1. Women & Poetry: Tips on Writing, Publishing and Teaching from American Women Poets
Foreword by Robin Merrill, Maine Poets Society President 2006-2007. M.F.A.
Stonecoast. With hundreds of poems published, some from her chapbook Laundry &
Stories (Moon Pie Press) were featured on Garrison Keillor's “Writers'
Almanac.” http://www.robinmerrill.com
Afterword by the editors of Iris Magazine, an award-winning publication of 27
years celebrating and empowering young women through provocative articles,
essays, and fiction pieces that are uplifting, inclusive, and literate.
http://womenscenter.virginia.edu/coreprograms/iris.html
Markets for women, why women write, time management, using life experience,
women's magazines, critique groups, networking, blogs, unique issues women must
overcome, lesbian and bisexual writing, formal education, queries and
proposals, conference participation, family scheduling, feminist writing,
self-publishing, teaching tips, are just a few areas women poets are
interested.
Practical, concise, how-to articles with bullets/headings have proven the most
helpful. Please avoid writing about “me” and concentrate on what will most
help the reader. A question and answer format for interviews may be used.
2. Milestones for American Women: Our Defining Passages
Foreword by Carolyn Lesser, Webster University, St. Louis, MO, nonfiction
writing faculty; natural science children's books published by Harcourt, Alfred
A. Knopf; essayist, poet, photographer, keynote speaker, artist.
Afterword by Dr. Loriene Roy, 2007-2008 President of the American Library
Association. Professor, University of Texas at Austin, founder of "If I Can
Read, I Can Do Anything," a national reading club for Native American children.
Please consider sharing the important milestones, life changing events,
transitions in your life--material that would broadly fit the “Women's
Studies” genre that is highly readable, moving and relatable. There are the
passages that occur to us (for example, losing a loved one, having to relocate)
and then the passages we choose (such as getting a degree in mid-life, adopting
a child). Please focus on those pivotal moments and why they were milestones
for you.
This book celebrates our passages as women, from one moment into another, from
one door to the next. Often it is after the navigation, that in reflection, we
see that some of the most difficult are the ones we have learned the most and
have had lasting effects as well on those around us.
Guidelines for Women and Poetry and/or Milestones for American Women:

proposed topics must be accompanied by a 65-70 word bio with your present

CFP: Literary Education and Digital Learning: Methods and Technologies for Humanities Studies
Proposal Submission Deadline: 05/30/2008
Full Chapters Due: 10/31/2008
A book edited by Willie van Peer, University of Munich, Germany
Sonia Zyngier, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Vander Viana, Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Introduction
We live at a time of enormous realignments in the use of media. Each day
more information can be retrieved from the Internet. The world is not one of
knowing how to access and manage information rather than storing and
processing it. In the area of literature, ever more information on literary
production is being disseminated and retrieved in electronic form. This has
considerable consequences for the form and use of such information. It also
has consequences for learning and research environments at educational
institutions. Today’s popularization of modern technologies has allowed
scholars in the Humanities, including literature specialists, to access an
array of novel opportunities in the digital medium, which have brought about
an equal number of challenges and questions. In spite of the vast amount of
information now at hand, very little has been provided for the advance of
literary education.
Objective of the book
This volume aims at providing a deep probe into the most relevant issues in
literary education and digital learning. The chapters will be organized into
two categories: research and education. The first group will collect studies
investigating the impact of technologies in literary research. Its main aim
is to understand how computers and other new technologies may help scholars
investigate literary works in novel ways, thus bringing new perspectives to
the area. The second group will look into the potential of applying distance
learning methods/concepts/environments to the field of literature. In other
words, it will collect contributions on how these resources may be used by
scholars and students either inside or outside regular classrooms, provided
that these classroom applications are not accounts of experience but based
on research. In sum, the volume will offer a survey of how digital literary
education has developed, where it stands now, how research in this area has
progressed, and what the prospects are for the future.
Target audience
This volume will be of interest to those interested in digital
learning/teaching and/or literature, especially in the university context.
This book will also interest literature professionals who would like to see
how digital learning works in practice. In addition, the book will be highly
valuable to those researchers in the field interested in keeping abreast
with current developments in the confluence of their fields of expertise and
technological settings.
Recommended topics
The topics to be covered in Parts I (Research) and II (Education) should
encompass literature and one of the following aspects (the list below is not
comprehensive, other topics may be welcomed, and especially those in which
authors are considered specialists):
*Applications in Distance Learning
*Authoring Tools
*Collaborative Learning
*Corpus-based Research
*Empirical Research on Digital Learning/Teaching
*Future Challenges
*Learning Technologies
*Methods in Distance Education Teaching
*Online Education Tools and Technologies
*Online Learning
*Shortcomings of Distance Learning Applications and Technologies
*Web-Based Course Authoring Tools
Submission procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before May 30,
2008, a 2-4 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and
concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will
be notified by July 31, 2008 about the status of their proposals and sent
chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by October
31, 2008. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review
basis. This book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea
Group Inc.), publisher of the “Information Science Reference” (formerly Idea
Group Reference) and “Medical Information Science Reference” imprints. For
additional information regarding the publisher, please visit

