Innovative Practices: Developing Sustainable Programs, Mobilizing Support for Your Library!

The IRRT Preconference Committee invites proposals for presentations from librarians and administrators from libraries of all sectors. Based on this year’s theme, the IRRT Preconference Committee is interested in proposals that showcase creative strategies and practices in developing sustainable partnerships with local organizations. Of particular interest for this year’s preconference, but not limited to, are case studies of international collaborations between U.S. and international libraries that represent innovative practices in developing program proposals, mobilizing community support, and raising funds. Among the topics that may be addressed in the presentation proposals are:
-providing multi-lingual interfaces to services
-incorporating new forms of content into the collection
-employing Web 2.0 tools to mash-up with traditional library services
-promoting free and equal access to information for all members of the community
-using open source software for new services
-employing sustainable information technologies for services in developing nations

In the proposal, please provide:
1. Title of proposed presentation
2. Abstract of the presentation (no more than one page or 300 words)

The IRRT Preconference will be held on Friday, June 22, 2012 in conjunction with the ALA Annual Conference (June 21– 26 2012) in Anaheim, CA. It will be a half-day program from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm that consists of 3 to 4 panel presentations and a one-hour interactive workshop on advocacy and fundraising.

CFP: Library Communications Journal - a new journal for library communications professionals

As part of the formation of The Association of Library Communications and Outreach Professionals (ALCOP) which is scheduled to be announced on or before February 15th, a new online journal focused on library communications has been established, and we are now seeking articles for the first issue.

Library Communications Journal will be an online quarterly publication available to ALCOP members and will feature practical articles on a diverse range of issues of concern to library communications professionals today. At the helm of the new journal will be Ms. Jordan Strohl, an experienced journalist who has been a contributor to many professional journals focused on communications. Jordan will serve as the Managing Editor and Assistant to the Publisher.

We are seeking articles on such topics as:

•        using social media to promote libraries
•        ideas for outreach to underserved populations
•        innovative program ideas and how to promote them
•        how to motivate the library staff
•        using technology in promoting the library
•        how to plan a great special event
•        best practices for working with the media
•        fostering student engagement with the academic library

     ... and many other issues relevant to you and how you do your job

We also seek all kinds of “how to” articles as well as book reviews on new texts focusing on library marketing and public relations.

The journal will welcome articles directed at a general audience or specifically for practitioners serving public, academic, or special libraries.

We are seeking articles no more than 2,000 words in length and book reviews should not be more than 400 words. LCJ allows all authors to retain copyright privileges to their work.

Call for Papers for Practical Academic Librarianship: The International Journal of the SLA Academic Division

Practical Academic Librarianship (PAL) is a peer-reviewed, open access journal for all academic librarians and information professionals serving academic departments or affiliated institutions including centers, institutes, specialized collections, and special units within or related to academic units. Well-written manuscripts that are of interest to these communities will be considered, including: implementation of new initiatives and best practices; original and significant research findings with practical applications; analysis of issues and trends; descriptive narratives of successful and unsuccessful ventures; and examination of the role of libraries in meeting specialized client needs.

PAL publishes items as soon as they are ready by adding articles to the "current" volume's Table of Contents. The journal publishes two issues a year. The first issue runs January 1 - June 30 and the second issue runs July 1 - December 31. Our current issue can be accessed at https://journals.tdl.org/pal/index

The Journal publishes two categories of works:
• Peer reviewed research papers (original research): not more than 25 single-spaced pages
• Think pieces (intended to spur discussion, not blind peer-reviewed): 3-15 single-spaced pages

The "CALL FOR PAPERS" HAS BEGUN!

Have you been thinking of writing an article of interest to law librarians? The AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Committee has just the incentive to get started. The Committee is soliciting articles in three categories:

Open Division: for active and retired AALL members and law librarians with five or more years of professional experience;

New Member Division: for recent graduates and AALL members who have been in the profession for less than five years;

Short Form Division: for AALL members. Articles in this category will be shorter than a traditional scholarly article, and appropriate for publication in AALL Spectrum, a bar journal, chapter or SIS newsletter.

Student Division: for students in library, information management or law school. Participants in this division need not be members of AALL. To submit in this category, you must have been enrolled in law school, or in a library school, information management, or an equivalent program, either in the Fall 2011 or Spring 2012 semester.

Submissions in the Open, New Member and Short Divisions must be submitted by March 1, 2012. Articles in the Student Division must be received by May 15, 2012.

The winner in the Open, New Member, and Student Divisions will receive $650 and the Short Form Division winner will receive $300 generously provided by LexisNexis®, plus the opportunity to present the winning paper at a program during the 2012 AALL Annual Meeting in Boston! Winning papers in the Open, New Member and Student Divisions are also considered for publication in the Association’s prestigious Law Library Journal.

