Call for chapters: Reference in the Modern World(s)
Reference has gotten more complicated in recent years, with the plethora of materials online and in paper, more ways to ask questions and deliver answers, a larger multicultural public, and interdisciplinary subjects. All this is complicated by declining budgets as usage increases.
This is a call for chapters for a new book that covers these issues and more, for public and academic libraries. New authors as well as experienced authors are welcome. Chapters can be co-written. The deadlines are short to get it to press while still timely; a letter of commitment is needed by June 1, with a brief abstract or outline of topics and a short CV. Please feel free to ask
questions!

Reference for the unattached - freelancers, distance students, entrepeneurs, home schoolers, military, self-employed Business and academic support in the library, and vice versa

Facts On File and the advisors for the Encyclopedia of American Disability History are looking for contributors.
This three-volume reference work will cover basic information on important events, issues, developments, laws, biographies, and related topics in American Disability History. Entries on significant historical themes and concepts—including civil rights, war, public policy, citizenship, media, institutions, education, and technology—will examine both practical and theoretical factors, as well as demonstrate the deeper meaning of the lived experience of disability. Each entry will illustrate the subject within an historical context, and show that while disability has existed throughout American History, disability is neither a fixed nor static concept but one whose definition and understanding have changed markedly from era to era.
Because accessibility is a major issue in Disability History, the entries in this reference will accommodate a broad, diverse audience, from high school students to general readers, to individuals who assist people with disabilities. Clear language, accessible prose, and coherent, balanced, jargon-free interpretations are essential for every article.
The editors of this encyclopedia are currently seeking contributors for a wide range of entries.

A reminder of the January 7th deadline for submitting proposals for the
Reference Research Forum at ALA Annual 2008 in Anaheim.

The Research and Statistics Committee of the Reference Services Section of RUSA is sponsoring its Fourteenth Reference Research Forum, "New Reference Research," at the 2008 American Library Association Annual Conference, Anaheim, CA.
This is an opportunity to present and discuss your research project conducted in the broad area of reference services such as user behavior, electronic services, reference effectiveness, and organizational structure and personnel.
Both completed research and research in progress will be considered. All researchers, including reference practitioners from all types of libraries, library school faculty and students, and other interested individuals, are encouraged to submit a proposal.
The Committee employs a "blind" review process to select a maximum of three (3) projects for 25 minute presentations, followed by open discussion. The selected researchers are required to present their papers in person at the forum. Criteria for selection are:
..Significance of the study for improving the quality of reference service;
..Quality and creativity of the research design and methodologies;
..Potential for research to fill a gap in reference knowledge or to build on previous studies;
..Previously published research or research accepted for publication will not be accepted.
Please submit a one-page proposal by Monday, January 7, 2008. Notification of acceptance will be made by Friday, March 21, 2008. The submission must consist of no more than two pages. On the first page, please list your name(s), title (s), institutional affiliation(s), and address(es)
(including your mailing address, fax number and email address).
The second page should NOT show your name or any personal information.
Instead, it must include:

This is the second message asking for authors for needed articles for the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Sciences. We are attempting to wrap up the invitation process for the encyclopedia, and have a just a few articles remaining to be assigned. Sometimes we didn't know who to ask, other times people have had to withdraw, and so on, so we still have some articles.
Due to a technical glitch, my last email request did not go out to the ASIST list, so I am repeating a few topics that appeared there, even though I have some preliminary volunteers. We are looking for people who have knowledge of the specified area, so please tell me about your qualifications to write on the topic(s) you are interested in.
Thanks for your interest; we got a number of volunteers for the first list I sent out a few days ago, and we are sorting that out to make invitations.
Please volunteer asap--by August 7 at the latest.