Call for papers
The value and volume of digital information increases year on year. Our scientific, cultural, and social heritage becomes more digital and the need to ensure that it can be effectively preserved becomes more urgent. This problem is not confined within national boundaries and is not specific to any discipline. We must work together to solve the challenges posed by this historic change. Whilst easily envisaged, collaborative working across national boundaries requires commitment, planning and co-ordination, and the theme of this year’s conference is designed to focus minds on how that can be achieved.
There are, in addition, further areas where the community needs to consider the value of a joined up approach. Stronger links can be forged between libraries and archives or between those practising scientific data curation and those involved with preserving arts and humanities information or learning materials. We need to strengthen the ties between theory and practice in digital preservation. It should be possible to show that preservation practice is underpinned by theory and can deliver benefits to stakeholder communities.
iPRES is a series of international conferences that seeks to address issues relating to digital preservation by bringing together experts and practitioners across the spectrum of digital preservation disciplines. We invite you to submit papers and presentations that present substantial new results, contribute to the conceptual foundations of digital preservation, or show novel applications of existing work. Empirical evidence demonstrating what works – and what doesn’t – is also welcome.

CFP: THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE BOOK
The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, USA
25-27 October 2008
http://www.Book-Conference.com
In the context of today's rapid developments in information technologies, the book is indeed an old medium of expression. Do the new media (the internet, multimedia texts and new delivery formats) represent a threat or an opportunity? What is the book's future as a creature of and conduit for human creativity?
This Conference will address the provocative suggestion that, rather than being eclipsed by the new media, the book will thrive as a cultural and commercial artifact. More than this, the information architecture of the book, embodying as it does thousands of years' experience with recorded knowledge, may well prove critical to the success of the new media.
As well as impressive line-up of international main speakers, the Conference will also include numerous paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by practitioners, teachers and researchers. We would particularly like to invite you to respond to the Conference Call-for-Papers. Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in the fully refereed International Journal of the Book. If you are unable to attend the Conference in person,
virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication in this fully refereed academic Journal, as well as access to the electronic version of the Conference proceedings.
Proposals are reviewed within four weeks of submission. Full details of the Conference, including an online proposal submission form, are to be found at the Conference website - http://www.Book-Conference.com
We look forward to receiving your proposals and hope you will be able to join us
in Washington, DC in October.
Yours Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Peters

