Bernard Malamud, John Updike, Don DeLillo, Philip Roth, Paul Beatty, Jenifer Levin—these are just a few of our most ambitious and highly regarded American writers who have produced thoughtful, significant literary fiction about the world of sports. In their work and the work of others, we see how the arena or field of play is a stage upon which passionate human dramas about almost every aspect of American culture are performed.
This collection seeks to build upon the strong critical foundation laid by Wiley Lee Umphlett, Michael Oriard, Christian Messenger, and many others. The volume editors, who produced the scholarly collection Upon Further Review: Sports in American Literature (Praeger, 2004), seek a variety of scholarly essays on themes in sports fiction for an audience of advanced high school students and undergraduate readers.
Please submit abstracts of 500 words for chapters (7,000 words) that analyze a theme as it appears in commonly studied as well as newer works of literary sports fiction. The editors prefer an American fiction focus.
The abstract should be accompanied by a short biography and sent to Michael Cocchiarale (mfcocchiarale@mail.widener.edu) or Scott D. Emmert (scott.emmert@uwc.edu) by April 13, 2012. Notification of acceptance will be given by April 30. Completed chapters will be due by August 1, 2012.
