CALL FOR SPEAKERS - CUBL Breakfast @ SLA 2010 in New Orleans

We are currently planning the annual College and University Business Libraries (CUBL) Section breakfast for next year's SLA Annual Conference in New Orleans and are looking for three (3) people interested in sharing their experiences or research with their colleagues. We had an
incredible turnout for our breakfast in Washington, D.C. last year and expect even more people to attend in New Orleans. Do you want to share your ideas and experiences? If so, then read on.

This year's breakfast theme will be "Advancing within the Academy: Moving on Up."

The CUBL breakfast will feature a panel discussion on advancement and promotion issues within college and university libraries, including scholarly publishing by academic librarians, tenure versus non-tenure positions and a wide range of other promotion and advancement topics.

If you are interested in speaking (15 minutes or so) on any of these topics, or if there other topics you think may be of interest to CUBL members, please let me know. You'll have to come up with your own clever presentation title, though! Please contact me no later than next
Friday, November 6, 2009 if you are interested.

We are seeking chapter proposals for a new edited collection on corporate libraries. This book will be an edited collection of chapters describing best practices in a variety of corporate libraries worldwide, providing both a foundation of knowledge for scholars in library and information science areas and information and ideas for practicing corporate librarians. The editors have obtained an interest from the publisher, and a contract is pending a list of potential chapters and contributors.

Please submit a proposal of 250 words, or a full chapter, for consideration.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

Planning a Corporate Library, including chapters on topics such as design, architecture, and facility planning, budget and staffing, long range planning, technology planning, hiring, recruiting, and training for a new library.

The Special Libraries Association is pleased to announce its 2010 Annual Conference and INFO-EXPO, to be held 13-16 June in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. The theme of the conference is “Entering SLA's Next Century: Let the Good Times Roll."

It's no secret that today's changing technology and more demanding management expectations require information professionals to demonstrate a positive impact on their organizations. You have to be a great researcher and manager, but you also have to help your organization put knowledge to work as a strategic asset -- across the enterprise, day in and day out.

What should I know about the SLA Annual Conference and INFO-EXPO?

The SLA Annual Conference and INFO-EXPO is the premier networking and educational event for information professionals. The conference takes place over four days, with additional days for continuing education and local tourism. For more information, visit the conference Web site:

What should I know about conference planning?

The SLA Annual Conference is planned on an 18-month timeline. The Annual Conference Advisory Council sets the parameters of conference programming, including (but not limited to) schedule, keynotes, time blocks, and theme. In addition to this council, divisions and caucuses devise the educational sessions that are put on Monday through Wednesday of the conference. If you are a member of SLA, you should approach your unit chair or unit planner with your conference programming idea before submitting it to SLA headquarters. Proposals submitted directly to SLA headquarters will be forwarded to the appropriate unit(s). Continuing education courses may be organized either through divisions or through SLA headquarters.

What types of submissions are you looking for?

* Presentations *
Educational sessions are held Monday through Wednesday of the conference. Sessions may be 60, 90, or 120 minutes in length. Presentation ideas should be submitted to the unit chair or unit planner. These presentations can be panels, lectures, roundtables or any learning format that you think would be appropriate.

* Contributed Papers *
An opportunity to share your knowledge! Are you using your expert knowledge and talents to shape the future? Do you have a vision of what the future will look like? Are others inspired by your ideas, innovations, and passion? How is your workplace preparing for the future? Do you have valuable insight from lessons learned that could help other information professionals? If so, here is your opportunity to engage in scholarship and share that knowledge with your peers. SLA is now accepting proposals for papers to be presented at its Annual
Conference June 14-17, 2009 in Washington, D.C., with the theme
"Information to Inspiration: Knowledge & Vision Shaping the Future."
Accepted papers will also be published on the SLA website.

Every SLA member is eligible and encouraged to apply. The deadline for
submitting a proposal is December 12, 2008. All proposals should be

Proposals should be approximately 250-300 words in length. The proposals
will be evaluated by a panel of SLA members in a blind review and the
strongest will be selected for development into full papers due May 1,
2009.

