee. Number of posters selected will depend on
available exhibition space. Applicants will be notified by August 1, 2008 whether or not their posters have been selected.
OLAC/MOUG provides the easels and tables; you provide the posters, graphics and handouts for your presentation. Presenters should plan to bring at least 50 copies of their handouts. Please make sure your contact information is on the handout. No network applications will be
available; however, you may bring a battery-powered laptop computer for your presentation. Presenters should plan to be present for the entire poster session time period.

But when they become the lucrative, marketed, popularized property of all, what gets lost? Moreover, what of the authority? This panel looks to compare the late 20th century rise of the graphic novel and comic book series, particularly the new discourses being employed by the widening audience/market for the form in the present context. How have standards changed? What machinery has been put in place concerning the analysis of the comic book, and how does that now reflect back on its creation?

The Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Libraries Conference 2009 is slated for Wednesday, April 29 - Friday, May 1, 2009 at Grand Traverse Resort. The conference theme is "Small Libraries, BIG Service!"
We are looking for program submissions to go with this theme and with the tracks on library administration (including trustees), celebrating Michigan, literature/readers advisory/collection development, programming and marketing, and technology.
Please see the call for programs and the conference program proposal form. To all Librarians, Entrepreneurs, and Innovators:
We seek pioneers, adventurers and inventors to tell their stories. The libraries of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Wake Forest University are organizing a conference entitled, "Inspiration, Innovation, Celebration: an Entrepreneurial Conference for Librarians".
We strive to provide a forum for you to share your path to change.
Conference dates: June 3rd and 4th, 2009 in the Elliott University Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
The mission for this conference is threefold:
1) To share and celebrate entrepreneurial accomplishments in libraries
2) To inspire each other to innovate in our libraries
3) To create a community of interested librarians who will perpetuate the discussion beyond the conference
Entrepreneurial activity may have taken place in areas such as: instruction, services, processes, facilities or resources, but this list is not exhaustive. We're interested in hearing about your process and the successful presentation could include the following:
* Identification of an unmet need or development of an innovative approach that extends the scope of service
* A non-traditional approach to fulfilling our mission as libraries
* A description of how a solution was designed and implemented including any obstacles that were encountered (financial, structural, human...)
* A discussion of lessons learned or what you would do differently next time and the project's current status
* A description of the keys to success
* A tone that inspires us all to become more entrepreneurial in our libraries, however small the project
Format:
* Sessions should be one hour in length to include 45 minute presentation with 15 minutes for Q&A.
* We will accept panel discussions
Timing:
* If interested, submit a letter of intent - a one paragraph description of your presentation - immediately. Those who submit a letter of intent by September 1st will receive priority consideration.
* Please submit your final proposal by 5:00 pm on Monday 1 November 2008; it should include a detailed outline of the presentation with a textual description of the entrepreneurial project.
* Photos, drawings or other multi-media aids are welcome; display space will be available at the conference.
* Invitations to present will be delivered by mid-December

Background and Significance:
Folksonomy is a user-generated system that allows users to tag their favorite web resources with their chosen natural-language words or phrases. These tags can be used to classify web resources and to express users’ preferences. Folksonomy may be generated and shared collaboratively by the creators and consumers of web content.
Contributions to this Special Issue (Volume 5, Number 3) should address Folksonomies, Taxonomies, Knowledge Organizartion, the Web and Search Engines. Papers are solicited on, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Folksonomies
- Taxonomies
- Search engines
- Information retrieval
- Social bookmarking
- Social tagging
- Social classification
- Social softwares
- Social networks
- Social indexing
- Collaborative tagging
- Controlled vocabulary
- Knowledge organization
- Knowledge management
- The role of the folksonomy in information retrieval

Blogging on the SLA Blog is not a full-time commitment...we're looking for a few posts from the member's perpective about the sessions, CE courses, the INFO-EXPO, Seattle itself, and tips for getting the most out of the experience...anything your fellow attendees and colleagues at home would want to hear about.

Libraries of all types and sizes, share your creative, great public relations efforts with your colleagues! Gain international exposure for your library’s marketing and promotional items by sending them to “Swap & Shop: Hot Ideas for Cool PR,” at ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim.
The annual Swap & Shop event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 29, in the Special Events Area in Hall D of the exhibit floor at the Anaheim Convention Center. ALA attendees will have the opportunity to fill their free Swap & Shop tote bag with the very best samples of library public relations (annual reports, newsletters, reading promotions, and more). More than 950 library professionals attended Swap & Shop in 2007.
Your items must be received by Friday, June 20. All shipments (please send 50-200 copies of your items) MUST have a Swap & Shop Shipping label – please cut out and use the label at the bottom.
We will display your materials proudly at Swap & Shop, which will also feature the winners of the Best of Show contest (a juried selection of the best PR materials produced in the past year), the John Cotton Dana Awards for outstanding achievement in library public relations, PR Makeovers of an academic and public library, and more.
