CALL FOR POSTER SESSION PROPOSALS (NASIG Annual Conference)
NASIG 23rd Annual Conference, June 5-8, 2008

The NASIG Program Planning Committee (PPC) invites poster session proposals for the 23rd Annual NASIG conference in Phoenix, Arizona, June 5-8, 2008. The theme of the conference is "Taking the Sting Out of Serials." Posters will be on display 9:30-5:30 on Friday, June 6th. Presenters should be available to discuss their topics during two break periods during this day.
Poster sessions provide an opportunity to share innovative ideas and new applications of technology. Sessions may present a report of a research study, an analysis of a practical problem-solving effort, or a description of an innovative program that may be of interest to the serials community. In keeping with NASIG's tradition of non-commercialism, poster sessions focusing solely on a commercial product will not be accepted. Additional guidelines for poster sessions are available:

Deadline for submission: Applications must be received by 5 p.m. EST on Thursday, March 15, 2008. Members of the PPC's Sub-committee on Poster Sessions will evaluate abstracts.

The 2008 NASIG Annual Conference will be held June 5-8, 2008, at Tapatio Cliffs Hilton Resort, Phoenix, Arizona. The conference program will feature ideas and issues that relate to electronic resources, scholarly communication, serials, and publishing. Conference presenters will include publishers, librarians, subscription agents, and library systems vendors.
In order to prepare a comprehensive program, the Program Planning Committee is issuing a second and final call for program proposals. PPC welcomes submissions related to the following topics:
* Vendor/library relationships -- vendor responses to customers' suggestions
* E-resources -- licensing and perpetual access, e-books, print on demand, ERMS
* Collection management -- serials preservation (binding/reformatting/offsite storage)
* Digital collections -- institutional repositories, digital preservation, metadata outside the library
* Cataloging -- rda and serials cataloging, MARC local holdings, government publications issues
(batchloading, minimal records)
* Technology -- federated searching, OPACs – display issues and alternatives from the traditional systems, information seeking behaviors in electronic environments,
practical applications for current and emerging technology
* Needs and practices of non-academic libraries
* Personnel management -- supervision, workflow, training and retraining in libraries
* Serials and e-resources in the reference department
* Career development in serials
The Program Planning Committee will review all submitted proposals for their content, timeliness, and relevance to the conference theme and reserves the right to combine,
blend, or refocus proposals to maximize their relevance and to avoid duplication. In addition, the Committee will treat all submissions as suggestions and guideposts. Time management issues and reimbursement guidelines generally limit each session to two speakers. Also note that proposals may be suggested as one type of session and/or format and ultimately be accepted as any one of the other types of sessions or formats; this decision is the purview of the Program Planning Committee. Vision and Strategy speakers are required to produce a written paper for the conference proceedings. ALL presentations must be original and not previously presented at other conferences.

The 2008 Program Planning Committee (PPC) invites proposals and/or program ideas for pre-conference, vision, strategy, and tactics sessions. The Program Planners are specifically
interested in hearing from publishers, vendors, librarians, and others about issues relating to scholarly communication, licensing, and publishing.
Please keep in mind the following:
* The Program Planning Committee will review all submitted proposals for their content, timeliness, and relevance to the conference theme and reserves the right to combine, blend, or
refocus proposals to maximize their relevance and to avoid duplication.
* The Program Planning Committee will treat all submissions as suggestions and guideposts.
* Time management issues and reimbursement guidelines generally limit each session to two speakers.

Sessions Types:
Pre-conferences are in-depth programs that focus on practical aspects of the work and skills we perform on a daily basis. In general, these programs are several hours in duration, have limited attendance, and may include hands-on training.
Vision sessions are offered at no-conflict times to allow all conference attendees to participate. These programs generally deal with the larger universe of ideas and issues that may influence the serials world.
Strategy sessions generally deal with all or, at least, several segments of the serials world including, but not limited to publishers, vendors, service providers, and librarians. These
sessions are 90 minutes; please allow 10 minutes for questions from the audience.
Tactics Sessions are designed to address day-to-day issues and generally deal with one or two practical aspects of the serials world. These sessions are 60 minutes; please allow 10
minutes for questions from the audience.

Introduction:
Twice each year representatives of CNI's member organizations gather for Task Force Meetings. The meetings are designed to explore new technologies, content, and applications; to further collaboration; to analyze technology policy issues; and to catalyze the development and deployment of new projects.
Project Briefings are the heart of every Task Force Meeting. These briefings address state-of-the-art developments and issues of interest to the membership, as outlined in each year's Program Plan. Interoperability and standards, developing and managing networked information content, and innovations in teaching and learning are topics that consistently engage CNI members' interests.
About the Briefings:
Project Briefings are one-hour breakouts that allow participants to interact informally about projects, initiatives, and ideas of their own choosing. The Briefings are usually attended by 25-75 people. Attendees include senior IT and library administrators, publishing executives, government officials, and others with a high level of interest in and understanding of networking information issues. The Briefings are intended to provide information about a project's goals, progress, and lessons learned, but they may also involve demonstrations. Issue-oriented briefings include presentation of background information on a "hot topic" and more time for general discussion with the audience. Each Briefing should include at least twenty minutes for general discussion.
Handouts:
CNI will distribute one-page (two-sided) handouts for briefings in the registration packets for the Task Force Meeting and these materials will also be made available on our Web site. Handouts are generally NOT PowerPoint presentations. You may provide your own handout (in Word or PDF format), or you may supply the URL of a Web site for your project, from which the CNI staff will create a one-page handout. The deadline for submitting handouts or Web sites is March 16, 2007.