We are inviting academic editorial contributors to the Encyclopedia of Stem Cell Research, a new reference for undergraduate students and the general public addressing all aspects of stem cell research, including research and clinical procedures, definitions of terms, biographies of major researchers and their work, profiles of research institutions, organizations, and corporations, descriptions of therapies, and thematic topics on ethics, religion and government regulation.
We are starting the assignment process for articles that will be due November 1, 2007.
This comprehensive project is a two-volume encyclopedia for college, public, and health libraries to be published by Sage Reference in 2008. The work is made up of some 350 articles.
Each article, ranging from 900 to 3500 words, is signed by the contributor.
The General Editors for the encyclopedia are: Clive Niels Svendsen, Ph.D., Director, NIH T32 Stem Cell Training Program, University of Wisconsin–Madison and Allison D. Ebert, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow, Stem Cell Research Program, University of Wisconsin–Madison. Drs. Svendsen and Ebert will review all the articles for academic consistency.
If you are interested in contributing to the encyclopedia, it can be a notable publication addition to your CV/resume and broaden your publishing credits. Sage Publications offers an honorarium ranging from Sage book credits for smaller articles up to a free set of the encyclopedia (approximately a $300 value) for contributions totaling 10,000 words or more.

We are seeking additional contributions for the articles that will ultimately make-up the chapters of The Business of Entertainment (Movies, Music, & Television), a 3 volume series under contract with Praeger Press. We will accept abstracts and/or papers for all volumes but we are especially interested in articles for Volumes 2 & 3. Please pass this call on to any colleagues you think might be interested.
Accepted articles will be between 5,000 to 10,000 words, including works cited, and will adhere to the Chicago style. We welcome contributions from professors, grad students and non-academic experts as well. Please e-mail completed articles or abstracts of no more than 300 words to sickelrc@whitman.edu by July 31, 2007. Also, please e-mail with any questions or requests for further information.
This series will detail the ways in which the media conglomerates that control the contemporary entertainment industry exploit the synergies between their companies. What does all this mean to us, the consumers, the end users who just want to be entertained and want to have a wide selection of options from which to choose? How and why are choices affected and for the sake of what or whom? In investigating the answers to these questions and many more, these texts will collectively illuminate the business of contemporary entertainment in a way that will appeal not only to academics and students, but to general readers as well. While each of the books will be about a specific industry, there will be great analytical overlap, which is by design as the industries themselves desire as much overlap as possible so as to maximize control and profitability.
The following are prompts for the kind of things we’re looking for. Please be advised that we’re not wedded to any one topic and are quite open to suggestions.

Scheduled to be published by Edward Elgar in 2008-09, the Biographical Dictionary of New Chinese Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders will provide up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of major players of Chinese economy since the reform era began in 1978. Edited by Professors Wenxian Zhang and Ilan Alon of Rollins College, the emphasis of the reference book is on the movers and shakers of China’s new economy, highlighting notable figures from both the initial economic liberalization period and the renewed growth from the early 1990s to the present time. The geographic focus of the book will be the mainland China, and the majority of the subjects are mainland Chinese, defined as those who were born and brought up in China, no matter what passports they might hold today. The selection will be based mainly on the roles an individual played in the Chinese economic development, and people from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and other parts of the world who conduct significant business in the People’s Republic of China will also be included.
The biographical dictionary will contain 150-200 entries, each should be 300-1,000 words in length, briefly summarizing an individual’s life and careers, with a central focus on his or her accomplishments and the key roles played in the new Chinese economy. Three to five references should be provided at the end of each entry. Potential contributors may view the list of available entries at: web.rollins.edu/~wzhang/nce.htm. You may suggest other entrepreneurs or business leaders not listed along with a justification to the editors. Each contributor is expected to write five entries and 2,500 words, and, in return, will receive contributor acknowledgment in each entry and a copy of the dictionary when it is published. The project is aimed at the academic high school and undergraduate levels. The General Editors are Gina Misiroglu, independent scholar, and Dr. Karen Karbiener of New York University.
The encyclopedia includes articles on individuals, organizations, themes, events, ideas, works of art and literature, and more. Articles vary in length from 500-2,000 words for entries on specific topics (depending on significance). Counterculture will also include a number of ancillary features, including a detailed bibliography.
