Statistics are ubiquitous. Quantitative data is needed and used in research projects, evidence-based management, and as part of any advocacy process in the library and information sector. It is also part of most LIS curricula at all levels. Yet many students graduate with little knowledge and less confidence about their statistical competences; practitioners resent the “number crunching” part of their work, and arguments made to funding bodies on the basis of statistics sometimes prove not to be as convincing as expected.

The Statistics and Evaluation Section and Section of Education and Training of IFLA will hold a joint session during the 79th IFLA World Information Congress, Singapore, 17-23 August 2013, dedicated to new ways of teaching, presenting and communicating quantitative methods and results.

We invite papers on the following aspects:
- Teaching statistics differently: empowering LIS students to use statistical methods with confidence and competence
- Motivating library practitioners and teaching colleagues to collect and use empirical evidence, and to integrate a culture of assessment in their library
- Presenting and communicating library data in convincing and accessible ways, e.g. by combining statistics and “storytelling”
- Innovative ways to use quantitative data for advocacy and showing the impact of libraries.

Submission guidelines

The session has a duration of 2 hrs and will comprise 4 presentations. Presentations should be no longer than 20 minutes with 10 minutes for questions from the audience. Full papers must be between 3000 and 6000 words in length. They must be original and not have been published elsewhere.

Proposals for papers should be in English and include:
- An abstract of no longer than 250 words, including illustrations if appropriate
- Name, institution and full address of the presenter (name, postal address, phone, fax, email) At least one presenter will have to be on site to deliver the presentation.
- A short biography of the presenter.

- February 6th, 2013: Submission deadline. Please indicate "IFLA Proposal Singapore 2013" on the subject line.
- March 8th, 2013: notification of successful applicants
- May 25th, 2013: submission of full written papers (between 3000 and 6000 words in length).

The Asia and Oceania Section's open session in Singapore focuses on how library services in the Asia and Oceania (A & O) region must change to meet the challenges of many possible futures in a fast-changing and uncertain world.

In keeping with the conference’s overall theme, ‘Future Libraries: Infinite Possibilities’, the Asia and Oceania Open Session will focus on the remarkably diverse social, economic and geographic contexts in which library and information services operate across our vast region.

Libraries in the A & O region are located in a hugely diverse area that includes tiny sparsely populated island nations in the world's biggest ocean as well as expansive heavily populated countries spreading across the world's largest continent. Some libraries are situated in the heart of wealthy highly developed countries, leaders in connectivity, while others are in isolated and deprived areas that epitomise the digital divide. While their contexts are extremely diverse, what these libraries have in common is the urgent need to confront fundamental challenges to their way of operating. They all must develop their vision of future services to meet changing needs. For all of them, the future is now.

We seek contributions that illustrate the multiple futures confronting libraries in Asia and Oceania, including papers that describe the contexts, the strategic planning and visions, as well as actual developments of facilities, services, and resources that are shaping the future.

The Library Services to Multicultural Populations Section and Education and Training Section invites proposals for papers to be presented at a two-hour session in the next IFLA General Conference on August 2013 in Singapore.

Theme: Indigenous knowledge and multiculturalism in LIS education and library training: infinite possibilities

This joint session focuses on the issues of diverse communities and the ways that LIS education and library training need to incorporate cultural competencies, knowledge and practices. While some countries have found success in educating library school students and library workers some areas of the world need help with advocating, developing and sustaining these initiatives. This session will further the awareness of the importance of LIS education in multicultural competencies, and indigenous knowledge paradigms and how these efforts can be extended effectively into in-house training programs for library professional and their staff.

The funds may be used at the discretion of the award recipients. Award recipient must be an ALA member or at least one member of a collaborative team must be an ALA member.

BOOK ABSTRACT:
With a focus on Canada, this collection will document the labour-related struggles and gains of academic librarians. It will provide historical and current perspectives regarding the unionization of academic librarians, an exploration of the major labour issues affecting academic librarians in both certified and non-certified union contexts, as well as case studies relating to the unionization of academic librarians at selected institutions. The volume will strive to include a broad representation of academic librarian labour activists and those who have rallied to the support of academic librarians in the workplace.

OBJECTIVE OF THE BOOK:
This edited collection will gather the common experiences of Canadian academic librarians and situate them in a national framework with respect to unionization. It will examine the issues that have led to the formal organization of academic librarians, the gains that have been achieved, and the ramifications of those gains. A limited number of chapters exploring relevant issues from a non-Canadian perspective are also being sought in order to provide insight and comparisons in a broader context.

POSSIBLE TOPICS:
The editors invite chapters that describe activities undertaken by academic librarians, unions, and related associations that further the goals of librarians in the academy from a labour perspective. Examples of topics that would be of particular interest to the editors include:
• Academic freedom cases involving U.S. academic librarians, for the purpose of comparing these to the Canadian setting;
• Librarians and governance on Canadian and / or U.S .campuses;
• Faculty or academic status of librarians in the U.S., including a comparison with Canada;
• Successful mobilization or political strategies for unionization or labour actions of academic librarians;
• Case studies of academic librarians asserting their collective rights in such a way that might provide inspiration or guidance for other groups;
• Labour action or the experience of strike within the academic library environment.
In particular, the editors would like to encourage chapters that explore the experiences of academic librarians from a labour perspective using a methodological framework as appropriate. Proposals that examine the issues from a theoretical framework are also welcome.