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group (ALA Annual)
Name: ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group
Event: Annual discussion and business meeting
Date: Sunday, June 29, 2008
Time: 8:00-10:00 (business meeting from approx. 9:15-10:00)
Place: Disneyland Hotel, North Exhibit Hall, Meeting Room B
The summer meeting of the Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group at ALA Annual will consist of a discussion followed by a business meeting. The topic of the discussion is “IT Support in Cataloging Departments.”
In March of this year, Erin Stalberg from NCSU posed some questions on the metadatalibrarians list about the existence of organizational models which combine both metadata competencies and MARC competencies. The questions elicited few answers and much interest. We would like to devote our meeting time to an open discussion of issues such as technical competencies, metadata competencies, workflows which accommodate both Marc and other metadata schemas, and ways in which these skillsets can be brought into our departments and have them support all of our workflows.
Please contact me if you are interested in helping lead this discussion. I would like to have 2 or 3 people who can draw out questions from the audience and then help facilitate a discussion around them. This is not a formal presentation, rather a forum for exploring the ways in which technological skills and cataloging skills may be combined in an organizational structure.
If you have related questions which you would like addressed during the discussion, please send them along by replying directly to me. I will summarize for the lists.
Thanks.

CFP: 3rd Workshop on "Foundations of Digital Libraries"
Location: Aarhus, Denmark, September 18, 2008
URL: http://www.delos.info/DLFoundations2008
Sponsored by the DELOS Association in conjunction with the 12th ECDL Conference
Workshop Objectives
-------------------
Since its conception, the Digital Library field has been a very broad and heterogeneous research arena, attracting practitioners and researchers from a large number of disciplines. Despite the plethora of diversely motivated models, systems, and results that have been developed, no agreement exists yet on the foundations characterizing and governing Digital Libraries. Nowadays the community is well aware of the problems generated by such lack of a universally accepted unifying framework; it is urgent that the current situation is reversed so that progress in the field can be accelerated.
The recent release of the Reference Model for Digital Libraries (http://www.delos.info/ReferenceModel) by the DELOS Network of Excellence on Digital Libraries (http://www.delos.info) represents a first step towards establishing such a unified framework. In particular, the “DELOS Reference Model” identifies the basic concepts and relationships characterizing the area and allows for further additions, expansions, and specializations as the field evolves.
After JCDL’07 and ECDL’07, this third edition of the Workshop on “Foundations of Digital Libraries” intends to serve as a vehicle for consolidating and expanding the DELOS Reference Model as well for exploring other fundamental aspects of Digital Libraries through contributions brought by the participants in the workshop. Its ultimate goal is to stimulate a process that can lead to a comprehensive and universally accepted model, influencing future activities and development of Digital Library systems.
To achieve its goals, the workshop will focus on modeling the main concepts characterizing the Digital Library universe: Content, User, Functionality, Policy, Quality and Architecture. For each one of these aspects, papers are solicited that outline modeling challenges and propose appropriate solutions.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- (Semi-)Formal Models for Digital Libraries
- Theoretical Foundations of Digital Libraries
- Models for Content, User, Functionality, Policy and Quality
- Reference Architectures for Digital Library Systems
- Digital Library Management Systems
- Evaluation of current approaches in modeling Digital Libraries
- Digital Library Interoperability Models and Methodologies
- Preservation Models and Methodologies
- Concrete exploitations and implementations of Digital Library models
Paper Submission and Publication
--------------------------------
Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers. Submitted manuscripts will be limited to 8 pages, following the guidelines for the LNCS format provided by Springer (http://www.springer.com/east/home/computer/lncs?SGWID=5-164-7-72376-0&teaserId=45515&CENTER_ID=73062). Preferred formats are PDF or Microsoft Word. Papers should be submitted via email to DLFoundations2008@isti.cnr.it. Papers submitted to the workshop will undergo a peer-review process. Accepted papers will be published as a volume in the DELOS workshop proceedings series, which will also be made available in the DELOS digital library. For every accepted paper, at least one author is required to attend the workshop and present the paper. Depending upon the number and quality of the submissions, efforts to coordinate follow-on publications may be made, involving journal publication of extended versions of some of the accepted papers.
