CFP: RUSA CODES Materials Reviewing Committee (ALA Annual, Anaheim, 2008)
The RUSA CODES Materials Reviewing Committee is asking for suggestions for speakers at its proposed program for the 2008 ALA Annual Conference. The following is the abstract of this Program:
“The program will look at reviewing sources for materials that are not covered in the traditional reviewing sources and at alternative sources for all types of reviews. Potential topics include reviews for web resources and electronic databases, genre fiction, graphic novels, alternative press publications, gray literature, and other formats. One speaker might also talk about review sources on the Web with a focus on alternative resources.”
Please email me if you would like to volunteer or have names to suggest. The Committee would also invite any potential speakers or anyone interested in helping with the program to attend its ALA committee meeting that will take place on Saturday, June 23 at 10:30 am in California Room of the Capital Hilton.
Thanks.

Call for Contributions: Biographical Dictionary of New Chinese Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders
Call for Contributions: Biographical Dictionary of New Chinese Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders
Scheduled to be published by Edward Elgar in 2008-09, the Biographical Dictionary of New Chinese Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders will provide up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of major players of Chinese economy since the reform era began in 1978. Edited by Professors Wenxian Zhang and Ilan Alon of Rollins College, the emphasis of the reference book is on the movers and shakers of China’s new economy, highlighting notable figures from both the initial economic liberalization period and the renewed growth from the early 1990s to the present time. The geographic focus of the book will be the mainland China, and the majority of the subjects are mainland Chinese, defined as those who were born and brought up in China, no matter what passports they might hold today. The selection will be based mainly on the roles an individual played in the Chinese economic development, and people from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and other parts of the world who conduct significant business in the People’s Republic of China will also be included.
The biographical dictionary will contain 150-200 entries, each should be 300-1,000 words in length, briefly summarizing an individual’s life and careers, with a central focus on his or her accomplishments and the key roles played in the new Chinese economy. Three to five references should be provided at the end of each entry. Potential contributors may view the list of available entries at: web.rollins.edu/~wzhang/nce.htm. You may suggest other entrepreneurs or business leaders not listed along with a justification to the editors. Each contributor is expected to write five entries and 2,500 words, and, in return, will receive contributor acknowledgment in each entry and a copy of the dictionary when it is published. Seeking Submissions from U.S. Writers for Proposed Book (Women as Writers: Insider Tips from Successful Women Writers)
Foreword by Robbi Hess, Journalist, Co-Author, Complete Idiot's Guide to 30,000 Baby Names (Penguin Books); Editor, Byline Magazine, http://www.bylinemag.com/
Afterword by Suzanne Bunkers, Professor of English, Minnesota State University, editor of Diaries of Girls and Women: a Midwestern American Sampler (University of Wisconsin Press).
Word total for two or three articles based on your experience is 2,000 words; maximum 3,000. One article may be 1,000 words, another 1,000 (or three 667 word articles) to reach the required 2,000 words. One co-author may be used but all two or three articles must be co-authored with the same co-author.
Markets for women, why women write, writing styles, time management, using life experience, women's magazines, critique groups, romance writing, networking, blogs, unique issues women must overcome, promotion, lesbian and bisexual writing, education, queries and proposals, conference participation, family scheduling, feminist writing, self-publishing, are just a few areas women writers are interested.
Practical, concise, how-to articles with bullets/headings have
proven the most helpful. Please avoid writing solely about "me" and the personal: concentrate on what will help the reader. No previously published or simultaneously submitted material. Contributors receive a complimentary copy and contributor's discount on additional copies. It is common for compilation of an anthology to take upwards of a year, but we will be in touch with all contributors with updates on securing a publisher.

In our experience, most publishers return rights to individual contributors variously after publication. However, because we are still seeking a publisher, we cannot speak to those rights specifically at this time. Contributors will be asked to sign a release form from the publisher and therefore will be have the opportunity to agree to the details of the contract or withdraw one's work at that time.