TARGET AUDIENCES:
The editors believe that this book will be of interest to academic librarians, labour historians, and those interested in academic labour or unionization of library workers.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Authors are invited to submit abstracts and proposals of 300-500 words to jdekker@uottawa.ca and mkandiuk@yorku.ca by January 15, 2013. Notifications will be sent by February 1, 2013. A draft manuscript ranging from 1,500-7,000 words will be due by June 1, 2013. Submitted manuscripts must not have been published previously or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. Following review, articles will be returned via e-mail for revision before final acceptance. All materials will be edited as necessary for clarity. All submissions should include at the beginning an abstract of no more than 150 words, highlighting the scope, methodology, and conclusions of the paper. Authors should follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th ed. (2010). We welcome contributions from scholars and practitioners alike. Reflecting the theme of the IFLA World Libraries and Information Congress 2013 in Singapore "Future Libraries: Infinite Possibilities" the Rare Book and Manuscript Section together with the Art Libraries Section of IFLA will be organizing a three-hour Open Session: Images, lost and found: innovative approaches to discovery and use of visual material found in rare books, manuscripts, and special collections.

Rare books, manuscripts, and special collections contain millions of images that remain largely 'hidden' to researchers because they are not catalogued individually. These include woodcuts, illuminations, emblems, drawings, sketches, paintings, and photographs, all of which are critical to a wide range of research in the humanities. In fact, many researchers focus solely on these images, and not on the texts that contain them. A similar problem exists with large image collections found in a library's special collections, because they are too massive to be catalogued individually. These, too, are difficult to find and use.

The papers may:

1. describe new discovery tools or methods
2. demonstrate innovative ways of managing large visual collections
3. highlight new areas of research that have resulted from analyzing and using images in innovative ways

Aims of the Session: The session should explore various innovative tools and methods designed to help researchers find and use images that are hidden in books and large cultural heritage collections.

Format: The Open Session will last for three hours. Speakers are restricted to 20 minutes. Afterwards there will be time for questions and comments from the audience. All seven official IFLA languages are admitted for the presentations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Russian and Spanish). Papers in English are preferred because no simultaneous translation is planned for this session.

• Author(s) of the paper.
• Abstract or summary of the paper (200-400 maximum words).

Proposals are now being accepted for presentations for the 2013 annual conference of the Ex Libris Bluegrass Users Group (eBUG). Presentations are being sought for all Ex Libris products, such as Primo, SFX, Voyager, etc.  We highly encourage the submission relating to public services, library instruction, technical services, and systems.

All topics should be related to Ex Libris products and presentations should last approximately 45 minutes. OSS:IDLP is a peer-reviewed journal.

We are currently planning the College and University Business Libraries (CUBL) Section Breakfast for the 2013 SLA Annual Conference in San Diego and are issuing this call for presenters.

This year's Breakfast theme will be “Strategic Partnerships in Academic Business Librarianship—Making Connections That Make Sense.”

Librarians are increasingly finding (or making) opportunities to work with new groups and audiences. Sometimes those groups expand our horizons and take our service offerings in new directions. Have you and/or your unit established a strategic relationship with an organization or group outside of the library, and beyond your normal outreach to business students and faculty?  Do you collaborate on business-related programming, collections, or services with administrative offices on campus, or public or private organizations off-campus, or other?  If so, please consider sharing your experiences with your colleagues at the CUBL Breakfast!

If you are interested in speaking for 15 minutes or so on this topic, please send me a brief description (1-2 paragraphs) on your proposed talk no later than Friday, January 25, 2013.   Presenters will be notified by February 22, 2013.  Presentations will be due in final form by June 3, 2013.

What is evidence-based practice? It is what you do naturally! Librarians often use evidence to inform what they do and how they deliver services and programs. Share with others how you have researched and collected the evidence to inform your decision-making. Submit an abstract!

Librarians are also conducting research and adding valuable evidence to the LIS body of knowledge, engaging in knowledge transfer with their own research experiences.

The 7^th International Evidence Based Library and Information Practice conference is the place to come and participate in the EBLIP conversation.

The International Program Committee for EBLIP7 invites you to submit abstracts for papers and posters for the conference to be held at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada from July 15 - 18, 2013.

-Christine Pawley - Former director of the School of Library and Information Studies, University of Wisconsin - Madison and historian of print culture in America.
-Jessa Lingel - Doctoral student at Rutgers and author of "Occupy Wall Street and the myth of the technological death of the library."

Libraries, Information, and the Right to the City

In recent years movements of scholars and activists have advanced a concept known as “the right to the city.” As the noted geographer David Harvey puts it “the right to the city is far more than the individual liberty to access urban resources: it is a right to change ourselves by changing the city.” Situated at the heart of a global metropolis the Library Association of the City University of New York http://lacuny.org/ is in an excellent position to initiate this dialogue.

