Call for Chapters: A Handbook for Trans and Gender Diverse Inclusion in Library Work #ACRL Publication

The editors of A Handbook for Trans and Gender Diverse Inclusion in Library Work (tentative title) invite chapter proposals. The book will be published by ACRL Publications, and will be an edited volume focusing on how library workers in different library types and across different services can concretely implement trans and gender diverse inclusion. It will highlight real-world case studies, research-based guidance, and recommended practices for how library workers can support trans and gender diverse people in the course of their many different jobs and duties to help library workers bridge the gap between meaning well toward trans people, and implementing trans and gender diverse inclusion in library work.

Proposals are due August 31, 2024. More information can be found on the book’s proposal page.

For those interested in submitting a proposal or learning more about the book, the editors will be holding two identical information sessions to introduce the project and to answer questions from potential authors. Information sessions will take place over Zoom and will not be recorded. Register to attend using this form.

This is a unique opportunity for you to showcase your work, insights, and experiences related to OER and make a valuable contribution to the summit.

Call for Submissions - UKSG 2025, Brighton UK

UKSG 2025: Call for suggestions

We are pleased to announce that an in-person event is scheduled to take place from 31 March-2 April 2025 in Brighton, UK.

The conference attracts delegates from across the global knowledge community, including librarians, publishers, intermediaries, technology vendors, consultants and more. It provides a friendly and inclusive forum with a reputation for showcasing initiatives, exploring trends and connecting people from across the sector. Like many conferences, we welcome developed proposals from those who wish to deliver or co-deliver plenary sessions, breakout sessions, workshops and lightning talks. These proposals ultimately form the core of our programme. However, we also welcome suggestions on themes, topics, and initiatives. In all cases, we welcome recommendations for speakers alongside topic ideas. This approach is one of the distinctive and defining features of how we co-develop our programme. A critical part of our strategic vision is that UKSG will represent the diversity of the global knowledge community. Our annual conference should reflect a variety of perspectives and backgrounds - and we particularly want to encourage and include those from under-represented communities.
If you have something interesting to say but do not feel you are ready for a plenary, break-out session or workshop, we can provide supportive mentors to help you prepare, or you might consider presenting a shorter lightning talk or poster.

Have you had an experience in the classroom, a reference consultation, or other teaching interaction where a subtle shift in attention, a pause to give space for internal processing, or a choice to value presence over the plan resulted in an unexpectedly meaningful learning moment?  Whether you knew it or not, you were likely engaging in emergent strategy, and we would love for you to share your story and your voice in a new collection, Emergent Strategy in Library Instruction: Stories, Reflections and Imaginings, forthcoming from Library Juice Press in 2026, edited by Leah Morin and Hazel McClure. 

This book is inspired by adrienne maree brown's concept of emergent strategy, a feminist, afrofuturist exploration of human relationships to each other and nature, responses to change, and our capacity to dream for and enact more just and beautiful futures.

The emergent strategy core principles brown illuminates in Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds and Holding Change: The Way of Emergent Strategy Facilitation and Mediation, published by AK Press, are summarized as follows:

• Change is constant. Be like water.
• Small is good, small is all. The large is a reflection of the small.
• Less prep, more presence.
• What you pay attention to grows.
• There is a conversation in the room that only these people in this moment can have. Find it. 
• Move at the speed of trust: focus on critical connection more than critical mass.
• Trust the people. If you trust them, they become trustworthy.
• Never a failure, always a lesson.
• There is always enough time for the right work.

The Michigan Library Association Annual Conference is excited to announce the 2024 Small and Strategic Pre-Conference to be hosted ahead of the 2024 MLA Annual Conference. This day of programming is geared specifically toward frontline library staff from Michigan’s small and rural libraries, providing an opportunity for these dedicated library workers to network, learn, and discuss the concerns and needs specific to small libraries.

Small and rural libraries are some of the more important and nimble organizations that exist in our state, and they face unique challenges. The Michigan Library Association invites proposals for breakout sessions related to this specific audience at the Small and Strategic Pre-Conference to be presented in person, on Oct. 15, 2024, at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. Breakouts are 45 minutes in length.

Breakout tracks will focus on Technology, Programming, and Stewardship.

We are looking for proposals that elevate the ideas of intellectual freedom, equity, and collaboration, with a focus on digital literacy, de-escalation, underutilized resources, capital improvements, making a difference on a limited budget, passive programming, and more. Share the joys and wins of what our small and rural libraries can accomplish!

This invitation extends to all library professionals and partners - from first-time to experienced presenters, as well as professional speakers and subject matter experts.