Topics of the papers should be related to library science, information
management, research or other issues related to customer service,
technology, or administration in special libraries. Proposals will be
judged on their relevance to the conference theme "Information to
Inspiration" or the tag "Knowledge and Vision Shaping the Future", as
well on the strength of the idea, quality of writing, and potential
member interest.

I am currently planning the CUBL breakfast for next year’s SLA Conference in Washington, D.C. and am looking for people interested in sharing their experiences or research with their colleagues. Attending the Annual Conference is always energizing. We should capitalize on that energy by sharing ideas that can be implemented when we all return to our own libraries. Do you want to share your ideas? If so, then read on.

This year’s theme will be “Trends in Business School Outreach: Connecting to Faculty and Students” Some proposed topics include:

Embedded librarianship. Although this topic has been covered at SLA in the past, it continues to evolve and grow as more and more classes are being offered through distance programs. Have you had a good experience with it. Would you like to offer advice for those who have not yet become embedded librarian?

Outreach to business school faculty. Have you been successful in reaching out to your business faculty? Have you increased library instruction requests? How have you been creative in getting them to use and promote the library’s resources? Who are key people to have on your side?

Connecting with business students. How have you marketed yourself and your services to business school students? Do you provide handouts, workshops or individual research sessions? Have you created a “library buzz,” or are you known as “library-guy (or gal)”?

Perceptions and use of library resources after library instruction. What are students saying after your library instruction sessions? What works and what does not? Can professors see a difference in the quality of student work after a library session?

The San Diego Chapter of the Special Libraries Association is seeking speakers for our annual full-day professional development seminar to be held at Amylin Pharmaceuticals in San Diego on October 3, 2008.

The seminar theme is "Web Services: Embracing the Web as the Library's Core Service Space."

Please mark your calendar to attend the seminar and consider submitting a proposal to speak at the seminar.

Topics speakers may address include but aren't limited to:

* Web management: Content management systems, portals
* eCollections: eBooks, eJournals, collection development and assessment, vendor negotiation
* Website marketing: Embedding technologies
* Evaluating Web 2.0 tools: Choosing the best to implement among the ever-emerging range of prominent candidates


Especially, we're looking for speakers to cover:

* Practical applications (how-to) and not just theory
* Case studies demonstrating innovation and relevant to academic libraries, corporate libraries and other types of special libraries
* Impacts and metrics relating to using the Web as a library's core service space

Speakers discussing case studies will want to cover how initiatives came about, how they were implemented, what daily functioning looked like, benefits to all parties and lessons learned. Success is not required, as we often learn more from what went wrong.

Each speaker will have approximately 45 minutes, for her or his presentation and Q&A. Speakers may be invited to join a panel, in which case the time allotted may differ.

We encourage submissions from librarians and LIS graduate students working in all types of libraries. SLA membership is not required.

We are accepting papers for the next issue of Education Libraries, a peer-reviewed journal published by SLA's Education Division. This journal is indexed in ERIC, and WilsonWeb's Library Literature and Information Science.

SLib is looking for bold, dynamic and assertive individuals to submit papers to be presented at the upcoming SLib 2008.

Inline with the theme Knowledge Communities: Rising to the Performance Challenges, SLib is the platform where information professionals, specifically those in the special library environment can share their knowledge and experiences with each other.

Abstract Submission

Abstract must not exceed 200 words, using 12 point type for text, 14 point type for title, and single spacing. All abstracts should be in Microsoft word document or Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). Authors should submit their abstract together with a copy of their biodata and passport-sized picture via electronic to papers@slib-petronas.com . Only selected abstract will be notified.

Abstracts should clearly state the purpose, results and conclusions of the work to be described in the final paper. Final acceptance will be based on the full-length paper, which if accepted for publication, must be presented at the conference. To be fair to all participants, each registered delegate will only be able to submit one paper.

After a great success with the SLib 2005, this biennial Conference is once again being organised by PETRONAS Petroleum Resource Centre in collaboration with Librarians Association of Malaysia (PPM- Persatuan Pustakawan Malaysia)

With a theme of Knowledge Communities: Rising to the Performance Challenges, we hope it will be another platform to discuss, collaborate and have a good networking session with our professional colleagues from all over the world.