The 2013 LACUNY Institute committee welcomes proposals that examine how library and information professionals engage in such social transformations. The majority of the world’s population now resides in urban areas making questions surrounding the city central to understanding the shape of the 21st century. The goal of the 2013 institute is to create a dialogue about how library and information professionals can (or should) move beyond being guarantors of access and become engaged in communities’ production of knowledge. We consider “the city” to be the public sphere broadly defined (i.e., proposals that examine these issues in small communities are welcome). The massive technological transformations of recent years have changed the nature of both libraries and the public sphere. At the 2013 LACUNY Institute we would like to explore the roles of libraries and information in the polis of the future.

Here are few examples of subjects that would be considered appropriate:
  *   Librarians and social movements
  *   Libraries and public services
  *   The ethics of representation
  *    Services to traditionally marginalized groups
  *    Critical information literacy
  *    The ethics of user generated content
  *    The ethics of neutrality
  *     Libraries and civic engagement
  *   Open access and the public's right to information
We look forward to your participation in the spring of 2013!

Submission of proposals for papers should include:
  *   name(s) of presenter(s)
  *   title(s)
  *   affiliation(s)

  *   abstracts of 300-500 words.
Presentations will be 20 minutes with time allocated for questions and discussion.

The peer-reviewed Journal of Interlibrary Loan, Document Delivery & Electronic Reserve provides a forum for the presentation of pure and applied research results, discussion of best practices and review of literature regarding all aspects of library resource sharing, document delivery and reserves services. In addition to traditional resource sharing topics of interlibrary loan and electronic reserves, the journal encourages submission of scholarly papers regarding:

CFP: Northern CA Technical Processes Group 2013 Program

The Northern California Technical Processes Group is seeking speakers for its 76th annual program to be held in Spring 2013 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our topic this year is "Libraries Without Walls Revisited". When the
phrase "libraries without walls" was first coined in the 1970s, everyone read books the old-fashioned way, while iPads and the Cloud were the stuff of science fiction. We ask how technology has changed our profession, made
our jobs easier, created new challenges for us, and how it ultimately will transform the very idea of libraries and what librarians and professional staff do.

Some ideas that you might consider:

a) How are libraries transcending their traditional boundaries, either physical or theoretical?
b) How can collections services support librarians and professional staff in meeting user needs in environments beyond the library – whether by facilitating embedded librarianship, getting library metadata "in the flow"
where users anticipate and need it, or by engaging with patrons to describe, build, and re-contextualize collections?
c) How are librarians and professional staff collaborating with other institutions/staff to support the concept and vision of "libraries without walls"?

Please submit your proposals (no longer than 250 words) to info@nctpg.org no later than December 31, 2012, at which time we will choose three speakers.

Call for Papers:  Newspapers to the People

The IFLA Newspapers/Genealogy and Local History (GENLOC) Sections are pleased to announce a Call for Papers for a two-day Pre-conference Satellite Meeting to be held in Singapore from 14th - 15th August 2013.

This Pre-conference Satellite Meeting is jointly organised by the National Library of Singapore, the IFLA Newspapers Section, and the IFLA Genealogy and Local History Section.

We would like to invite you to submit a proposal relating to the title Newspapers to the People to present at this Pre-conference. The intention of this Satellite Meeting is to interest not only IFLA members, but also newspaper
publishers, academics, researchers, local studies experts, historians.

As well as distinguished keynote speakers, the Pre-Conference Satellite Meeting will include sponsor presentations and visits to the Malay Heritage Centre site and the Roots Revealed exhibition.

The main Pre-Conference theme:  Newspapers to the people 
Sub-themes:  Papers chosen for presentation should address, but are not limited to:
- Case studies of information institutions (libraries, archives, etc.) that foster community research into family history or local heritage
- Case studies in the digitisation and preservation of cultural heritage
- Latest initiatives and technologies in newspaper e-preservation and access
- Reporting the news in the digital and social media age: trends and how these impact the information industry.
- Social media and crowdsourcing vis-à-vis historical newspaper collections
- Tracing family history or local heritage through newspaper archives
- Issues of E-Legal Deposit: online news and newspapers\
- Other proposals relevant to the main Pre-Conference theme will also be considered.

Submission Guidelines:
-Proposal abstracts should be submitted in English as an MS file.
-Proposal abstracts for the IFLA Newspapers/GENLOC Pre-Conference Satellite
-Meeting must be submitted by 31st January 2013, must be in English and should clearly include:
**Title of proposed presentation
**Abstract of proposed paper (no more than 300 words)
**Name(s) of presenter(s) plus position and/or title
**Employer/affiliated institution
**Contact information including  email address, telephone number
**Short biographical statement of presenter(s)
**Language of presentation

25 minutes will be allowed for the delivery of the paper
The Sections will have the accepted papers translated into at least three languages and these papers will be made available on a Conference website Please note that the Programme Committee regrets that it has no funding to assist prospective authors and the submission of an abstract must be on the understanding that the costs of attending the Pre-conference, including registration, travel, accommodation and other expenses, are the responsibility of the presenters of the accepted papers, or their institutions.