Description:

The AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers Committee promotes the scholarship of AALL members and of students through its annual "Call for Papers" competition. Papers, which may be submitted by active or retired AALL members, or by students in library, information management or law school, may address any subject relevant to law librarianship. Through the competition, the Committee seeks (1) to promote scholarship of interest to the profession of law librarianship; (2) to provide a creative outlet for law librarians and a forum for their scholarly activities; and (3) to recognize the scholarly efforts of established members, of new members, and of students who are considering a career as law librarians.

The recipients will be recognized during award ceremonies at the AALL Annual Meeting. Co-authors of winning papers will share the award. Winners also will be given the opportunity to present their papers in a program at the Annual Meeting of the Association. Papers in the Open, New and Student divisions will be forwarded to the Editor of the Law Library Journal for publication consideration.

Submissions

The deadline for submitting short papers is 15 February,2012

Papers should be in English and no more than 2000 wordsin length. The submission should also include:

* Author’s name, professional affiliation, postaladdress, and email address.

Short papers and presentations should representunpublished, original work. Submissionswill be reviewed by a selection committee of members of the Standing Committeeof the Classification and Indexing Section. Successful short papers will beidentified by March 31, 2012, and authors notified shortly thereafter.

Authors should be prepared to give presentations at theClassification and Indexing Section Open Session at the IFLA Conference, heldbetween August 12-16, 2012. The lengthof the presentations should be approximately 15 minutes with 5 minutes forquestions/discussion. The conference will be conducted in English and allpresentations will be required to be in English.

Successful short papers will be translated into theofficial languages of IFLA. IFLA has firstpublication rights to papers selected.

    Rapidly evolving technology and the current state of economic scarcity is creating a new environment in the fields of information science and substance abuse. Organizational and information "silos" of the past are no longer effective because they foster competition, complacency, redundancy, isolation and suspicion in an environment that requires collaboration, accessibility, efficiency, responsiveness and sustainability.

    How can we, as information scientists and professionals in substance abuse professionals and related fields, view this need for change as an opportunity instead of a crisis? How can we step out of our silos to break down barriers to communication, create reciprocal partnerships and find new and sustainable ways to present information to the diverse populations we serve?

Affiliates Showcase is a new program from the AffiliateRelations Committee (formerly Council of Regional Groups, CRG), a new divisioncommittee of ALCTS. We want to bring the fantastic and informativepresentations we see at our state and regional meetings to ALA Annual.

The Center for the Study of Information and Religion (CSIR) will host its Second Annual International Conference on Information and Religion at Kent State University on May 18 and 19, 2012.

This call for papers and posters seeks original contributions in all areas related to information and religion. The conference theme invites participants to share their work in a variety of areas in which scholars are exploring the intersections of religion and information. Topics that might be addressed include but are not limited to the following:

Preserving and making available religious texts and information objects associated with communities of faith;
Social uses and appropriations made of these texts and objects;
The information-seeking behavior of clergy;
The role of the sermon as an influential communication medium in society; case studies in the sermon preparation task;
Information in its application to local congregations as communities of practice;
Faith and many types of intelligence (e.g., emotional intelligence);
Dissemination of faith messages;
Intersections of interests in the study of information and religion, where different disciplines might find it worthwhile to collaborate in research.

Prospective participants are encouraged to submit abstracts that report on recent research and scholarship. Contributions to this call for papers and posters should not have been previously published. There are no restrictions on research methodology.

Colleagues from around the world are invited to submit an abstract for consideration for the Satellite Program sponsored by IFLA's Library Services to People with Special Needs (LSN) Section and Tallinn Central Library; Tallinn, Estonia.

In 1990 the American Library Association approved Policy #61, Library Services to the Poor. This policy was created based on the belief that it is crucial that libraries recognize their role in enabling poor people to articipate fully in a democratic society, by utilizing a wide variety of available resources and strategies.” The policy, overseen by ALA’s Office for Literacy and Outreach Services, includes sixteen objectives to accomplish this goal, from promoting food drives to eliminating fees for those who can’t afford to pay them, as well as creating low-income programs and services.

The “Poor People’s Policy,” as Policy #61 is called, is a statement of belief and a list of general tenets that all libraries are encouraged to adopt, similar to the Library Bill of Rights. However, as Sanford Berman described in a 2006 article in "Street Spirit," the Poor People’s Policy has not been accepted as widely as that older document. Berman’s observations on the tension between library ideals and reality are an insightful and passionate reflection of our profession’s unintentional hypocrisy. Library services, in general, serve the haves and exclude the have-nots, a circumstance he labels “classism.” Examples of classism include the small number of libraries carrying major serials on homeless issues; the fact that libraries in the lowest income areas are often open the fewest hours; and policies and laws banning “offensive body odor,” bathing, or sleeping.

