CFP: Journal of Web Librarianship Issue on Library Intranets

CFP: Journal of Web Librarianship Issue on Library Intranets

The Journal of Web Librarianship is pleased to announce an upcoming special issue, "Library Intranets 2.0." Manuscript proposals are now being accepted!

Web 2.0 tools have dramatically increased opportunities for communication and collaboration in all areas of our online lives. Library literature abounds with accounts of how libraries are successfully using these tools to connect with users, but how are librarians and library staff leveraging 2.0 technologies to improve internal communication? This special peer-reviewed issue of the Journal of Web Librarianship focuses on use of 2.0 tools, technologies, and philosophies for creating organizational synergy via Web 2.0 intranets in all kinds of libraries.

Nina McHale, Assistant Professor and Web Librarian at the University of Colorado Denver, will be guest editing this special issue. She has experience in reference and systems, and prior to coming to Auraria Library, she held academic positions at Howard Community College (Columbia, Maryland) and Georgetown University. Her research interests include Web and Library 2.0, usability testing, user-centered design, and federated searching. She holds a joint MA/MSLS in English and library science from The Catholic University of America.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

-identifying/creating best practices for internal information sharing (formats, workflow, access control, etc.)
-2.0 tools for improving internal communication
-use of open source software, i.e., Drupal, MediaWiki, for library intranets
-use of proprietary products, i.e., Microsoft SharePoint
-migrating intranets, managing content
-failed intranets: lessons learned
-2.0 buy-in and staff training
-spanning physical distances: connecting consortium members, branches, etc.

Query letters and preliminary proposals are welcome if potential authors would like to discuss their ideas with the editors. Please submit queries and manuscripts to guest editor Nina McHale at jwl.special@gmail.com. Please refer to the JWL web site, http://www.lib.jmu.edu/org/jwl for Instructions for Authors.

CFP: ALCTS Catalog Form and Function Interest Group (ALA Annual, Chicago, Ill.)

CFP: ALCTS Catalog Form & Function Interest Group (ALA Annual, Chicago, Ill.)
11 July 2009, 10:30-12:00 AM
Hilton Continental C
---------------------------

The ALCTS Catalog Form & Function IG will be meeting in its usual high-impact, high-conflict time slot at ALA Annual this year, this time at the Chicago Hilton, the main conference hotel. Our topic this summer will be *Accentuating the "e-"*, and we are currently looking for presenters for that session. Presentations should be approximately 15 minutes in length with 10 minutes for follow-up questions.

*Accentuating the "e-"*: Libraries are increasingly looking for ways to draw attention to their growing local and consortial investments in e-resources by flagging these titles in the catalog, adding URLs to print and e-versions, adding search filters or facets for "Online", "Internet", "e-book", and "e-journal" offerings, creating external lists, RSS feeds, and so on. We will look at some of these methods and see if they are really serving the need they were intended to serve.

A separate call will be made within CFFIG, seeking nominations for the office of Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect. At the conclusion of Annual, the role of Chair is to pass to Richard R. Guajardo of the University of Houston. Congratulations Richard!

Charley Pennell
Chair, CFFIG

ALCTS CCS Electronic Resources Interest Group
ALA Annual Conference Chicago

In a world where funding is decreasing and demand is increasing, libraries and librarians are looking for ways to provide access to content without submitting their bottom line to costly and sometimes little-used online journal subscriptions.

The ALCTS CCS Electronic Resources Interest Group invites proposals for its panel discussion at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, on Saturday, July 11, 2009, from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

The discussion will center on the experiences of libraries and electronic resources librarians as they implement and manage transactional access models at their institutions. The panelists will
discuss why transactional access was right for their institution, the driving forces behind their decisions, the implementation process, technical implementation and management of the access, and the outcomes of their endeavors. The panelist presentations will be followed with a question and answer session, as well as an open forum for audience members to share their experience(s) with the session participants.

Please send abstracts of presentations to ERIG co-chairs, Jennifer Lang and Amira Aaron , by Friday, May 22, 2009.

CFP: IFLA Serials and Other Continuing Resources Section Division of Collections and Services

CFP: IFLA Serials and Other Continuing Resources Section Division of Collections and Services 75th World Library and Information Congress, Milan, Italy, 23-27 August 2009

Session theme:
Serials in the 21st century: new concepts, new challenges

The IFLA Serials and Other Continuing Resources Section (SOCRS) invites librarians and other interested parties to submit proposals for papers for the 2-hour open session in Milan.

Electronic formats have altered traditional ways of acquiring, cataloging and managing library materials. The lines are blurring between e-books, e-journals, and article databases. The division of functions in Acquisitions, Cataloging and Collection Development, as well as Public Services, which have until now been based on the types of material (continuing resources vs. monographs), are becoming less clear. Almost all e-resources have a seriality aspect. Are e-books the new continuing resource?

If the work of managing and servicing e-resources is being done in serials units (whether Acquisitions or Cataloging), then who handles “new” serials such as e-books and where do they fit in? Should they be included in ERMs? What kind of training and communication is needed for efficient work with e-resources? How do libraries adapt to this paradigm shift?

We especially invite papers that address the following topics:

*Organizational models for work with e-resources. What works and what doesn’t?