In the midst of the recent national and global upheavals, the ACRL/NY 2024 Symposium will explore the core values of library workers and libraries, and examine how those values manifest in the day-to-day work that supports our library communities.  ACRL’s strategic plan and ALA’s Core Values of access, equity, intellectual freedom and privacy, public good, and sustainability can inform this conversation.  In 2000, the first edition of Michael Gorman’s Our Enduring Values: Librarianship in the 21st Century was published.  Later, in 2015, Gorman published a subsequent edition titled Our Enduring Values Revisited: Librarianship in an Ever-Changing World.  Across the two editions, Gorman identifies stewardship, service, intellectual freedom, rationalism, literacy & learning, equity of access to recorded knowledge & information, privacy, and democracy as foundational to library work.  In this context, we invite you to engage with these values.  How do we approach competing/conflicting understandings of libraries and these corresponding values?  Is it possible, or desirable, for us to agree at all on a set of common values? If so, what would they be? Are there additional values that we need to consider as we welcome and support our community? How do we apply our values to our daily work? 

The ACRL/NY 2024 Symposium Planning Committee invites you to submit a proposal for an enlightening and engaging presentation, lightning talk, panel, or poster to be considered for our 2024 Symposium. Multiple proposals will be considered.

• Accepted proposals will be notified by August 28, 2024.
• All presentations must be done in person on December 6, 2024.  Presenters pay the cost to attend, plus fund their own travel and housing.

The event will take place at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus on Friday December 6, 2024 from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Library Leadership and Management, an ALA Core publication and a double-blind, peer-reviewed journal, is soliciting submissions for both peer-reviewed and editor-reviewed featured articles for our special issue on middle management. Topics of interest to middle management issues in libraries may include, but are not limited to:

• Managing up and down the organization 
• Managing conflict 
• Managing budgets and/or resource allocation issues
• Empowering others and/or mentoring
• Training and support for middle managers
• Practicing/Modeling self-care and/or dealing with stress
• Role identity within the organization
• Balancing the demands of leadership and followership simultaneously
• Motivating others and dealing with issues of morale 
• Team-based organizational management 
• Informal management roles and leading through influence.

We strongly encourage proposals from individuals of all ethnicities, races, countries of origin, gender identities and expressions, ages, abilities, religions, sexual orientations, economic backgrounds, scholarly and professional backgrounds and experiences, types and sizes of institutions, and other differences. We are committed to amplifying and highlighting lived experiences from these different perspectives as they relate to leadership and management.

Accepted articles are anticipated to be published in the final Library Leadership and Management issue for 2024. Expressions of interest for this special issue are due May 31 via the proposal form. Once approved for the issue, completed articles will be due to the guest editors August 31, 2024.

The Michigan Library Association invites proposals for breakout sessions at the 2024 MLA Annual Conference to be presented in person, Oct. 16-18, 2023, at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Acme, Michigan on the outskirts of Traverse City. Call for Conference Reports - Serials Review - Serials Spoken Here Column

The Serials Spoken Here column in Serials Review is seeking conference reports for several spring conferences. If you attended the UKSG 47^th Annual Conference in April or are attending ELUNA or the Acquisitions Institute in May or NASIG in June, submitting a report is an excellent way to inform colleagues who are not able to attend.  The reports are only 750 words or less and are a good opportunity to meet a writing goal to add to your resume/CV.

CFP: NISO Plus 2024 Global/Online - Virtual Conference September 17-18, 2024 - National Information Standards Organization (NISO)

What are the top priorities and concerns facing your organization? What are the biggest opportunities or risks, and how should the information community address them?

If you have ideas to share, then we encourage you to submit a proposal for the 2024 NISO Plus Global/Online conference, to be held virtually September 17–18, 2024. It’s a great opportunity to meet and collaborate with professionals from across the information community and around the world to address the most pressing issues in scholarly communications. And as with any NISO Plus conference, ideas emerging from the meeting will help to shape discussions about future NISO standards and projects. 

We welcome proposals from everyone across the information community—those working for libraries, publishers, scholarly infrastructure and tech providers, government agencies, and more—no matter your title or career level. Ideas from professionals outside North America are most welcome, as are proposals and presentations in languages other than English (we will provide translation and transcription services). 

Broad topics of interest include (but aren't limited to) the following: 

• Archiving and preservation

• Global issues

• Information quality and ethics

• Research integrity

• Metadata

• Metrics

• Open scholarship and open access

• Identity, access, and privacy

• Research infrastructure

• Sustainability

• Peer review

• Emerging technologies (eg,  AI and machine learning)

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve and support diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) in the information community, we strongly encourage proposals that reflect a variety of perspectives—geographical, organizational, functional, etc.—and that acknowledge and address DEIA challenges and opportunities. We therefore recommend that your proposal includes either confirmed speakers or examples of who you plan to invite to speak. 

Please note that all sessions will comprise a live screening of prerecorded presentations (approximately 45 minutes), followed by a live online audience discussion period (30-45 minutes). Presentations will be recorded in August 2024. 

Please submit your proposal by Wednesday, May 29. All submissions will be reviewed by the NISO Plus 2024 Planning Committee, and we will inform everyone of their decisions by June 21