How do librarians measure the impact of what they do? What have we learned about evaluation and assessing impact the homeless may gain through active participation at their local public library. Libraries, especially public libraries, can play a major role in initiating, partnering and/or seeking out new ways to support the homeless in their community. Libraries can
actively experiment with a variety of approaches and adjusting services and programs based on the feedback they receive. Libraries can take the lead within communities in building an environment of sensitivity and accommodation, to embraced the Poor People’s Policy and serve as model examples of a library-community agency partnership created for the benefit
of the homeless in their areas.

Topics for suggested papers include, but not limited to, the following:
•   Measuring the impact of homelessness on libraries: what models should we be using?
•   What should we be assessing? We all gather data on usage but what does it actually demonstrate?
.   Developing partnerships between the library and community agencies.
.   Papers on successful partnerships are most welcome.
•   How can libraries develop qualitative methods to measure impact and demonstrate value?
•   Why should libraries/city governments/management the poorest of their city's residents? How aware are we of the needs of the poor and the underserved and the issues that currently
   concern them?
•   We know what we do is valuable but how do we get it across? How do we communicate the findings of research and evaluation needs to be tailored to the audience needing the
   message.

It is anticipated that presentations will range between 20 and 25 minutes, with time for questions at the end of the session.

IFLA’s role in bringing marketing closer to libraries is of significance in many ways. Its formation of a new Section on
Management and Marketing in 1996 was an important step in this direction. This section has taken up many initiatives to bring marketing into the heart of libraries and librarians. It has organized many workshops/ conferences and made the marketing theme popular; brought out many useful publications putting marketing jargon in simple ways; promoted the marketing theme for inclusion in the course curricula; and worked for identifying best practices through instituting international award on marketing.

In 2006, the publication ‘Marketing Library and Information Services: International Perspectives’, edited by Dinesh K. Gupta, Christie Koontz, Angels Massisimo and Rejean Savard was brought out under the auspicious of IFLA. The publication was well received in the library community world over and was reviewed in many international journals
in English and other languages.

To continue the efforts, new publication ‘Marketing Library and Information Services: A Global Outlook’ is being planned and which will be published by IFLA’s official publisher De Gruyter Saur under the ‘Green-Back’ Publication Series, in the last quarter of 2012.

Library and information professionals (practitioners, researchers, faculty members, consultants, and others) who have put exemplary marketing efforts are encouraged to share their experiences by way of contributing papers for the volume broadly related with the following areas:
1. Changing marketing concepts
2. Marketing library and information services (MLIS) in different countries
3. Marketing library and information services in different kind of libraries
4. Education, training and research
5. Web based marketing

We would also request contributors to focus on recent developments in the field like: marketing of e-resources, digital library marketing, consortia based library marketing, marketing of e-products/ services, marketing through training/ information literacy, marketing library services to global community, and other such aspects which are contemporarily significant on the theme and which they would like to share with the library community worldwide.

Select papers will be put together in the volume to bring the global outlook of marketing library and information services.

We are currently planning the annual College andUniversity Business Libraries (CUBL) Section breakfast for the 2012 SLA AnnualConference in Chicago and are looking for three people interested in sharingtheir experiences or research with their colleagues.

This year's breakfast theme will be "OrganizationalAgility in Academic Business Libraries."

In what ways has your organization demonstrated itsagility over the past few years? Haveyou transformed your reference services, instruction, or your library'sphysical space? Has agility become partof your organization's culture? Is itembedded in your strategic planning? Howhas your organization integrated agility into its operations, and what lessonshave been learned along the way?

Share your best work in an ALA Annual Conference Poster Session

As another year comes to a close, and you reflect on allyou accomplished over the past twelve months, the ALA Poster Session Committeehopes that you will consider sharing your best work and ideas with the librarycommunity at the ALA Annual Conference.

Proposals for poster sessions to be presented at the 2012Annual Conference in Anaheim are now being accepted. An application form isavailable on the poster session website, at http://www.lib.jmu.edu/org/ala/howto.aspx,and the deadline for submission is January 6.

The poster session committee encourages submissions fromall types of libraries and on any topic relevant to librarianship. Submissionsmay include a description of an innovative library program; an analysis of asolution to a problem; a report of a research study; or any other presentationthat would benefit the larger library community.

Poster session participants place materials such aspictures, data, graphs, diagrams and narrative text on boards that are usually4 x 8 feet. During their assigned 1½ hour time periods, participants informallydiscuss their presentations with conference attendees. Titles/abstracts fromprevious years, and pictures of sample posters, are available at the postersession website: http://www.lib.jmu.edu/org/ala.

