CFP: Journal of Web Librarianship Issue on Library Intranets

The Journal of Web Librarianship is pleased to announce an upcoming special issue, "Library Intranets 2.0." Manuscript proposals are now being accepted!

Web 2.0 tools have dramatically increased opportunities for communication and collaboration in all areas of our online lives. Library literature abounds with accounts of how libraries are successfully using these tools to connect with users, but how are librarians and library staff leveraging 2.0 technologies to improve internal communication? This special peer-reviewed issue of the Journal of Web Librarianship focuses on use of 2.0 tools, technologies, and philosophies for creating organizational synergy via Web 2.0 intranets in all kinds of libraries.

Nina McHale, Assistant Professor and Web Librarian at the University of Colorado Denver, will be guest editing this special issue. She has experience in reference and systems, and prior to coming to Auraria Library, she held academic positions at Howard Community College (Columbia, Maryland) and Georgetown University. Her research interests include Web and Library 2.0, usability testing, user-centered design, and federated searching. She holds a joint MA/MSLS in English and library science from The Catholic University of America.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

-identifying/creating best practices for internal information sharing (formats, workflow, access control, etc.)
-2.0 tools for improving internal communication
-use of open source software, i.e., Drupal, MediaWiki, for library intranets
-use of proprietary products, i.e., Microsoft SharePoint
-migrating intranets, managing content
-failed intranets: lessons learned
-2.0 buy-in and staff training
-spanning physical distances: connecting consortium members, branches, etc.

Query letters and preliminary proposals are welcome if potential authors would like to discuss their ideas with the editors. Timeline:
November 1, 2009 - Manuscript submissions due.

The ALCTS Catalog Form & Function IG will be meeting in its usual high-impact, high-conflict time slot at ALA Annual this year, this time at the Chicago Hilton, the main conference hotel. Our topic this summer will be *Accentuating the "e-"*, and we are currently looking for presenters for that session. Presentations should be approximately 15 minutes in length with 10 minutes for follow-up questions.

*Accentuating the "e-"*: Libraries are increasingly looking for ways to draw attention to their growing local and consortial investments in e-resources by flagging these titles in the catalog, adding URLs to print and e-versions, adding search filters or facets for "Online", "Internet", "e-book", and "e-journal" offerings, creating external lists, RSS feeds, and so on. We will look at some of these methods and see if they are really serving the need they were intended to serve.

A separate call will be made within CFFIG, seeking nominations for the office of Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect. At the conclusion of Annual, the role of Chair is to pass to Richard R. Guajardo of the University of Houston. Congratulations Richard!

In a world where funding is decreasing and demand is increasing, libraries and librarians are looking for ways to provide access to content without submitting their bottom line to costly and sometimes little-used online journal subscriptions.

The ALCTS CCS Electronic Resources Interest Group invites proposals for its panel discussion at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, on Saturday, July 11, 2009, from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

The discussion will center on the experiences of libraries and electronic resources librarians as they implement and manage transactional access models at their institutions. The panelists will
discuss why transactional access was right for their institution, the driving forces behind their decisions, the implementation process, technical implementation and management of the access, and the outcomes of their endeavors. The panelist presentations will be followed with a question and answer session, as well as an open forum for audience members to share their experience(s) with the session participants.

Serials in the 21st century: new concepts, new challenges

The IFLA Serials and Other Continuing Resources Section (SOCRS) invites librarians and other interested parties to submit proposals for papers for the 2-hour open session in Milan.

Electronic formats have altered traditional ways of acquiring, cataloging and managing library materials. The lines are blurring between e-books, e-journals, and article databases. The division of functions in Acquisitions, Cataloging and Collection Development, as well as Public Services, which have until now been based on the types of material (continuing resources vs. monographs), are becoming less clear. Almost all e-resources have a seriality aspect. Are e-books the new continuing resource?

If the work of managing and servicing e-resources is being done in serials units (whether Acquisitions or Cataloging), then who handles “new” serials such as e-books and where do they fit in? Should they be included in ERMs? What kind of training and communication is needed for efficient work with e-resources? How do libraries adapt to this paradigm shift?

We especially invite papers that address the following topics:

*Organizational models for work with e-resources. What works and what doesn’t?

*E-books from selection to access: some new approaches

*New challenges as new opportunities

Please send a detailed abstract in English (1 page or at least 300 words) of the proposed paper (which must not have been published elsewhere) and relevant biographical information of author(s)/presenter(s) by February 15th 2009 via e-mail to: Eva-Lisa Holm Granath, Secretary of SOCRS, e-mail: evaho@bibl.liu.se

The abstracts will be reviewed by members of the Serials and Other Continuing Resources Section´s Standing Committee. Successful proposals will be identified by March 8th 2009 Full papers will be due by May 1st 2009 to allow time for review of papers and preparation of translations. Papers should be no longer than 10-20 pages. 10-15 minutes will be allowed for a summary delivery of the paper during the Section's open session in Milan. We aim for a broader range coverage with slightly shorter presentations.

Please note that the expenses of attending the Milan conference will be the responsibility of the author(s)/presenter(s) of accepted papers, and at least one of the authors/presenters must be present for the program.