*E-books from selection to access: some new approaches

*New challenges as new opportunities

Please send a detailed abstract in English (1 page or at least 300 words) of the proposed paper (which must not have been published elsewhere) and relevant biographical information of author(s)/presenter(s) by February 15th 2009 via e-mail to: Eva-Lisa Holm Granath, Secretary of SOCRS, e-mail: evaho@bibl.liu.se

The abstracts will be reviewed by members of the Serials and Other Continuing Resources Section´s Standing Committee. Successful proposals will be identified by March 8th 2009 Full papers will be due by May 1st 2009 to allow time for review of papers and preparation of translations. Papers should be no longer than 10-20 pages. 10-15 minutes will be allowed for a summary delivery of the paper during the Section's open session in Milan. We aim for a broader range coverage with slightly shorter presentations.

Please note that the expenses of attending the Milan conference will be the responsibility of the author(s)/presenter(s) of accepted papers, and at least one of the authors/presenters must be present for the program.

CFP: ALCTS CCS Catalog Management Discussion Group (ALA Midwinter, Denver)

CFP: ALCTS CCS Catalog Management Discussion Group (ALA Midwinter, Denver)

The ALCTS CCS Catalog Management Discussion Group invites proposals for presentations for our meeting at Midwinter in Denver. The group will be meeting on Saturday, January 24th, from 1:30-3:30. Our theme is Cataloging Born-Digital Materials.

We are particularly interested in local policies for cataloging printouts from PDF files and other internet sources. As more and more publications are released online instead of in print, many public service librarians find themselves "printing the web." How are catalogers providing access to these materials?

The charge of the Catalog Management Discussion Group is as follows: to discuss the various issues involved with cataloging, classification, and authority control after the initial cataloging has been performed. In this respect, catalog management is defined as the continuous upgrading and updating of a catalog, regardless of its format, be it card, microform, book or on-line. The group will provide a forum for exchanging information and discussing techniques, new developments, and problems in managing the bibliographic integrity of library catalogs.

Proposals are due by October 31, 2008.

CFP: World Digital Libraries: An International Journal

The Editor of World Digital Libraries: An International Journal (WDL) invites Papers for the December 2008 and June 2009 issue.

World Digital Libraries: An International Journal is a peer reviewed bi-annual journal on digital libraries. The first issue of this journal has just been published. Content can be found at http://bookstore.teriin.org/journal_inside.php?material_id=477&qty=1.

You are requested to subscribe the same or recommend to your library to subscribe. The second issue will be published in December 2008. The aim of the journal is to advance the theory and practice of acquisition, organization, management and dissemination of digital information on a sustainable basis. The journal will seek quality research papers that present original theoretical approaches as well as experimental case studies related to digital library development and maintenance. In doing so, the journal will keep readers abreast with the current developments in the field. The journal will include articles, reviews, current developments, and case studies dealing with:

-theoretical and methodological issues that relate to the interrelationships among electronic resources management, digital preservation, multiple access, multilinguality, copyright issues and security aspects;
-initiatives taken towards digitization through lucid case studies;
-current developments across the globe; and
-dialogues between the scientific community and society at large.

The journal will be having global coverage with local focus and would provide a platform for decision-makers, planners, consultants, library and information science professionals to share their experiences. It will also facilitate dialogue among the digital library communities.

Articles and reviews should examine concepts, analyses, new approaches, and techniques pertaining to this field. Case studies covering new initiatives, as well as procedural breakthroughs of important issues in the digital library field would be included. Book reviews will cover recent books in the field, reviewed by an independent reviewer.

All submissions will be peer-reviewed using the criteria of originality, accuracy, and quality of contribution in these fields. The journal will also provide an update on topical developments in the field; notes on important breakthroughs; information on forthcoming conferences, workshops, seminars and relevant events; and highlight activities of national and international importance in the field.

We would like to request all of you to submit paper for the same to dckar@teri.res.in address below.

CFP: The Journal of Library Metadata

CFP: The Journal of Library Metadata

The Journal of Library Metadata marks the growing importance of metadata in libraries. As libraries collect, produce, distribute, and publish more information than ever before, the metadata that describes these resources becomes more crucial for electronic resource management and discovery.

Institutional repositories are one of the main forces promoting the creation of many different metadata schemes, specialized controlled vocabularies, and new initiatives for data sharing and harvesting. An increasingly popular type of search called “faceted searching” is also reliant on enriched metadata.

The journal features both a peer-review section for research articles, and a non-peer review section for more practical, case study and best practice type articles. Included amongst the charter issue:

“Dublin Core Metadata Harvested Through OAI-PMH”

“You Need My Metadata: Demonstrating the Value of Library Cataloging”

“Cataloging Images in Millennium: A Central Repository for Faculty-Owned Images”

“From Hanging Files to Digital Collection: Growing A Controlled Vocabulary for Added Functionality in the Online World”

“The Peloponnesian War and the Future of Reference, Cataloging, and Scholarship in Research Libraries.”

The Journal of Library Metadata welcomes the submission of papers for consideration. Librarians are encouraged to contact the journal’s editor, Jeffrey Beall, for “Instructions for Authors” and deadlines for upcoming issues at: Jeffrey.beall@cudenver.edu.
