Call for Proposals, MLA Academic Libraries 2010
Save the date for "Academic Libraries 2010: Explore, Discover, Connect," the Michigan Library Association's first two-day event highlighting trends and issues in academic libraries. The event will be held May 6-7, 2010, at the Hotel Baronette in Novi, Michigan. The keynote speakers are Dr. Carol Tenopir, Professor, School of Information Sciences, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and author of the "Online Databases" column for Library Journal; and Lori A. Goetsch, current President of ACRL and Dean of Libraries and Professor at Kansas State University.
We invite proposals to present at "Academic Libraries 2010: Explore, Discover, Connect." The proposal application, including selection criteria and requirements, is available online at http://www.mla.lib.mi.us/node/1068. The deadline for submitting a program proposal is November 30, 2009.
This event will showcase state and national cutting-edge trends, identify Michigan's unique issues, and connect academic library staff to their peers and colleagues. The Academic Libraries 2010 Work Group seeks a variety of proposals that will address topics that reflect the range of professional responsibilities found in academic libraries and that introduce new ideas or solutions to the challenges currently facing academic libraries (including but not limited to public universities, private colleges, and community colleges) and job responsibilities (including but not limited to librarians, staff, and administrators).
The Academic Libraries 2010 Work Group is pleased to offer this unique opportunity! We look forward to receiving your proposals and seeing you at the event.

Call for Poster Sessions (Michigan Library Association Conference)
The 2009 MLA Conference will be held November 3- 6 in Lansing. Poster Sessions will be from 12 p.m.- 4 p.m. on November 4 and 5 in the Lansing Center Exhibit Hall. Poster sessions provide an opportunity for individual librarians or libraries to share graphic representations of current research, programs or creative solutions to library problems. Presenters are given a one hour time slot during the conference to present posters, answer questions, and give away handouts relating to the session. Accepted presenters will be notified by July 31, 2009

MLA’s 118th Annual Conference will be held in Lansing, November 3-6, 2009. The Conference Program Committee is accepting program proposals through (new date!!) February 27th. The forms and instructions for completion are available at www.mla.lib.mi.us/node/934.
This is your opportunity to highlight something you and your colleagues have done: Have you made a change at your library that is worth replicating in other libraries? Have you done some research that would be of interest to practicing librarians? Did you present a program, change a procedure, reorganized your staff or increase revenue in some unique way?
We are looking for proposals that speak to all areas of our profession. Think of topics you'd like to see addressed, and then decide to give that talk!

The Conference Program Subcommittee is seeking high quality programs that will help the Michigan library community think about the future of the field, the practices and plans that are helping us get there and the economic, social and technological realities of the environment in which we must thrive.

Do you have something interesting to show your colleagues? Or perhaps you solved a unique or sticky problem? If so, then a poster session is for you. All types of libraries and all librarians, staff members and Library Science students are invited to participate at the 2008 Michigan Library Association Annual Conference in Kalamazoo. Sessions for poster presentations will be located near the exhibit hall, which should generate great traffic to your presentation.
Guidelines for the poster session:
* Poster sessions can introduce unique collections or services, discuss a problem and the research, action, or methodology used to solve that problem, or outline findings of research or study.
* Displays should be visually appealing (charts, photographs, diagrams, graphics, illustrations, etc.) and should clearly state the purpose of the display. Displays should also be large enough to be seen from several feet distant.
* Presenters should also bring handouts or other supplementary materials (no duplication services will be provided) and a sign up sheet to record names and addresses of attendees who would like further information. An ample supply of business cards are also encouraged.
* A tack board panel measuring 4 x 6 feet mounted on a freestanding easel or tabletop will be provided.
* There will also be table space for participants to place handouts or other supplementary material.
* One author must be present at all times to answer questions from conference attendees.
* Displays must be set up 15 minutes prior to the assigned time and taken down within 15 minutes after the session. Once assigned, your time will not change

The Michigan Library Association puts out a bi-monthly newsletter called, "Michigan Libraries". In it, there is a featured column called "Tech Watch", which highlights new and innovative technology in the library setting.
You may already have written it--the overview of a new technology for your Board, the quick tips for your faculty or staff, the pros and cons of a technology solution for your committee, hidden gems for your students.
Topics in the past have included the use of Google tools for reference needs, hot business reference resources, a handy Firefox extension, and user testing of websites.
We want to hear from you! Possible new topics include: RFID projects, federated searching, Web 2.0 or just something new that your library is doing with technology.
AUDIENCE: the wide range of workers in libraries, trustees, and advocates
LENGTH: 500-800 words, pictures accepted
DUE DATES (pick one):
March/April 2008 issue, column due: March 10
May/June 2008 issue, column due: May 10
July/August 2008 issue, column due: July 10