The deadline for submitting an application is January 6,2012. Applicants will be notified by Feb. 29, 2012, whether their submissionhas been accepted for presentation at the conference, prior to the ALA EarlyBird Registration deadline. The 2012 ALA Annual Poster Sessions will be heldJune 23 and 24, 2012 (the Saturday and Sunday of the conference) at the AnaheimConvention Center.

Theme: Continuity in the face of digital disasters: Disaster planning and recovery for digital libraries

While much emphasis has been placed by libraries on developing digital collections and services, there have been few studies of how to keep these digital collections and services functioning in the case of a disaster or some other disruption to normal library operations. Whether due to natural or man-made events, advance planning for disruptions to services and collections is critical in our increasingly digital age.

In response to this critical need, the Information Technology section is seeking proposals for papers on best practices and tools that relate to the facilitation, implementation, or planning for disaster recovery and business continuity of digital libraries.

Areas of interest for papers include, but need not be restricted to, the following:
•    Developing effective disaster recovery and organizational continuity models
•    Implementing effective disaster recovery and continuity strategies for digital repositories
•    Minimizing risk in developing and implementing digital libraries
•    Solutions for promoting collaborative services to enable digital library continuity
•    New organizational models to support an emphasis on library organizational continuity
•    Case studies and lessons learned from successful efforts in recovering from a disaster

Proposals for papers should be no more than one page in length. If selected, speakers will have 15 minutes to present their results and 5 minutes for a question and answer period during the conference session.

Proposals should include the following information:

-    Name, title, and institution of speaker(s)
-    Title of proposed presentation
-    Address and email address of speaker(s)
-    Brief biographical statement about each speaker including information about the qualifications of the speaker to address the proposed topic
-    One or two paragraph discussion of the main points of the paper including an outline of the takeaways a conference attendee will obtain by having the topic presented at the conference
-    Language of presentation
-    Contact information for response to the proposal

Proposals should be sent by 11 February, 2012 to Frank Cervone, secretary of the Information Technology Section at fcervone@purduecal.edu. The subject line of all submissions should be “IFLA ITS Proposal –“ followed by your last name. For example, “IFLA ITS Proposal – Cervone”

The contact person for each proposal will be informed by 10 March, 2012 whether their proposal has been accepted or not. Papers selected for inclusion in the program must be submitted in one the official languages of IFLA by 15 May, 2012.

Please note:
-    The committee is looking for papers that present real-world solutions. Papers that focus on solutions that are usable in multiple library contexts will receive higher consideration for inclusion in the conference program. Papers that are strictly theoretical or inapplicable to other environmental contexts are less likely to be accepted for inclusion in the program.
-    Every paper accepted must be presented in person by one of the authors at the WLIC in Helsinki.
-    Authors are required to permit non-exclusive publication of papers chosen for this session on the IFLA website and digital library. Papers that are accepted but not presented in person at the conference will not be made available on the official conference website nor will they be considered for nomination as a best paper of the conference.
-    Authors of papers not chosen for the conference may be invited to submit their paper for publication in the IFLA IT section journal.
-    All speaker expenses, including registration for the conference, travel, accommodation, etc., are the responsibility of the authors/presenters. No financial support can be provided by IFLA.
-    A special invitation can be issued to authors/presenters to facilitate attendance if required.

CFP: IFLA Cataloguing Section - Session Theme: Inspired moments in cataloguing!

The IFLA Cataloguing Section (IFLA CATS) invites proposals for papers to be presented at the World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) in Helsinki, Finland, August 11-17 2012.

In the 2012 open session the Cataloguing Committee wants to examine how well our rules and standards support an information infrastructure that fits user needs.
Could they even inspire new ways of using the data?

Proposals from all kind of users - from end users to professionals and researchers in cataloguing, cognitive science, persuasive technology, user behavior, interface design etc.- are welcome

Areas of interest include:
Do cataloguing rules support user needs?
Integration of metadata from different sources (avoiding silos) OPAC integration with other discovery tools User centered design Learning from search engines e.g. relevance ranking, spell check,sorting, faceting, stemming ...
User studies
User behavior vs FRBR user tasks

Four successful proposals on the topic will be identified.

Send a detailed abstract (1 page or at least 300 words) of the proposed paper (must not have been published elsewhere) and relevant biographical information of author(s)/presenter(s) by 31 January 2012 via email to:

The abstracts will be reviewed by members of the Cataloguing Section's Standing Committee. Successful proposals will be identified by 1 March 2012.

Full papers will be due by 1 May 2012 to allow time for review of papers and preparation of translations; papers should be no longer than 20 pages. 15-20 minutes will be allowed for a summary delivery of the paper during the Cataloguing Section's programme.

Please note that the expenses of attending the Helsinki conference will be the responsibility of the author(s)/presenter(s) of accepted papers.
