Are you using your expert knowledge and talents to shape the future? Do
you have a vision of what the future will look like? Are others
inspired by your ideas, innovations, and passion? How is your
workplace preparing for the future? Do you have valuable insight from
lessons learned that could help other information professionals? If so,
here is your opportunity to engage in scholarship and share that
knowledge with your peers.

SLA is now accepting proposals for papers to be presented at its Annual
Conference June 14-17, 2009 in Washington, D.C., with the theme
"Information to Inspiration: Knowledge & Vision Shaping the Future."
Accepted papers will also be published on the SLA website.

Every SLA member is eligible and encouraged to apply. The deadline for
submitting a proposal is December 12, 2008. All proposals should be
sent via email to: jwheeler@ucalgary.ca.

Proposals should be approximately 250-300 words in length. The proposals
will be evaluated by a panel of SLA members in a blind review and the
strongest will be selected for development into full papers due May 1,
2009.

Topics of the papers should be related to library science, information
management, research or other issues related to customer service,
technology, or administration in special libraries. Proposals will be
judged on their relevance to the conference theme "Information to
Inspiration" or the tag "Knowledge and Vision Shaping the Future", as
well on the strength of the idea, quality of writing, and potential
member interest.

Date/Time: Monday, June 15, 2009 – 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Business is everywhere. As a result, business information literacy is crucial to success in almost every aspect of daily life in academic, corporate or public library environments.

In this call for posters, the Business and Finance Division of SLA is providing an opportunity for business librarians to share ideas on this important topic. We are looking for case studies or practical applications on a wide range of issues including:

• Standards and competencies for business information literacy
• Pedagogic approaches to business information literacy education
• Assessment of learning outcomes
• Integrating business information literacy in the curriculum
• Librarian / faculty collaboration
• New technologies for teaching business information literacy
• Business information literacy in multi-disciplinary contexts
• Professional development for business information literacy
• Promoting business information literacy in the corporate environment

Help your colleagues learn from your work, both successful and unsuccessful.
Share the results of your efforts at the upcoming poster session at SLA in Washington, June 2009.

CALL FOR SPEAKERS: CUBL Breakfast, SLA 2009 in Washington, D.C.

I am currently planning the CUBL breakfast for next year’s SLA Conference in Washington, D.C. and am looking for people interested in sharing their experiences or research with their colleagues. Attending the Annual Conference is always energizing. We should capitalize on that energy by sharing ideas that can be implemented when we all return to our own libraries. Do you want to share your ideas? If so, then read on.

This year’s theme will be “Trends in Business School Outreach: Connecting to Faculty and Students” Some proposed topics include:

Embedded librarianship. Although this topic has been covered at SLA in the past, it continues to evolve and grow as more and more classes are being offered through distance programs. Have you had a good experience with it. Would you like to offer advice for those who have not yet become embedded librarian?

Outreach to business school faculty. Have you been successful in reaching out to your business faculty? Have you increased library instruction requests? How have you been creative in getting them to use and promote the library’s resources? Who are key people to have on your side?

Connecting with business students. How have you marketed yourself and your services to business school students? Do you provide handouts, workshops or individual research sessions? Have you created a “library buzz,” or are you known as “library-guy (or gal)”?

Perceptions and use of library resources after library instruction. What are students saying after your library instruction sessions? What works and what does not? Can professors see a difference in the quality of student work after a library session?

If you are interested in speaking (15 minutes or so) on any of these topics, or if there other topics you think may be of interest to CUBL members, please let me know. We have spots for three (3) speakers. You’ll have to come up with your own clever presentation title, though!

SLA-SD Fall Seminar Call for Speakers

The San Diego Chapter of the Special Libraries Association is seeking speakers for our annual full-day professional development seminar to be held at Amylin Pharmaceuticals in San Diego on October 3, 2008.

The seminar theme is "Web Services: Embracing the Web as the Library's Core Service Space."

Please mark your calendar to attend the seminar and consider submitting a proposal to speak at the seminar.

Topics speakers may address include but aren't limited to:

* Web management: Content management systems, portals
* eCollections: eBooks, eJournals, collection development and assessment, vendor negotiation
* Website marketing: Embedding technologies
* Evaluating Web 2.0 tools: Choosing the best to implement among the ever-emerging range of prominent candidates


Especially, we're looking for speakers to cover:

* Practical applications (how-to) and not just theory
* Case studies demonstrating innovation and relevant to academic libraries, corporate libraries and other types of special libraries
* Impacts and metrics relating to using the Web as a library's core service space

Speakers discussing case studies will want to cover how initiatives came about, how they were implemented, what daily functioning looked like, benefits to all parties and lessons learned. Success is not required, as we often learn more from what went wrong.

Each speaker will have approximately 45 minutes, for her or his presentation and Q&A. Speakers may be invited to join a panel, in which case the time allotted may differ.

We encourage submissions from librarians and LIS graduate students working in all types of libraries. SLA membership is not required.
