A poster session is a great opportunity to share an idea in progress or show other IUG members how your library did something well. We are interested in poster sessions on a variety of topics. If you need some ideas for what might be of interest to colleagues from other Innovative libraries, take a look at the Suggested Topics that have been compiled over the past few years and from the responses to the IUG 2008 meeting in Washington, D.C. You have the experience and ideas to share!! If you have an idea of your own and don't see it listed, please submit a proposal anyway.

Again, deadline for submitting Poster Session proposals is Friday, February 13, 2009. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the poster session proposal process.

The Program Committee and I look forward to getting all of your great proposals!

We are in the process of migrating all the conference forms and materials from previous and current conferences to a Conference Management System. The conference system is very much still *under construction* but we have the Program Proposal Form ready.

We welcome ALL feedback about the form. At the bottom of every Conference page there is a "Contact Us" link - webguru@innovativeusers.org. Use it for all questions, comments and
feedback.

If you would like to present a program or two, but do not know what might be of interest to colleagues from other Innovative libraries, take a look at the Suggested Topics Page that have been compiled over the past few years and from the responses to the IUG 2008 Conference survey in Washington, D.C. You may find that you have the experience and ideas to share.

Remember, we aim for a variety of programs - basic to advanced, every library type, how you use various Innovative modules, and how you use other programs in conjunction with Innovative software. The topics list is not meant to be exhaustive. Some topics have been duplicated (as appropriate) under separate categories for your convenience. If you have
an idea of your own and don't see it listed, please submit a proposal anyway. You may also be interested in coordinating a panel discussion, but don't have all of the presenters lined up. It's perfectly fine to have some TBA's at this stage. The Program Committee can work with you
to help identify potential co-presenters.

If you have presented or coordinated at past IUG programs, please consider resubmitting a proposal for this year. Many comments from recent IUG conferences attest to the fact that it is impossible to attend every program that our users would like to hear, so it is always appreciated in having another chance to see popular programs. There are also a large number of regional user group meetings taking place this fall that offer an excellent variety of program offerings. If you are presenting in one of the regional conferences, please consider repeating your program at the annual meeting, so many more colleagues can learn from your experiences.

Again, deadline for submitting program proposals is Monday, November 3, 2008. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the program proposal process.

The Program Committee and I look forward to getting all of your great proposals!

Looking to get published? Footnotes seeks contributions! (NMRT)

The NMRT Footnotes Committee is seeking contributions for our upcoming August issue.

We are particularly interested in finding writers to cover all the various NMRT events at Annual, but other article ideas are encouraged as well.

If you are going to the conference and plan on attending any of the many NMRT events - or other ALA events – consider writing an article for Footnotes. It’s a great way to share your experiences with others and get your name out there!

Please contact Holly Wilson (at hollychrome@yahoo.com) with the event you’d like to cover or your article idea before Friday June 20th. We also welcome submitted photography: upload your pictures to Flickr with the tag “nmrtannual08″!

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group (ALA Annual)

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group (ALA Annual)

Name: ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group
Event: Annual discussion and business meeting
Date: Sunday, June 29, 2008
Time: 8:00-10:00 (business meeting from approx. 9:15-10:00)
Place: Disneyland Hotel, North Exhibit Hall, Meeting Room B

The summer meeting of the Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group at ALA Annual will consist of a discussion followed by a business meeting. The topic of the discussion is “IT Support in Cataloging Departments.”

In March of this year, Erin Stalberg from NCSU posed some questions on the metadatalibrarians list about the existence of organizational models which combine both metadata competencies and MARC competencies. The questions elicited few answers and much interest. We would like to devote our meeting time to an open discussion of issues such as technical competencies, metadata competencies, workflows which accommodate both Marc and other metadata schemas, and ways in which these skillsets can be brought into our departments and have them support all of our workflows.

Please contact me if you are interested in helping lead this discussion. I would like to have 2 or 3 people who can draw out questions from the audience and then help facilitate a discussion around them. This is not a formal presentation, rather a forum for exploring the ways in which technological skills and cataloging skills may be combined in an organizational structure.

If you have related questions which you would like addressed during the discussion, please send them along by replying directly to me. I will summarize for the lists.

Thanks.

ALA information about poster sessions in general is available at:
http://www.lib.jmu.edu/org/ala/default.aspx

Basically, poster sessions are an opportunity to informally present graphics and text about work you have done or are doing.

Usually posters are 4' x 8' or smaller - and in this case, must be self-standing (this location will not be providing boards for display). If you supplement your poster with computer graphics or other technology, you will need to bring your own projection equipment, laptops, etc.

Members of the Joint ACRL CJCLS-CLS-DLS Program Committee will be evaluating submissions on an ongoing basis through March 30, 2008.

The program and poster session are co-sponsored by the College Libraries Section, Community & Junior College Libraries Section, and the Distance Learning Section of ACRL.

A panel of speakers will share different perspectives on how Library IT departments need to adapt and change to address new opportunities and roles within the library and their parent organization. A question and answer session encouraging audience

CFP: New Reference Research at 14th Reference Research Forum, 2008

The Research and Statistics Committee of the Reference Services Section of RUSA is sponsoring its Fourteenth Reference Research Forum, "New Reference Research," at the 2008 American Library Association Annual Conference, Anaheim, CA.

This is an opportunity to present and discuss your research project conducted in the broad area of reference services such as user behavior, electronic services, reference effectiveness, and organizational structure and personnel.

Both completed research and research in progress will be considered. All researchers, including reference practitioners from all types of libraries, library school faculty and students, and other interested individuals, are encouraged to submit a proposal.

The Committee employs a "blind" review process to select a maximum of three (3) projects for 25 minute presentations, followed by open discussion. The selected researchers are required to present their papers in person at the forum. Criteria for selection are:

.. Significance of the study for improving the quality of reference service;
.. Quality and creativity of the research design and methodologies;
.. Potential for research to fill a gap in reference knowledge or to build on previous studies;
.. Previously published research or research accepted for publication will not be accepted.

Please submit a one-page proposal by Monday, January 7, 2008. Notification of acceptance will be made by Friday, March 21, 2008. The submission must consist of no more than two pages. On the first page, please list your name(s), title (s), institutional affiliation(s), and address(es) (including your mailing address, fax number and email address).

The second page should NOT show your name or any personal information. Instead, it must include:

.. Title of the project;
.. Explicit statement of the research problem;
.. Description of the research design and methodologies used;
.. Brief discussion of the unique contribution, potential impact, and significance of the research.
